Fuel Saving Mods for 4x4 1.8t ?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just bought a 2002 green octavia 1.8t 4x4 estate last month for the family part exchanging my fabia vrs got just under 43000 miles on the clock.

Just wondered what modifications are best for saving fuel costs with prices rocketing an all.

Take out the junk in the boot, roof rack etc to save a bit of weight.

Keep the windows up where possible to lower drag.

Keep it well serviced and running nicely.

Drive with a light right foot.

Sorry, not alot you can do other than the obvious things.

Ensure you have the correct tyre pressures. Ensure you read the road of you, to avoid unnecessary heavy last minute breaking / and no racing people when you pull away from the traffic lights, etc

make sure you plan well ahead and come off the gas early so ensuring you use the fuel cut off function. The 9999 on the instanataintious MPG gauge is what you want as the engine is effectively off until you hit about ~1200 rpm when the fueling comes back on. It takes practice but my jaunt to work regualy get 38mpg:thumbup:, Call me an old lady if you will but i cant be bothered any more racing it on the way to and from work besides traffice stops me going much above 60 so that helps aswell. Trips of 70+ sees MPG down to ~30.

If your roads are quiet enough to get the benefit of it, cruise control might help.

If not, try accelerating up to speed, then seeing how far you can lift off before the car actually starts slowing down; the results might surprise you.

Most of my journeys into work 10/11miles get about 27mpg. To be honest if I worried about fuel economy I'd sell it. I've never managed more than 38 since the remap, and only about 40 before it. Worst/best ever 17mpg. If worried change your car because they just aren't economical. A mates got a crappy old Carina 1.8 or 2.0 not sure which and gets averages over 40

Cheers for replies:)

I could not bring myself to sell it the car has already grown on me I do like the power that the car gives so could not change. I suppose the only thing that I could do is remap the car to get that bit extra fuel ecomony.

My journeys are usually in the twistys of north wales so continuously swapping between brake and accelerator (not in a boy racer style I should add).

Ah well, learn to carry the speed, and maybe have some suspension mods done then.

If the car is set for variable service intervals, like mine is, it will be using LongLife oil which should save 3% on fuel consumption.

I like your style. And it will make a difference, only I not sure it will be the one your thinking of:)

Light foot! reading roads and leaving a bit earlier to miss any traffic ;)

Apparently (computer says) I am averaging 40.3 mpg since fill up - 360miles on and I am good for another 100 so I am told.

Not bad for a VRS ;)

Yeah just hoping I don't need to use the accelorater as much:). I have noticed the the pick up is a lot better.

mym 4x4 gets nothing like 38mpg for some reason!

the most i ever got(and remembered) was about 32mpg and that was a very long trip(edinburgh to oxford) but i was doing 90kph most of the way and kept booting it :D the extra 120bhp over standard might have something to do with it also

Economy remaps are catching on apparently....

Chipping away at high fuel costs - Times Online

top idea that, spend £300 to save upto £11 per fill up!!

excellent means that without increased insurance costs it'll only take you 28 refills(or about 25k of steady driving) to break even then its all glory baby!!

Yeah and to add to all that you get bit more grunt.;)

Begs the question why didn't they make the car like that in the first place...:(

My 4X4 has averaged 31.96 mpg over 25425 miles. Prior to remapping, it averaged 31.27 mpg over 5338 miles. I think the slight improvement in mpg since remapping is down to the engine loosening up.

I presume you mean 38mpg? In which case does it only run on 2 cylinders or do you only drive down hill?;) Thats about as good as mine ever gets

for marketing reasons, the 1.8T running exactly the same spec came in a few different power levels including but not only 150, 160, 170, 180, 190 etc and its all for marketing reasons as they price and spec a car to fit a certain market and certainly don't go all out on any car to make it the very best it could.., well amybe very very rare cars might but then are would be road going race cars :)

this is why you can fit a new exhaust manifold, intake, exhaust and remap a focus RS and get nearly 300bhp on the standard engine/gearbox/turbo.

you could look at doing a SAFED course

Well I'm chuffed just done a 300 mile jaunt ( Germany ) 100mph average :) and got 30mpg. Normally I average 32.5mpg driving like a Granny, so my question is why bother ?

Just finished tank of fuel in VRS.. 440 odd miles from fill up on super

Works out to 38.9 mpg which isn't bad...however onboard puter stated 40.4 ;)

Caining it this fill up to see if the boring driving is worth it.
