New Tyres - Peoples Thoughts

Featured Replies

Looking to get a pair of front tyres for the Fabia, having done a search I have come up with a few tyres but only seen people fitting them after recommendations but now looking for your veiws after running them for a while.... (if that makes sense?)

The Tyres I have seen / heard to be decent are;

Nexen 3000 (£53 each)

Kuhmo KU31 (£69 each)

Falken Ziex ZE-912 (£61 each) - not seen these but they fall into the price bracket!

Ideally I don't want to be spending much more than £60 per tyre, I want an improvement over my Nankang (sp?) ditch finders which although last a long time have no grip in the wet.

Just wanting some thoughts on the above tyres if they are any good, or some reccommendations for alternatives around the same cost, I need to get some 185 55 14's for my GF's car also so if we get them all together we maybe able to negotiate a good deal.

Thanks

Tom

They are all budget tyres and as such may well be the same as the nankangs with regard to performance.

If you must go with one of these, then try the kuhmos.

I have the Kumhos fitted to the front of mine, they came with it - but I have to say they are good tyres.

Also in the lastest Which? report there was a test on tyres and the Ku31's came out on top of all the more expensive brands for wet weather braking, and a good overall score.

Go for those!

Out of that list, I'd go for the Kumhos, but then I've always been of the opinion that a. scrimping on tyres is a mug's game and b. just because Which? know what constitutes a good ironing board, they aren't the be-all and end-all of product testing...

I have just had a ring round and was recommended some Yokohama S306's @ £63.50 each, I know Yokohama make some decent tyres but has anyone used these?

I know the more I talk about this the closer I am going to get to spending 70-80 on each tyre.....

I have had Eagle F1's on it in the past which were great but only lasted 10k on the front.

Parada Spec 2's are nice and grippy. no idea on how long they're going to last though

What are you doing with them??? I had a set of F1's on my VRS that did 17k and are now on my Roomster with 3-4mm left having done a further 4k. The only bad thing about them is they are lethal in the snow and you don't have to worry about that too often

Have a search on tyre choice' date=' there are more threads on it than a Christmas jumper.

Also try Tyres at mytyres.co.uk: car tyres, 4x4 tyres and van tyres at low prices

Well I think my tracking may have been slightly to blame and I was not having alot of luck with tyres - lots of punctures etc which is why I started buying cheap tyres.... It almost got to a point where when I called the tyre fitters they recongnised me over the phone! I was in there on a regular basis - almost monthly for a new tyre!!! I haven't had the car 2 years yet and I have been through around 10 tyres, changed the fronts 3times and the rears once, plus had to replace a couple due to punctures, and some puncture repairs...... I know I do alot of miles but it still alot?!?

I haven't changed tyres now for (I reckon) 8-10months so most of my tyres were changed in the first year which makes those numbers even worse!

I've got Falken 912's on the back of my car at the min. Not bad for the money, good grip in the wet but only ok grip in the dry (both referring to driving hard). For average driving they would be more than adaquate - I'm up to 3k on them now and they've been fine on the little cornish roads and quite low road noise when on the motorway. Can't go wrong for the moiney! (They're about £50 from Camskill)

Go for the most expensive tyres you can afford!!!

Cheap/budget tyres will have had corners cut to make them cheaper to produce.....

A budget Sport tyre after 10k miles (approx 1year on the car).....

I've also had Kumho's do something very similar. The reinforcing braid inside the tread stops short of the shoulder inside the tyre. Due to the cyclic loading of any specific point of the tyre, during normal use the braiding wears away at the rubber from the inside out and then your tyre splits!!!!!!!!

I had this happened on my old car, and a friend has had it happen recently on his E30 335i (not a typo, an engine conversion!!!)

I now have Pzero Nero's on the front of mine and they're excellent! I will NEVER use budget tyres again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I have opted for the Yokohamas on mine and I have also decided to replace the rears (more budgets) with the same, seen some good reveiws around the net (mainly on alfa's) so will see how they go.

Worked out @ £62 per corner, compared to the cheapest internet price of around £75.... Pretty happy with that providing there as good as people say.....

I am getting Nexen N3000 next time. I have these in 19" on my Vectra and they are a good tyre, no probs so far and many good reviews on them.

What about Ebay... Has anyone bought tyres from there and had them fitted locally? It would seem the cheapest route to getting quality boots on your motor.

I have the Falken's all round on mine - they are pants, in the dry pushing hard they let go and in the wet they can be almost undrivable even at slow speeds - I am getting rid of them as soon as I can afford it.

My dad just got some Nankangs...! he doesn't drive like his hair is on fire any more so doesn't worry too much. He said if they're crap he'll get some Eagles or something.

Personally, I never buy budget tyres and always buy a premium brand. It might not be a cheap way of doing it but your tyres are the last link between you and the road.

Current Bridgestones are on 13k, about 4mm left. Not sure what to get next, will price up some Eagle F1s or Toyos - never had Toyos before but they get great write ups.

So called 'premium' brands have also been known to split/blowout/bulge/wear etc etc. I know, I have had it happen over the years for no real good reason. As long as you dont go and buy remoulds/worn or really cheap tyres they are all much of a muchness. I just got 2 x Nexen N3000's for mine and so far they have performed brilliantly, as good as the best tyres I have ever used in fact. The reason I got Nexen's?......some of the reviews about them are fantastic, even beating some 'premium' brands.

It aint always the case that the more you spend the better you get.

I just had some Sumo Firenza ST-08 fitted onto the front locally for £49.95 a tyre.

First impressions are very good. They ride well, a little noiser than the T1R and seem to grip fine, but havnt pushed them yet as they are not bedded in.

The cheapest way is to get the Yellow Pages out when you;ve decided what tyre you want, and ring everyone local to get a price on it. I got a Pirelli Pzero Nero for £75 fitted at my local little tyre shop. Kwikfit's price was £130.

^ definitely. ring around all local indepents. thats what I did.
