Owners of new Fabia vRS's: Check your oil

Featured Replies

I have been checking mine every 1k miles or so, but maybe hadnt checked it for around the last 1.5 or 2k miles, I'm on 5.5k miles now. I checked it just before I went on my little drive today, and found that the oil was just below the minimum mark as recommended by the manual, which probably means if I hadnt checked it, it would have been bye bye engine. Hopefully there has not been any damage (the car feels fine), but the warning light did not come on, so just a friendly warning, better safe than sorry.

I would think the warning light would come on before the oil level is dangerously low which I guess is lower than the "low" mark on the dip stick.

But yes, I agree. Checked mine around the 6000 mile mark and was amazed to see it needed more than a litre of the stuff to get back close to the upper limit mark

Many modern engines use so little oil that it is very easy to neglect to check the oil level as often as one should. I always check the garage floor as I reverse out to see if there are any signs of oil or coolant loss.

PD engines are quite common to use a little oil in the first 20,000 miles or so. Your warranty on the engine is invalid if its run out of oil. Only common sense to check it at least once a week, same as your tyre pressures.

check mine on the octy every time i open the bonnet (which is every time i wash the car...)

talking of tyre pressures, whats the best pressure to be putting into the 205/40 r17 tyres on the vRS ??

went to the garage yesterday cause i thought they looked a little low but there was 30psi in each fron tyre... i popped an extra 2 psi in just to be safe...

My Engine needed topping up at about 5k... its not used ANY since

I needed to top my oil up a week before Brunters. Can't remember how many miles it was.

Topped mine up a 4.5k, half a litre did the trick. BTW you will get a warning sound accompanied by the oil warning light if it's to low. Happened on my previous car, first top up was at 12k -oooops, not good.

So don't worry to much the car will inform you if you're scrapping the bottom of the barrell.

However, there's no substitute for checking reguarly.

I got mine topped up when Col first mentioned how low his was. I haven't had to touch it since.

I needed some at 1K but it hasn't gone down noticably since then as I check it every time the car is cleaned.

My Octy vrs has'nt needed any oil in about 15k miles. Not bad going at all. The only oil I've put into it was during the last servicing.

Tyres should be 205/50 R 17. 31lbs (2.1 Bar) front and 32lbs (2.2 Bar) rear. Look inside the filler cap.

Hi. I also suffered great problems with the oil level. I owe a fabia 1,4 litre, 16V, 101HP. In a period of about 7000 Km the engine needed 2 litres of oil. This is very much. When I bought the car my dealer said that it is normal to add some oil to the engine because it is a 16-valve car. I don't think it is normal. I don't think I need to fill my car's engine with oil more often than filling it with gas !!!!!

mine went a bit to low luckily caught it in time was watching most weeks

also at least after the warning light and sound there will also be a warning Grating and grinding from the engine

Blimey. Im glad ive found this forum. I collecting my Fabia VRs a few weeks ago and in the first 10 days of owning it i shoved over 1500 miles on the clock (trip to Knockhill for the touring cars). I think ill be checking my oil levels this weekend!

yeah i checked mine today, and after 6.5k its about half way down. was just below the max mark.

had to put about 1.5 litres into the wifes vRS in the first 10000 miles spread over 2 - 3 top ups,

car has just been serviced and the local dealer appears to have over filled it as the level is about 3-4 mm above the max on the dipstick

To quote from the Owner's Manual (sic):

The oil level must on no account be higher than the range "c". Otherwise, oil may be drawn into the combustion chamber and passed through the exhaust system to atmosphere. This can have a detrimental effect on combustion and on the opetating life of the catalytic converter.

(c refers to the top oil level mark on the dipstick - see picture in Manual)

I would ask the dealer to drain some oil off so that the level is correct.

Sorry to kick the thread up again but what oil are you topping up with?

It's just that I'm expecting my Fab vRS in a couple of weeks and just want to make sure I'm doing right... :o

Ta! ;)

Any spec VW 501 00 oil. Your dealer should have VAG-branded oil to that spec; Millers XFE-PD is suitable; and Fuchs do a fully synthetic oil to that spec. The latter can be ordered from oilman.

Cheers Denis... ;)

get my vRS this week... do they have variable servicing like VW's? If so, is it special oil?

Variable servicing - no for Fabia vRS. Special oil - yes, but not the same as PD-engine cars on variable servicing. See the Articles section for info on what oils meet spec VW 505 01.

Rigt guys , here comes the really silly question, is there any particular oil you would reccommend (other than that in the manual) ? one that is readily available that is.

See my post above. One of the fully synthetic oils on the list in the Article should be better than a semi-synthetic one but all meet the correct spec.

Spent Saturday wandering around Halfords looking for 5W40 branded stuff, could only find Halfords own. So opted for 0W40 Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic for TurboDiesels - should be the same as a 5W40 only it's good down to -45C! Says it conforms to 501-00 - did see mention of it needing to pass 501-01, anyone know what the difference between the two is?

And after 7.5k it was about half way down the mark. *slaps own wrist for not checking it earlier*
