Any camera people got any thoughts on this?

In case the link doesn't work, it's a Sony DSCT1 camera.

I like:

  • Size (absolutely minute)
  • Resolution (5MP)
  • Switch-on time (around 1 sec)
  • Recovery time between shots (pretty damn good)
  • 3x optical zoom, despite how thin it is

I don't like:

  • Sony's silly memory stick format
  • That's about it :D

I don't know about:

  • Picture quality
  • Anything not mentioned elsewhere

I can't see any alternatives with the same combination of size / form factor and resolution.

Any thoughts anyone?

Cheers,

urrg... i presume that it takes the picture sideways or something

im not convinced.:o

Personally I like Fuji digital cameras especially the finepix S7000 Link here . Not too sure about the Sony kit but I doubt I would pay that much for that type of digital camera.

Simon,

To get comparisons between just about every digital camera ever made, look at the Imaging Resource website.

In general, don't be dazzled by large amounts of digital zoom: it's useless. If you want to get long-range shots you'll need a camera you can hold steady and a long optical zoom.

I went for a Minolta Z1 (now replaced by the Z2) which does everthing I want it to, but is bigger than the Sony you are looking at.

Bigger than the compact one you are looking at but you can't have everything.

Minolta's Xg / Xt series use a periscope ( folded path optics). It gives superb quality 'snap-shot' size photos + i can keep it in my pocket.

There are some new models due Sept/Oct (as always) so if you can wait you get the Sony cheaper or pay the same for a higher spec.

If you haven't had a v.small digi camera before make sure you try it as a friends dad tried one but couldn't get a comfortable grip due to large brickies hands !

I'd compare memory stick prices before you buy it.

Might be cheaper to go for something CF based.

Ive got a Canon Digital Ixus v3. quite a small camera but with very decent pic quality.. its a couple of yrs old now so new ones will be even better

casio rv51, quick turn on speed, 5mp true, just quick in general and v.good picture quality, highest res is about 2560x1920 or summat silly like that.

also on sale in pc world so only costs

There's a review on Steve's Digicams here (including sample pictures)

Only downer is the memory stick - Crucial do 128mb for

I've got an Olympus C740 Ultra Zoom and absolutely love it. Apart from my Canon EOS 500N, it is the best camera I've ever owned.

Thanks for all the comments guys.

Yes, I'm after a compact camera. It's to be a replacement for my 2-year-old Pentax Optio 430.

@bryand, wow - great site. Thanks, have bookmarked.

@Mivec, I have small hands ;)

@Geoff, Memory stick prices: a 256mb "duo" card will set me back

Simon, I'll pm you a price tomorrow for the Sony one if you're still interested. It may be cheap, it may not. Sony prices tend to fluctuate quite a lot at the mo... :o
