Disabling my Octy - for the holidays...

Featured Replies

OK, so i better not say whereabouts i live in the country - but i'm off on holiday for 10 days, on a banger rally (www.teamsmokeybandit.co.uk) and the Octavia will be parked on my drive while i'm away. I live around the corner from a very chavvy council estate.

However, i've had to switch my insurance to the Corsa for the trip, so i need to disable it from being stolen.

Having the wheels off is a bit to obvious and is inviting the CHAV's to have a play/ try and knock it off the axles stands. Don't wanna disconnect the battery as that's to easy to hook back up if they pop the bonnet.

So, what can i take off and lock in the house to stop it being easily nicked. If they are desperate enough to tow it, and the neighbours don't notice, then they are welcome to it i guess!

I'd leave it a family member or mates house to keep an eye over it personally.

That's a problem, as the other car is at the Mrs' mum's house, as it's my pride and joy and needs to be watched over....

I wouldnt have anything less than have someone watch over it.

could do a couple of things like

makign sure stearing wheel lock is on and you have something on the wheel.

leaving it in a forward gear

parking another car behind it

could even remove a spark plug or two

oh and don't forget to take the keys with you

Take the ECU off, not sure where it is on the Octy 1, but you could leave that at someone elses house.

Take the battery out and lock it in the house?

Stick the Corsa badges on the octy to confuse the chavs?

Oh and your profile says where you live by the way...

Leave the keys with a trusted mate. That will stop anyone getting it away short of a low loader, and from what you've said that's the best you're going to do.

Norwich Union do short term insurance policies fors days/weeks.

I know it'll cost a few notes but it would be peice of mind. Keep the Octy insured and use NU for the other car?

Insurance for keeping it on the drive should be cheap - remember you only need theft, fire, vandalism cover cos you won't be driving it.

Seems I was beaten to it! ;)

One thing i used to do on previous cars was give the inertia switch a whack with something hard (not sure if the airbag is linked into that on the octy though), so unless there educated Chavs they'll never start it:D

Just take the key/s with you or leave them with a relative.....without the keys the car will not start - modern cars cannot be hotwired :thumbup:!!

Oops - if anybody wants some spare bits for an Octy, looks like i'll be arranging for somewhere to house the poor girl now!

I know it's heresy to say this on here, but i'm not sure i'd be that fussed if she got nicked, she's a £2k workhorse to me....

I'll certainly be taking the keys (and spares) with all documents to the Mrs' house with the other car.

Thanks for the suggestion about spark plugs... but it's a TDI, can anything similar be done with glow plugs or leads that provide them current?

I was serious about the keys; the reason being that all Octys have transponder immobilisers, so with no keys they're going nowhere unless pushed or towed.

Yep - point noted and that's the course i plan to take. Keys will be 20 miles away from car when i'm away!

Easy .....it's under the scuttle panel with 2 clips holding it in place.

Park it up, take the keys with you, leave the front wheels on full lock - not straight ahead and engage the steering lock (cant be easily winched that way). You could remove the power supply realy to the ECU, grey one in a plastic holder under the bonnet (there are 2 relays in the holder) - less trouble than taking the ECU out with the same result.

Easier way just pop all the fuses out but not the alarm/ immoboliser one ?

Could park it right up close against a wall, with a metal security post behind it.

You can't steal it, unless you have the key.

Take the keys with you, or well hide them. Car crime now is breaking in and stealing the key.

If you want to disable it, disconnect the crank sensor. Or if you want to be more sure, remove all 4 coil packs and take them with you on holiday. Put the cover back on, it will crank but won't go....

take off coil packs.

wheel clamp, steering wheel clamp, put in a very low fuse for the ignition so when its turned it will just pop it immediately and make sure there is very little fuel left in the tank in case they decide after all that they will drain the tank.
