MOT Fail CO2 emissions

Featured Replies

Have people with the similar Milltek 100cel cat had the same problems as Blueflame users?

Mine had its MOT this morning and went through OK with a Milltek 100cel cat.

IMHO the car should be taken for emissions test at a second station to confirm or otherwise the current situation, otherwise the issue of whether the cat is faulty or not is just speculation.

I thought the milltek was a 200 cell

Got it booked in for tuesday at a different garage for another emissions test and to have a look at the exhaust

Ain't they all have to have their machines calibrated, and a cert issued that it's true and correct?

It is in my game anyway!

yes they "should" indeed be.. but like the MOT itself, that's ultimately only as good as the day it's done. It's also subject to variations in the conditions that the test is conducted, eg. regarding the time allowed at elevated idle to get the Cat to light off.

If it were me, I'd want a second opinion before condemning the Cat.

They do the 100 and 200 cell cat.

Hope things get sorted for you on Tues mate.

Who is the best person to speak to at blueflame is it Nigel? The guy I spoke to last time was a bit of a numpty and couldn't be bothered with me.

Had it tested again at another MOT testing station and suprise suprise it failed. Was a lot closer this time it actually just passed the idle test at 0.49 but it failed on the fast idle test at 0.48. Think it is time to sort the cat out.

Went to blueflame to get the cat sorted today got it MOT'd on the way home and it went straight through! Really happyas it has been a right pain in the backside. Thanks to everybody for their advice:thumbup:

The air filter won't affect it. That's the days of carbs. If it was getting slightly less air, it's the job of the MAF to tell the ECU, which does a cross check to ensure the MAF isn't talking rubbish, and will then modify the pulse to the injectors to ensure the same mix is held. And of course it will just open the throttle a touch more to get the required amount of air in.

I agree that a good blast, getting it nice and hot, followed by pulling into the station and holding at 3k rpm while he gets the meter ready and testing it as soon as you drop it to idle is the way to go.

Ultimately you are likely to have an insuffient cat on it however, which is one of the reasons it wasn't fitted at the factory.

Greg.

What's the air filter like?, have you considered trying a fuel system cleaner?

Also you are getting your CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) and CO (Carbon Monoxide) confused. CO2 for VED banding and CO for emissions.

Went to blueflame to get the cat sorted today.

Did they fit a new cat?

I think you were getting a new cat welded weren't you? Whats the emissions figures like now?

  • Author

Yes they welded on a 200 cell cat. Emissions are now 0.01 at idle and 0.18 at fast idle so they are easily under the limits. Was running at 0.9 at fast idle before!

This CO2 stuff is a modern day fad. CO2 is produced in massive quantities by mother nature - we even breath out the stuff ourselves.

Yes they welded on a 200 cell cat.

Was the '200' cat your choice or was it theirs?

Its the only one they do now aparently as they had been having some trouble with people complaining about engine management lights and there was another guy on here who couldn't get his 100 cell through an MOT so they had to change it.

Jeez that sounds worrying :thumbdwn:

Have you noticed any loss of performance or exhaust note change with the 200?

Anything ?????

Cat or no cat! bet you need a mortgage for a 200/100 cel 'sports' cat!! just do away with it alltogether and take it to a garage that dunt care:thumbup:!! The garage I use just run another car on the machine for the emmisions. There must be a sympathetic garage near everyone! just avoid main dealers and kwick-fit !!

Agree 100% with your there Rich.

It's just that some people won't 'bend' the rules, that includes garages & some Briskoda peeps!

mainly depends on how bothered the garage is about losing their MOT license...

If you can find a "friendly" one then crack on! :D

Unfortunately the extra 70BHP you can get with bolt on bits and a remap is all about bypassing or dissabling the emmisions systems built into the car, therefore you cant tune it to the max (with standard turbo & rods & inj) and expect it to pass emmisions or expect the EML not to come on as these are systems designed to tell you that your emmision control systems aren't working!

Just gop to your local garage and tell them its got a full system and might not pass the emmisions they will tell you iff its a problem before you take it for the test, just find one that ok with it. Don't turn up with a suit on they will think your from the ministry!!

Wayne ,

I haven't noticed any difference at all in performance or exhaust note change at all.
