Mozilla Firefox

Does anyone here use Firefox as their browser?

I installed it a couple of days ago (not that I was bored, or anything ...), and I'm still trying to work out whether it's worth the effort or not. It takes a fair bit of setting up, and what with installing all the 'extensions' to get it to do what you want, it all seems a bit geeky (for the sake of it).

And it's support of Java seems a bit flakey, too.

Any opinons? Is there any compelling reason, other than the supposed security benefits, of using Firefox as opposed to IE * ?

I'll keep using it, 'til I get used to it, but thanks to its dodgy JavaScript support, I'll have to keep using IE alongside.

( * apart from being able to gloat about not using Microsoft products, of course ;))

I use it and some things miff me, but it's my first choice now...the odd site does not work, but hey ho.

ave to say not really got messy with the plugin's and not noticed java moaning, least not with about 5 different J2EE's on my machine, I think it's spoilt for choice.

I love the tabbed browsing....that alone saves me hours.

Considering switching over myself on lap top as ****ed off with IE.

I'm currently using Firefox on both my home/work PC. Can't say I've had any problems with it. Just the odd site doesn't work. All the Java stuff seems alright.

Switched to firefox a few weeks back, and have only used IE a few times to look at sites specifically aimed at that browser (odeon.co.uk for example).

Compelling reason to use it? Tabbed browsing (with the extension to catch new windows opening and convert them to a new tab), Opening a whole category of bookmarks into individual tags... and the fact that firefox sticks to web standards a lot better than IE...

The thing l love about Firefox is a element of the tabbed browsing..

middle click to open link in new tab, then loads in background... ideal when browsing /. and the like :)

The tabbed browsing certainly seems to be the biggest hit ... that was the hook that my new sidekick here used, to get me to install it in the first place!

Oddly, the site that caused me grief this morning, Eurotunnel.com's booking site, now works ! I'll stick with it, because it certainly seems to be loved by those that use it.

Which piece of open-sourced cleverness should I try next I wonder :rubchin:?

(Don't anyone DARE suggest Linux  ... been there, and had the sleepless nights to prove it)

Firefox user here too .

The National Lottery web site whinges about needing IE or Netscape, and there are a few drawing problems on some sites, but generally it seems very reliable and somewhat faster (or is that just me?) than IE.

So, IE has to stay because of some sites, but Firefox is now my default.

I thought it was quicker, but then I also thought that it was just me :D

It's quicker sometimes, but also more memory hungry, and just downright fails to open many sites. I've stopped using it. Having to keep switching between two browsers just doesn't compensate for the tabbed browsing (which is great, btw  ). Maybe it'll get better. I'll try again in a year or so.

I just noticed something odd ... if I hover the mouse pointer over the thread titles on here, to get the 'preview' of the first couple of lines of the post, which works fine in IE, in Firefox the carraige returns show up as little black squares . Different.

Using it here, but there are a few dodgy things about it.

When I click back, quite often I end up at the top of the page, even if I did not start there in the first place. Irritating.

For some reason, flash applets have decided to make me click a play button to get them to display. Good in some instances, but when a whole site is done in it, then thats not good. I prefer the flash toggle button like in Avant.

It does seem to be pretty slow - if you have a few extensions installed, open the extensions dialogue box and watch how slow it gets, even on 2 GHz PC's.

Hopefully they will fix some of these annoyances for v1.0

I think I saw a thingy on a web-forum yesterday that said that this was a "feature"

geeks are wierd ...

I currently use both. Firefox and IE at work, IE only here on the missus' laptop (she'd hate me to install something confusing like that) and Firefox and IE on my machine. FF is quite nice but still annoys sometimes but they'll iron those little things out in time.

I can see me switching over to it pemanently in the near future...

I installed Firefox but took it off again because I had trouble with my IE Favorites. Firefox is supposed to import them with no problem but when I clicked on the original IE Favorites I got an error message saying that Windows couldn't find the reference; this message then disappeared and the favorite loaded! I'm sure there's a way round this but I just couldn't be bothered. 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it'. IE6 has always worked OK for me but make sure you keep installing the patches.

I have it installed here, but it has trouble displaying some sites so I also still use IE. Speed is simillar, the downloader takes some getting used to.

the downloader takes some getting used to.

Hmm. Indeed. "Save it there. No, there. FFS, THERE!!!!!" - where's the pigging file gone? - oh, look, it's on the desktop"

Don't get me started ....

What about the little window that pops up saying "all files have been downloaded" - the "all files" message is hyperlinked, but clicking on it achieves precisely f*&! all !!! aarrghhhhh!! :D

Shortcut on quick launch to folder ;)

But yes mucho annoying....as is pop up blocker when your trying to debug a site and forget it's there..oh well I had fun.

Have you tried the Web Developer extension, Colin..........?

  • 3 weeks later...

I not only use Firefox, but also OpenOffice.org, because they're cross-platform, so when I migrate away from Windows, I don't have to re-learn any of the applications I use every day. I switched to FireFox around version 0.7, now at 0.9.2 it's one hell of a good browser. No more ActiveX Spyware/Troyans/Viruses (Virrii?) hijacking my PC...

Actually, the latest version of Firefox seems very stable - only a few sites that need IE now...

I installed it yesterday... working ok. import ok

Worst thing is sites that check your browser version to see if it's up to displaying the site - more often than not the designer will have checked for IE and Netscape only, so you'll automatically be denied access. Not even a link to proceed "at your own risk"

Try powergen.co.uk - the site thinks you have Netscape 0.8 or something! :(
