Selling car but need to swap over cherished plate

Featured Replies

Right im swapping my Fabia for another  and i have a private plate on the car, how do i get it off?

Dont fancy hanging around for weeks and weeks

Can i sell car with plate on then claim back later?

how do i get it off?

Easy just undo the 2 screws and it will come off

Try this ;)

Personalised Number Plates

I've heard stories of people selling cars with a private plate and consequently the buyer asking the seller for money for the plate. Easier to transfer now before sale if you value the plate and want to keep it.

Once you fill in the new owner's details on the V5, the plate is effectively his.

How long does it take to stick it on retention??

Dont fancy waiting weeks? the lad im swapping also has a private plate

nope its not,my plate belongs to my wife, and she can rip it off and take it back any time she wants, and leaveme with an unregistered nightmare.

Not sure if that was tongue in check, but my understanding is the plate belongs to the car. I was told this by somebody at the local dvla office when I tried to put a plate on retention after I had filled in the new owner's details on the V5 of a car i was selling. I was told that the retention certificate would bear the new owner's details and whilst I could put my name as the nominee, they could change that.

In the end I ripped up the v5, applied for a new one, put the reg on retension, go a new v5 with non private reg and then filled in the new owner's deatils on that.

Only took about a month!!

A month! bummer!

Cant you stick it on retention then sell it with the new owner part of the v5?

the plate is in her name,if the car is sold with the plate then the new keeper must pay for the transfer, and she must agree and sign it over, shes had all this before and its a common misconception, the plate belongs to a person, and not the car:thumbup:

You have to send off (or hand over) the V5 to either transfer or put the plate on retention, so unless the new seller trusts you, you have no v5 to hand over.

I have to confess the month thing was a while ago and complicated by the fact I had to get a duplicate v5 to put the plate on retention and then get a V5 with the new reg on, then send it off. So effectively I did 3 transactions.

The last time i just put a plate on retention, I pretty much got the new reg by return of post. I think it was more like a week when I got the v5. I was told by someone (I forget who) to use a smaller dvla office, as they tend to be less busy - ie I used Worester rather than Bristol - difficult to prove if it made any difference.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "the plate is in her name". What details who the plate belongs to?

The DVLA form V317 (Transferring a VRN) states at note B - "Am I eligible to participate in the scheme?" states:

Registration numbers are assigned to vehicles. An individual acquires entitlement to move a registration number through being the keeper (who may not necessarily be the owner) of the vehicle.Vehicles taking part in the scheme must be in existence and registered at DVLA. Vehicles must also be available for inspection, be of a type that requires an annual roadworthiness test and be currently licensed (but see note D).

The DVLA form V778/1 (Retention of a VRN) states at note B - "Who can apply to retain a registration?" states:

Registration numbers are assigned to vehicles. An individual acquires

entitlement to move a vehicle’s number through being the keeper (who

may not necessarily be the owner) of that vehicle. If you have newly

acquired a vehicle and it is not yet registered in your name you may

still be able to apply (see note E). Vehicles taking part in the scheme

must be in existence and registered at DVLA. Vehicles must also be

available for inspection, be of a type that requires an annual

roadworthiness test and be currently licensed (but see note E).

My understanding of those is that if the v5 is in my name, then i can transfer the plate. If it's not, then I need to get the v5 in my name (which I'd normally do by buying the car, although I understand the difference between the owner and keeper).

No axe to grind - just interested.

Eric is taking my car tomoro.....with the plate on it...he will register it in his name then im giving him the money to put it on retension and he will give the retension certificate to me.......

the end :D

How does it work when you have a cherished number, and trade your car in for a new one through a dealer?

If you can get to a DVLA office I'm pretty sure they can effect the transfer pretty quickly. Must Admit I have always got the stealer to do it a trade in time but last time I he had me plates on the new (second hand) car with in a couple of days of doing the deal

How does it work when you have a cherished number, and trade your car in for a new one through a dealer?

Stealer will do all this for you - he will want the £80 fee that is due to DVLA but should process the paperwork as part of the deal.

If you know and trust the other party, then this approach is fine. However, I think that they can still change their mind, pay the £25 and have the nominee changed (but I guess they'd have to get the certificate back off you - or apply for a replacement). Also, I think that the reminder that the retention was about to expire would go to the third party.

All technicalities I know.....

I think they work on the fact that along as they see the original V5, they know the car is yours to sell, then they transfer everything in one and the new plate ends up on the car you drove out.

I think you car effect the transfer in person at the dvla office - it's getting the v5 back that takes the time (and if you're selling privately, this could be an issue).

Bro-in-law did his, same day, at his local DVLA office there and then when he part-ex his car in to the dealers. Car went in am, his new motor had his plate on by T time (staff there were very slow he said).

Might be worth the trip to yours.

The number actually always belongs to DVLA - all you are buying is the entitlement to display it on your car. This is why if you abuse it (by mis spacing or altering it) they can reclaim it back off you.

It clearly states that if you sell the car to someone else before transferring the number, then title to the number goes to the new keeper of the car.

Trust me, I know...

Can anybody tell me exactly how you go about putting a cherished plate onto a car?

If you drive your car to the local DVLA office, park and go into the office with your V5, Retention Cert and Tax disc, they will do it straight away for you and issue you with a revised tax disc, and send the V5 off to Swansea for revision. That is how I understand it.

Do you then have a certain fixed period of time before you must display the new reg number on the car?

Or do you have to put the new plates on the car in the car park?

I am not 100% sure on this - anybody help?

Pretty sure thats exactly what you have to do. The change is instant.

At least thats what bro-in-law did.

When I got my plate the first time I allocated it to a car it was instant and I took all my documents to the DVLA office.

When I changed it when trading the car in at a dealer they dealt with it and not sure how long it took as they had to get stuff sorted with the car.

A few years later i sold the car to a fellow member from here and it took about a week and that was putting the plate on retention. I took all the documents into the local office and they said it could take upto 10 working days.

I guess depending how busy they are alters how long it may take, car sales have slowed so may be a little quicker.

Also for people who haven't done it before you only pay the £80 fee when removing it and putting it on retention and not when you put it on a new car.

If you keep it off a car for a long period of time there is a yearly fee.

I would have thought the easiest way in this case is to take both of the cars to the local VRO with all the relevant documents, and explain to the staff what you are doing, they can then effect the transfer between cars and the transfer of ownership.

You get a 'temporary log book' (certificate of number plate entitlement - I think its caled) that you can take to the plate maker in place of your V5C, or in this case just go back outside and swap the plates from one car to the other when the paperwork is all done.

Dont forget though, you'll need the reg for the old car, and unless on retention, can only be issued once the transfers been done.

I bought my reg. from DVLA web site. When paper work arrived in teh post I drove to te office, got all the paperwork done then drove 25 mile home and then changed the plates. I'm pretty sure you have a day or two to do this (5??)
