Damsel In Distress?!

Featured Replies

Hi guys new to the forum, just bought a fabia, classic in yellow <3 now i know i have a 3 month warranty but I need to get details on that yet as to where covers it... BUT

it sits there and chugs like a diesel does (its a petrol) and the cars vibrates. Someone said it could be mis firing? or might be something else and the engine ticks over quite loud?

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what it is to put my mind at rest until its sorted :)

It might help if you give some sepcifics about the engine type etc.

Hope you get things sorted

it's a classic 1.4i 68 bhp :)

1.4MPI?

My old 1.4mpi 2002/02 had a very lumpy idle but didn't notice it making the car shake

  • Author

yeah mpi thats the one

can't help you with the shaking, but I suspect our resident Master Tech will pop along for a diagnosis soon enough ;)

like sometimes it shakes i feel like it will stall but it's not like the revs drop really :S

i have that too. 2000 1.4 classic mpi. rattly engine which i assume is the chain because this engine has no tensioners. n mine also vibrates; only notice it when im sitting there idling.

can it be fixed i want it to be quieter lol

Its sounds more like a miss fire that a loose/worn timing chain.

How many miles has it done ? and what kind of servicing.

  • Author

44k just hit.. well.. APPARANTLY it's just had a service but yet it's got no oil in it :S:S

No oil isnt good!!

Take that up with the people woh 'serviced' it, sounds like they didnt check the chain for ware either.

If the timing chain is warn, it will miss fire, which would make the revs go funny and shake a little bacause the ecu is trying to pick the revs back up and cand do it very well 'cos of the timing problem.

I dont think the timing chain would be a warrenty issue, unless you can say that it wasnt serviced properly, and you can tell that from the oil.

Also, see if the oil filter is dirty, if it is, it may not have been changed.

HTH.

Nothing quite like helping a Damsel,

Dave

the no oil well was checked the other day wos just on the bottom line.. so will buy some tomorrow. what type will I need. I'm a girl have no idea.

all the other services were bt Skoda this one wasn't was done by the people that were in the same estate as to where I got it.

So what do I need to do? Say 'Oi, this isn't right?'

Did the seller state that it had just been serviced? Have you noticed an oil leak? Have a little look underneath for obvious signs of leakage.

If you have a 3 month warranty on it and it is not running ok then I would ring the bloke and take it back to be put right.

Agree that engine idling might not be that quiet in the MPI but should not be like that.

Hey,

Why don't you say what area you are.

I am sure there is a gallant technical samaritan in your vicinity who would gladly give your car the 'once over' and give you sufficient ammo to fire at the 'so called' car dealer that sold you the car.

I hate to hear of non tech people being 'given the run around' or being 'ripped off' by 'couldn't give a damn' sales people.

So come on guys, if this damsel is in your area, please make contact and advise her, pronto.

You'll want 10w40 Semi-synthetic oil

My local auto shop sells it to me at £11 for 5L

If you have a 3 month warranty take the car back, say its running rough and that the oil level seems low and see what they say.

Otherwise you might be better off having a trusted mechanic (a garage a family/friend uses) examine the car for any leaks or other faults.

A persistent mis-fire will likely trigger the engine management light. Does it run at normal temperature, in the middle of the gauge? I'm thinking along the lines of a broken thermostat, dodgy coolant temperature sensor and a dirty throttle body. With regards to the oil level, sometimes clean oil is hard to see on the dip stick.

Totally forgot i had posted this thread.. No engine management light. and yep normal temperature it runs out in the middle.

Had a few people check the oil and its fine, and anyways thats what oil lights are for hey? lol

New problem though.. Passenger said dipped beam light wont stay in or dodgy connection it keeps going off??

No-one else has said, but the bottom mark on the dipstick is "top up oil now", not "no oil". You'd still have something like 2 to 3 litres, depending on make and model (general advice).

pOST WHICH GENERAL AREA / Town you are in , sure 1 of the likely lads will contact and help you out , good bunch on this site and lots ok know how , to be sure

Whats wrong with the light.

Is the whole light/lens falling out or do you mean the bulb popping out or the electrical connector coming off.

Got the light problem sorted was a dodgy bulb.

New problem being a woman ...my radiator levels are low...obviously in this weather need anti freeze.do i need to dilute it or how much water and that do i put in before my car blows up?

If you just need a wee top up, and its already got antifreeze in it then just put pure water in.

I would guess it probably does have anti freeze in it, but if its looking a bit pale, (more water coloured) then just top up with pure anti freeze.

If you want to do a proper job then drain the system and follow mixture guid lines on back of product. (too much kerfuffle in this weather) lol.

  • Author

well..its way below minimum :|:| but my temp level is normal in the car..

So it doesn't matter what part water to what part anti freeze it is?? Also I wouldn't know how on earth to start emptying it that can wait lol.

As long as you can still see the water in the bottle, its still got PLENTY in the system, even if it is below the minimum mark. If you haven't bought anti freeze yet then just top it up with water. If you have then top it up with that.

Unless as i said it doesn't already have anti freeze in it, in which case i would strongly recomend getting a garage to drain and re fill with correct mixture, especially with the cold weather recently.
