Tuscan, cos the rest make you look like a fudge packer.

dont believe the hype from briskoda know it alls.... they are as reliable as most other stuff if looked after....

Porsche Boxster S, Practical with an awesome chassis! Don't laugh until you have driven one!

(Practical compared with the above)

This is fast becoming my stock answe rin fantasy threads but... Bowler Nemesis. What could be madder than tearing up the countryside?

Failing that, a land rover for off roading.

And in what way is a boxster more practical than a tuscan?

tuscan better for taller driver.

tuscan has bigger boot.

tuscan has longer touring range.

tuscan cheaper to service.

and so on - all without looking camper than George Michael in a public toilet.

Personally id swing for a mad track-day car for a couple of K.

would get quite a few days on track with the change.. and track car with a decent driver would run rings round the above...

Sorry, I consider reliable as part of everyday practicality. You can't even begin to compare Porsche with a TVR. TVRs are for men with beards and thermos flasks!!

How on earth do you know the touring range? Have you owned both?

Boxsters are definitely for men with beards :D

Yes I have owned both TVR's and Porsches. What have you owned?

:)

Hairdressers I thought! However, we should be careful how we sterotype this being a Skoda site and all.

You need to be a pretty big car anorak to enjoy TVR ownership. I am not saying it would be a bad experience just one you would have to be committed to.

Our main TVR mechanic (formerly an employee of the Factory) told countless horror stories about reliability. The AJP engine had around a 1 in 3 failure rate and in most cases the engine was ultimately replaced as a fix wasn’t reliable enough. Having said that, I would still love one for the raw excitement and drop dead looks. I have driven one and as I went over some cobbles, I couldn’t see anything as my vision had gone blurry, talk about firm suspension!! But 100% reliability isn’t of prime importance for a weekend car imho, fun is  The older V8s win it for me though as they sound so much better when tootling along than the AJP engines. Perhaps at full tilt the AJP does send tingles down your spine (and other places) but the V8 still makes me smile more.

And fire extinguishers

Well you are well qualified to comment then, however you are the first ex Porsche owner I have met that wasn't impressed. I have never owned either but I have driven the Boxster S and a Carrera 4. I thought the Chassis on the Boxster was superb.

have you owned one or are you just another ill informed internet warrior?

Many years ago the TVR dealer I mentioned, had an open day at a track to showcase one of the new TVRs. Almost nobody turned up sadly but it was just as well, one poor guy sat in the car and it caught fire. The clever door opening mechanism was so well hidden the guy couldn’t find it and the external door release wouldn’t work. They all had a good laugh about it later………… well the salesmen did.

Still I would love to own one someday.

I don't know of anyone who has even so much as looked at a TVR. Very pretty and sound just great but unless you have money to throw away then I (and everyone I know) stays well clear. 2 lads at work used to work at the TVR factory so no my information hasn't come from the internet.

Please Sir tell us more of your experiences, as I said before you are well qualified to comment. Which Porsche did you have and for how long and which TVR. Why did you sell them?

I had a real porsche but have driven a number of boxsters - I didnt say i wasnt impressed - the criteria for the purchase is for a weekend toy. As a weekend toy a relatively low spec boxster will not satisfy, an older GT3 911 might...

Having tracked both 911's and Tuscans I know which was far more fun. As for reliability had 2 tuscans, covered well over 20k in them and never had any "stranded" moments. Did similar miles in 996 C2 and had similar reliability bar a higher appetite for tyres and brakes, also did 15k in a 348 spider w/o reliability problems. Did 20k in a Jag XKR and it fell to bits. Did 10k in an Accord Type R and my ears hurt. Best fun I ever had on track was the Octy, closely followed by the TVR... Spinning @ Cadwell in the wet at close on 160 was more than an experience as Im sure Col will confirm.

The best fun you have had on a track is in an Octavia? I have heard enough!

As for caterfields etc they are great fun, pure track action... but of little use in real life... no to mention that like elise(varients) et al they are in most cases not that quick on track.

Sure 400hp takes bigger balls as Lewis would say but it is nice to be able to flex some muscle and make some noise.

Oooh ooh Megabusa!! Yes yes yes.:thumbup::thumbup: The above mentioned dealer had one of those came in and my Giddy Aunt was it fast. I had an awful time trying to get it moving as it has no real flywheel and the sequential box is a modified bike box. I couldn’t find neutral and there was no indicator to help. I didn’t dare thrash it as I honestly thought I might kill the car. How I would have loved a full weekend to play with it, especially if I could find a circuit and a nice man to give me some tuition in it;):). I think we valued it at around £27K though, so it wasn't cheap:(.

Well applying popular logic of one brush to tar them all...

At the 'Ring back in May I saw a Boxster park up after being on track it then proceeded to do it's best impression of a dragon.. spitting flames out of the rear vents. It quickly became apparent that it wasn't such a good idea to have such restrictive access to the engine.

I think there are a few pics in the 08 'Ring trip thread.

:)I've got my mad weekend car...the buggy in my sig. It's mad, general useless and a total waste of money but it never fails to put a smile on my face whatever mood I'm in.
