Anyone use M27 Hampshire?

Featured Replies

I see this morning we have a (brand new and extremely shiny) 58 plate Octy vRS hatch in Race Blue fitted with the subtle but oh so bright optional extra red and blue light pack in the back window.

Does anyone know whether they have switched to using 170bhp diesels rather than the TFSI motor?

Cheers for the heads up Fred.

You don't happen to know the Skoda part number for that do you, if it also fits the Estate I could be very intertested...

Why do you ask ? Do you fancy your chances of out-running them in yours ?

I know one of them is certainly not an oil burner on the M27.

There is definateley a 58 Reg Silver Tdi vRS one used by the police. It brought my neighbour home the other day!!!!!!!!! :o

My colleague at work reliably informs me the boys in blue have two new race blue vRS. They are most likely based at Cosham in Hampshire.

I've also seen an unmarked 3 series BMW the other night with the optional blue light pack very close to Cosham.

As for the vRSwagons we quite often see them pitch up when we call the boys in blue with the occassional drunk lorry driver (I work in Portsmouth Ferryport). I am also quite friendly with the local special branch in the port so will find out more from them!

i have been told of a dark golf tdi or gti floating around that way too. not got anymore details.

There is an unmarked octy II TDI in silver there that I've seen with the Christmas tree lighting pack.

Are radar detectors allowed there?

They don't use radar detectors on the cars, they just watch you tank past then light up like a christmas tree and hunt you down if you don't pull over.

Can they issue a ticket without having measured your speed with an approved measuring device (speed trap etc)?

Aren't their speedo's calibrated and then linked to the on board cctv? Thus all traffic cars have approved measuring devices...

I think there is an offence for travelling in excess of the posted speed but I wouldn't know for sure.

I was travelling behind one once on the M40, not too fast, mid to lateish 70's and up popped the scoreboard saying "Slow down".

So I did, funnily enough.

I've heard being tailgated by a police car equipped with a camera is a valid method of proving one's speed, but not here.

We have doppler radars, inductive speed traps and a bunch of lasers and that's about it. And the lasers and radars can't even be used on fog, snow, rain, high moisture in the air, etc. Plus RDs are allowed.

Goody.

Where is "here". Is it the UK or some foreign clime?

Romania

They use VASCAR which is a time and distance device. Don't even need to keep you in sight to prove average speed.

cars fitted with provida an on board video recording system that is calibrated at the start of each shift with the squares in the middle of the carriageway this records the evidence, shows the speed of the police car and shows the results of and time over distance tests that they perform to get your average speed and yes its all home office approved so can be used.

  • 3 weeks later...

saw two of these on the M27 last saturday, one blue (pulled someone over east bound) and one black (in an extreme rush westbound down the fast lane). both mk2 octavia but couldn't see if diesel or petrol.

best indicator of your real speed is a good nav system. tom tom 920 is accurate to 1 kph .. verfied by a police radar in 50 kph zone.. my indicated car speed 55 kph.. real speed on sat nav 51kph..actual 52 kph

on the radar.. (stopped for lights and tyre check and asked the gun crew!!)

A decent Satnav does take account of elevation and should therefore be more accurate than the speedo, even my N95 takes account of elevation when calculating speed as does my columbus when receiving the appropriate number of satalites (its possible to display altidude on both the N95 and columbus). As long as their are sufficient satalites being received then the height can be triangulated, just as the X and Y coordinates can.

Even taking into account the fact that its not always possible to get a 3d fix, the satnav should still be more accurate, although without the 3d fix there is a greater % error with true speed.

I was prosecuted for this, the two officers in the car behind me formed the opinion that I was exceeding the speed limit. They corroborated their evidence with a subsequent calibration check of their vehicle speedo.
