Recommend me a good telly, broadband and phoneline provider

Featured Replies

The only problem with Sky is that it's over DSL. You need a good phone line too start with otherwise it can be a nightmare. Same goes for any DSL connection.

I agree, most providers supply broadband over your BT line. O2 has installed its own equipment in my telephone exchange and were able to offer 4 times the speed of the BT equipment on the same phone line.

He may want too watch more than just QVC after 9 o clock though.:P

There is plenty on..

Dave, News 24 :P

Seriously though freeview isn't that bad you know and if you're short on money it's a something that once you have the box you have no further outgoings on it.

The only tv`s i will buy are Samsung, Toshiba, Panasonic or Sony.

As for Broadband and phone i use BT never had a problem with them.

Recently cancelled sky, just got fed up of repeat after repeat at £55 a month, so now on freeview :) BT broadband got the chop, £18 for a crappy download limit, moved to Be through o2 for £7.50 a month unlimited :D, Phones still BT though.

It not so bad if you use a BT line and a BT package as they can only blame themselves, but when using a 3rd party eg sky, orange BB. Come fault time they like too blame each other and leave you stuck in the middle with no interweb until they sort themselves out, which can take quite some in my experience.

Well we out shopping today, and we got mobile internet with t mobile, think to save some more money we are going to go for the mobile internet and save on a phone line and purchase a freeview in time but once again guys thanks for all the suggestions.

Just watch your usage on that mate

Dave is changing channels on VM to 128 soon.

Another +1 for Virgin media if you're in a cabled area and you might be able to geta V+ box. My friends parents have one and it's pretty good.

But if you're in a non cabled area i can recommend Sky as my cousin had Sky but my other cousin had problems with the Sky BB and they went with 02

Agreed. You can eat the small usage very easily with a streamed vid or a few funny emails with pics.

A side not is some credit agencies are now insisting you have a fixed line at your home address before approving a loan. Also be sure you can actually get a signal inside. We're in a high signal , 3G area but no networks work inside the house well.

I think you'll regret taking the mobile net contract out.

Well Virgin media is not in our area we checked today thanks to a fellow brisky member,

it is 3gb I think the boy said in the shop, only think we would use it for browsing brisky etc and e-mails and I belive you can watch you tube on it as well. £10 a month for the first three months then it's up to £15.

Be warned that when you watch stuff on youtube you're techinically downloading it, 3gb might not be that much

Broadband - ask around as some SKY areas are crap .

That said --I got a great first year deal with virgin -2m BB+ UNLIMITED CALLS for £20 , second year upped to £26 -against BT of £40.TV- I use freeview .

Really, I never knew that all I really know is how to type in a web address never thought youtube was download when you watch a video, not that I use youtube very often through maybe once a week or so.

Another vote for Sky here. I have unlimited 16 mb speed broadband, I actually get 13mb, but whats 3mb when you are up at that speed. Free landline calls (even though I dont use the home phone) and everything except sports and movies, £36 per month. (Plus BT line of course). No hassle, never a dropped connection unlike BT who I was with previously.

The manager at my daughter's nursery has had very bad experiences with Talk Talk. The contract was with her partner and even though the payments were coming out of her account they wouldn't deal with her.

She was having connection problems and her partner was away for a couple of weeks on business.

They have now left Talk Talk and have signed up with BT. It appears from what she says that their customer services are terrible.

This problem crops up with other services as well. If the account holder is male and a female rings them (or vice versa) then they won't deal with them. The answer is to get a male friend (or female) to make the call and you're in business.

I think you are in the VAST minority to be getting that speed from Sky. Everyone I know struggles to get more than 2mb speed (that's on the 8mb admittedly, but it's only 25% of the theoretical speed available).

Do you live IN the telephone exchange?

If you had got mobile broadband on O2 you would have got free broadband on you home phone line.

Eg £20 a months + BT line rental for mobile broadband, unlimited use of O2/BT wifi hotspots and a BE internet line at home.

Would have surely made more sense?

I know plenty of people who had problems with TT and have left. They are all in IT and found it wasn't reliable and you couldn't get an answer to any questions about why things were playing up.

Same with BBC Iplayer, a 1 hr show could be enough to hit the monthly limit.

What happens when you reach the limit, are you then billed per MB over the allowance?.

I would never use mobile BB as a main source of internet, its only intended as a now and again service hence the low download limits. I use my N95 as a modem on t-mobile out and about for brief spells of access.

IIRC 3 is £15 a month and each extra GB is £15 more.

Will kill you if you use more than your allowance.

Which is what the networks are counting on to help pay for their 3G licenses.

Mobile broadband isnt actually cost effective. There are plenty of cheaper wi-fi hotspot packages out there with unlimited use for £15/month.

As I said 02 give you £20 a month and that gets you 3GB mobile broadband, free home broadband and unlimited free use of the BT openzone wireless hotspots.

That is a good deal, if you only occasionally want mobile accesss. I'd never consider mobile as my only broadband access.

  • 3 months later...

VIRGIN -good deals on BB+phone .Not so sure about their TV.

Have a look -http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/mobile/broadband_tariffs.html

MY OPINION ONLY -stay clear of any phone thingy that involves BT line with other (SKY/TALKTALK ETC).Get yer phone from either BT or virgin (pref virgin) - then if you get probs -you're dealing with the one company .

As for Sky BB -seems to depend on area -some are good ,some are bad .

Well it's funny to see the post again!

Still using the t-mobile stick and have got used to it now, it seems to be better during the day than in the evening, you really have to time when you go on in the evening but it's not as bad as it first was.

Last night was the first time when it was working at full speed in our area at the back of the house so I could watch you tube etc something I can't watch at all in our area.

we went with SKY on the broadband/tv/sky talk deal,so far so good.

regards

dave
