How long does a tank last you?

Featured Replies

This post is inspired by Tailhappy's recent thread where he apparently fills up just once a year [i may be slightly exaggerating there, but only slightly]

So, i'm just wondering how long your tank of diesel lasts between fill ups - full --> near empty.

A tank lasts me just about a month, i fill up on pay day with about 480 - 500 miles done, and about 40 miles still left in the tank, my monthly fill keeps my vRS going for the whole month. I'm getting approx 50mpg from a tank.

I do not use my car for work, i live just a 2 minute walk from work so the car gets to lounge around all day.

EDITED to add the following:

key info i'd like to know is: How long does a tank last you?

Secondary info that would be nice to know includes: How many miles you get from a tank & your average mpg per tank.

Thirdly, perhaps some info that explains why your tank of fuel lasts so long or why it doesn't last you 2 minutes.

A full tank for me would last two weeks if I was just commuting to and from work, now that I get public transport I only half fill the car so I'm going to guess at two weeks for half a tank.

so do most get between 450 - 500 a tank ?

also how much to fill em up these days ?

My tanks of fuel before my girlfriend went to uni lasted exactly 6 days.

Now they last more like 12 or 14.... I travel 3 miles each way to work M - F and generally do 150 miles each weekend, either travelling to Cardiff and back once, or to Hereford and back 2-3 times...#

My fuel economy's taken a big hit now I'm only doing short runs - down to 47mpg or so :(. On the plus side I get 58 or 59 on the way down to Cardiff, whilst not hanging about :)

EDIT: Filling brim to brim I think I get about 550 miles or so to a tank

I'm currently getting about 430 out of a full tank.

I put in 44ltrs of v-power diesel last night = £52 and some shrapnel......

I'd say that i could probably get 550+ from a tank, as although i fill up with 40 miles left in the tank, mine seems to stay saying i've got 40 miles left for a bloody long time - even when it drops down to 35left 5 minutes later it goes back up to 40 miles left.....

I've been using bp ultimate the for the last couple of tanks but noticed no benefit over regular diesel, so i'm trying v-power for a couple of tanks to see if there is any difference. if not i'll return to regular diesel.

aprox 400

450 miles on average with a slightly heavier foot

Ive been filling with V power Recently as mine is remapped I can def ! feel a little more power higher up the rev range which is nice as your passing a 320d with a rather annoyed looking bloke sat there think b*ll*cks I've just spent 30 odd grand on this car hahaha

Hi all,

My tank lasts usually 4 days, but that does generally mean about 500 miles. traveling to work using the car is killing the milage on it... the car is only 16 months old and has 23,000 on the clock now... I hate it clocking up so quick...

but usually I find I am putting 5-6 tanks loads in a month at present.

did manage a trip home the other night though that hit on the trip computer 74mpg but I really can't be doing the M25 every day at 60-65 mph. getting lorries overtaking me not good.

Buy a car with the capabilities of this one to do 60-65mph on the motorway... I don't think so...

420 miles on an octavia petrol 2.0 fsi

Fabia vRS - about 415 miles. Works out at 50 MPG average from my fuel receipts using motorways at the legal limit.

I think some of you are missing the point of my question - I'm not so interested in how many miles your getting from a tank, but more, how long does it take you to use up a tank....

As i said, i was made curious by the thread Tailhappy had started that mentioned it takes him approx 4 months to use up a tank of diesel on his vRS.

So, key info i'd like to know is: How long does a tank last you?

Secondary info that would be nice to know includes: How many miles you get from a tank & your average mpg per tank.

does using v-power diesal make much difference to performance or fuel economy? i live in n.ireland in the back end of nowere so iv allways used the ordinary diesal because thats all you can get at the super markets. BP is the only one to do performance diesal but i didnt no whether or not to change because i wasnt sure if it would make a difference

Varies quite wildly, from lasting a weekend, to an entire month. I don't have to use the car to commute, so often depends what other trips I'm making. I also travel to London regularly, when I'd use a tank in a weekend. But often I get the train so....

So that's probably of no help whatsoever! ;)

Steve

(slightly tweaked Fabia, which is less economical than std :D)

If I am using the car for a driving holiday from Hertfordshire to Dorset/devon and then driving around when I get there the tank lasts 5 days/400 miles (holiday) and then summer outings (2 weeks/150 miles) on my return so:

Summer holiday time - 1 tank lasts 3 weeks and 550 miles:cool: (brisk driving).

In the winter I am guesstamating I will get 3 months from a tank (500 miles to tank, 20 miles a week). September to December = 3 months. Calcualtor says 6 months, but that can't be right:confused:.

TH

A tank typically lasts me less than a week as i do about 25k a year

I do 45 miles each day to get to and from work, plus 1-2 trips to London and back each week which are about 220miles each.

I spend way to much on fuel in a year, nearly £3k  when i last looked....

Edited to add: Millers Power Sport 4 is the way forward though saves me 6.5% on fuel cost

5 days for a tank on average for me in a 140 pd octavia

I fill up every other day as I commute to work. A full tank (I fill the expansion tank too) lasts anywhere between 350-450 miles depending how hard I drive the car. Average MPG during my commute is around 40-45mpg, similar around town too.

About 550-600 miles from the Diesel fabia, and thats getting a nip on,

Luckily that is exactly 1 weeks commute distance so 1 tank a week (Vented to the brim)

The petrol one has had one tank in a year and a half, but thats because its not moved in 9 of those months

The variance between miles per tank with the same car is really striking.

TH

Possibly the journey type making the difference, Mine is a fast A/B road combination for 55 miles with only about 3 miles of 30mph in the middle, good for keeping MPG up,

You'll always get variance like this IMO. People's use of a car can be infinitely different, and then you allow for different speeds of driver :)

I get 48 on a run (mway, cruise, 80) and 39-42 round town. That's with a hybrid Garrett equipped Fabia though :D

Hope to increase the MPG a bit too, with a bit of tweaking.

Steve

The vRS i feel isnt too great on fuel, i struggle to get more than 350 :(

i get around 500 miles to the tank on tescos finest with my vrs, which is usually about a week

The vRS i feel isnt too great on fuel, i struggle to get more than 350 :(

I think it's the driver struggling, not the car

:D

You should get way more than that mate, seriously. Unless all your journeys are short and in town?
