Power Steering light came on tonight!

Right here's the story:

I got into car for first time today at about 6pm. Drove for about 5mins when I realised the power steering light was on. Felt ok though.

So pulled over to check the manual which said it DOESNT come on if the fluid is low and that I should take it to Skoda.

However when I switched the engine back on again it was off.

Now would the weather have any effect on this do you think as it was about 3c according to the Fabia??

Just seems strange to me as the steering felt normal. :confused:

I have the same fault on my Fabia 1.9 tdi 2001. This summer almost every day I drive, light for servo turn on.

I searched web for this fault and it seems common for first series of fabia. Problem might be sensor for servo steering.

So I went to service and they checked and found that there are some fault with servo sensor, then they just erased that error.

Now I have the same problem again and I will go tomorrow to the service and they will probably try to replace this sensor.

I have the same problem on my 03 Vrs. I have to turn the ignition on and allow a few seconds before starting the engine. If i do not do this the light stays on and the steering stays stiff??

Any Ideas?

Just seemed weird to me cos my steering was normal?

Steering angle sensor failure. Just means that you lose your power steering when the light is on.

It's one of the fabias main weak points.

1. Steering Angle Sensor

2. Steering Pump

3. Steering Rack

4. Alternator

5. Battery

Could be any or all of the above, good luck in pinning it down, and be prepared to either live with it or part win many hundreds of pounds.

Sounds like the beginning of the PAS angle sensor packing up. It's how mine begain - firstly the light coming on with a beep and no other symptoms. Then the PAS would get intermittently heavy then light, then the light would come on with a BEEEP again... Finally it got to the point where the car started up, the light would come on, BEEEP at me, and there would be no PAS whatsoever. New sensor brought it back to life though. VAGCOM will confirm if the sensor is at fault.

That happened to me. Vag com confirmed intermittent fault with Sensor. Bunged in a new one. No difference whatsoever, except that vag com no longer reported the fault. Oah' and no other fault logged.

Today I went to service and they replaced power steering sensor. It costed about 105 euro for new sensor and replacement.

It seems OK now, power steering light is off and I hope that is it.

The light on my wifes car came on tonight. Switching on and off it went away.

Do i expect more problems as the steering became quite heavy for me(let alone for her) at one point.

Once restarted all was ok.

Can i do anything or hope it goes away for now?

Just to add to this thread.

Mine occasionally does this, but a full VAG-COM scan threw nothing up about the angle sensor, however it did throw up one about the battery (cant remember exactly) could this be a cause ?

Check the battery connections - they caused all sorts to happen on mine! The cinch nuts were tight, but the connectors weren't on far enough so they jiggled loose occasionally...

Also I used petroleum jelly on the terminals. Since doing that, my power steering light has never come back on:thumbup:

Mine did it once, the steering felt no different, stopped, re-started and it was fine from the on.

Are fabias an electrical nightmare. only bought it 2 months ago for the wife, everthing worked fine when I bought it, but now my power steering light is coming on also, sometimes but not ever-time, the steering fine thou, but all these electrical faults are adding up, drives door now wont open sometimes when using remote, interior light wont come on when opening drives door, but will with others doors, warning buzzer if you forget and leave lights on, now doest work, and on top of all these wee niggle problems had to fix rear door leaks. Do I still like this car, Just!! Maybe all the skoda jokes I was worried about before buying are for real.

I think that it is just down to breaking these faults down into sensible groups of items, like the driver's door not unlocking with remote could be linked to the interior light not coming on when the driver's door is opened - switch built into door lock. Steering problem might be battery low/old/dying etc. Use the search function as nothing you have written is really that new - so that means that you could find out a lot (if you are lucky) BTW I would not underestimate the power of a scan tool - or getting the car scanned - all modules that would take some of the guessing and working blind out of the equation.

Yes would have to agree that three of the problems could be the drivers door switch, and now you mention the battery I noticed that the inspection hole at the top is not green but black, according to the hand book this states the battery dyeing, you mention getting the car scanned is this expensive and is it like a diagnostic.

I can't say what the charge is but yes this is either a dealer job £35>£50 (guessing), indep VAG specialist job, find a new friend that just happens to have VAG-COM - or buy VAG-COM or a slighlty cheaper scan tool that is for VAG so that it can interrogate all the car's smart modules - I'd say avoid the Halford's Gunson VAG SCAN one on cost - unless Christmas has come early - ebay maybe, a bit risky if you don't know what you need.
