So, I've been doing some "research" about which gearboxes people prefer. I've had no clear answer. So now I'm trying to get some stats off of you aswell. So, choose your poison and maybe if you're generous enough, describe why did you pick that one.

You may want to expand the poll. At the moment, I'd vote manual. But given a DSG option on a car, I would consider that.

On the smaller cars I have owned, I always chose a manual, but on the bigger ones ( jag. Merc. etc ) I prefer automatic.

There are arguments for all transmition sytems in my opinion. I prefer a manual sytem for smaler cars like Mrs Stigs Ferbi and an auto box for bigger cars and 4X4's. It's the medium size that I find difficult to decide on.

I realy fancy an auto bos if I get a Tdi vRS, however, with petrol prices coming down, I now fancy a 2.0 FSI vRS with a manual box

No I kept it like that for a reason. To keep stats more concentrated. If you wish to explain why you'd choose one or another, you have the liberty to do so by posting :)

I'm a sucker for manual. Yes, big cars are more comfortable with automatic box but since I don't like big cars ( I'm not an ecofreak, I just don't like them ) I'm all for manual shifting.

I really like manual cars, I've never driven an automatic but I'm not sure I'd like not being in full control of what gear I'm in :)

Horses for courses I say.

Inner city driving  go with an auto.

Having fun have a manual :D or maybe a DSG.

Off roading have an auto too - makes hill start so much easier :)

I've just switched to auto (well DSG) after driving mostly manuals for 20 years. I have driven autos on and off over the years, but a worsening back problem has made an auto a neccesity for my daily drive.

I have to say the DSG is a great thing: pretty much all the control of a manual, but the ease of an auto if you choose. I've found how good an experience an auto is varies greatly according to how good said auto is.

As to those of you that have never driven an auto: on the open road a manual is better for sure, but in traffic, and auto is many times better.

Like I said, I've driven both over the years: I took driving lessons in a manual, practised in an auto (Mark 4 escort...yuk), but until now all my own cars have been manuals. My better half had never driven an auto until today when she first tried the Leon, and found it very strange.

auto w00p!¬

so much fun like playing a racing game :D

Agree!

Just puch the pedal and off you go!

Have driven an old (Mk1 i think) Nissan Micro auto and it was like a little go kart!

Would love an auto maself...

Phil

Auto for big motorway cruisers and driving in busy traffic and cities. Manual for 'fun' driving.

I was a stalwart manual driver

until i found the joys of DSG

now

I dislike manual boxes and in the future when i buy a car i will take what type of box is in the car as a major point in deciding what i buy.

My dad had one. Surprisingly good for a 1.2 litre.

Manual every time for me. I like to drive a car, I don't want a car to drive me, so I dislike ABS and traction control aswell.

In this order:

DSG

Manual

Semi-Auto (tiptronic et al)

CVT

Auto

:)

:iagree: but with the top two swapped round, until convinced otherwise ;)

I can't stand automatic cars, I feel like a passenger driving one, which I don't like being either!

I had a clutchless car once, it had a normal shift but I still felt terribly detached from the driving experience. Long live the clutch pedal I say.

I like full autos in some circumstances. Like others have said, in bigger cars it does make more sense. When driver involvement isn't really the name of the game :)

My Dad's Jag, for example, suits it down to the ground. And it's quite nice sometimes, just cruising about. But I always like returning to a manual afterwards....

Steve

Driving an automatic you will experience lower stress levels - says he who still drives a manual. :o

Manual all the way.

My Land Rover was an Auto ok for cruising on the Motorway with a Caravan on the back.

Manual was better for off roading,

If it was a car mainly for town and motorway cruising then auto all the time, If i were to buy a Superb it would be an Auto.

Enjoy manual in the Fabia for "brisk" driving, but some times a pain in town, The Roomy, wanted a diesel so no choice in what 'box was available.

Saying all the above Swmbo doesn't like Auto's, so the next car will probably be manual.

Unless in heavy traffic, which I'm mostly not, manual for now, although the CVT on the Honda Jazz (Mum's car) makes a good case for itself, and I'd give DSG a chance, but would like a good long test drive (we're talking several hours so I can get used to the car, then play with dense stop start, free flowing town, m/way and A or B road blasting).

Only ever driven one Auto --Ford Zodiac --gives age away - nicedrive ,but still prefer manual - suits my driving - after all the car deciding what gear it needs ?? shades of cart before horse (to me ).

Other than the Honda CVT (qv) which is about as good as I am, I agree. Oh yeah, and I've yet to drive a conventional auto that shifts as smoothly as I can (not always do maybe, but can).

If I meet anyone under the age of 40 with an automatic, who isn't:

a) Female

B) Disabled

Then I suddenly get a huge urge to rip the living **** out of them.
