New Superb a disappointment

Featured Replies

I am really sorry to have to say this but I think that the new Superb is a bit of a disappointment.

The new Superb, (I saw it for the first time yesterday), its not the car I was looking forward to. It seems only a little bigger than the Octavia, the interior is a little cramped (is this my imagination??) The old superb was bigger than the last model Passat and the new Superb is no where near the current Passat. The styling, is it a little stumpy??? The styling is the poorest aspect of the new car...

Folks, I really am not trying to annoy anyone here, I know the car has good reviews, its just seems like Skoda have lost the plot a little......

The new superb has no relationship to the passat at all, unlike the previous one which was basically a chinese LWB Passat. The new one has a new chassis that is not in use in any other VAG car at all. Yes its an odd design, but due to EU legislation thats the way all cars are heading. Some of the running gear I believe is borrowed from the new facelift Octavia.

  • Author

Yeah, is based on the octavia. Not sure why they did'nt go for the passat chassis? I know what you are saying about the EU regs on pedestrian safety. The Pugeot 407 is a fairly ugly car as a result.....The car is a streched octavia and looks a lot like it.

ur obviously blind then

  • Author

No.....am not blind, are you Mac Rs?....

I know the car is an improvement on the old model, but I was expecting something better....

just like the water in galway eh?

  • Author

Mac RS is as quick as his name suggests.....this is a forum about the Superb II remember?

each to their own. Just look at the Fiat multipla !! but some people have bought it.

you wouldnt get me in an Audi TT - gorgeous looking car but like driving a go kart - what suspension ?

the superb is a good all rounder. We have just sold an A6 - i defy anyone to find a smoother driving car....provided you are on the best autobahn quality road - as soon as you come off onto the back roads it rattled your fillings out. It was better, in my opinion, than the new superb in some situations but worse in others. The superb is a more useful everyday car.

never thought of it as a stretched octavia - cant disagree as you have a point. but then this is a not necessarily a bad point as the octavia is a good car. the only critism of the octy that i can find is too much wind and road noise at speed - something you dont get in the superb.

i wish people would stop comparing it to the passat - its nothing to do with the passat save one or two small items of trim from the passat parts bin (elec window switches ?).

Anyway - have you driven the new passat. bloody awful !! and i own a B5 passat which i love - i thought it was easy and that i could simply trade up to teh new passat. no chance. not worth the money. terrible ride quality for us.

so in summary - you have some valid points but consider the fact that you dont stand and look at your car all day, you live with it and drive it. the interior is simle, effective and very well appointed. Yes, the ar*e end is a bit...well...unconventional...but do i care ? nope - not a bit as i will appreciate the interior environment and quality of the ride far more than i shall worry that the rear might look like a megane mk1 saloon !!

yea Mr. Galway have you read the review in the Times, Independant, Herald etc..all great reviews...ive ordered a elegance 1.8TSI DSG with Columbus Sat Nav.

So start drinking bottled water..as your judgement is screwed just like the water..

:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup: good choice sir !!

God you musta been drinking, there's a pile of room more in the back, the front is also more spacious and comfortable, you gotta leave the Advocat alone and get on the Whiskey mate, the whole thing is superior.

Up until the last line, I was convinced this was a troll.

Anyway, my 2p worth....

New Superb is bigger than the old one, and (AFAIK) bigger inside than pretty much everything else in the class (James, you have the dealer PPT demo I presume, and that's what it said on that, didn't it ?). Think it's definitely your imagination. That said, I still have access to my old one, so will park them up and get back to you on that. The old one was very deceptive in terms of size. You always looked at it and thought that doesn't look very big, until you got inside.

As far as styling goes - moot point I guess. I think most new cars are ugly compared to older "classics", but as has been said elsewhere, this is more often than not NCAP requirements for safety. The rear end I suspect is 90% function, and 10% design ("let's get the thing working, then we'll work out what to make it look like"). Hell, look at the "new" BMW with the twindoor design, and it's ugly as anything (actually IMO, most BMW's are ugly anyway, but that really *is*)

As with anything to do with personal choice, each to their own. I've bought both my Superbs without a test drive, but I doubt many other people would. I've had both with tinted windows, yet I know a lot of people would express negative views on that too. I never used to like diesels til I drove one, and now I wouldn't change back. Personal choice each time.

It's a shame you don't like it, but on the upside, at least it means there's one less on the road, so I can feel smug about buying a great car for a lot less money than the Mundane driver in front of me :)

Last week I read a test in a car magazine. They entitled it "What a car!". Obviously the design is a very personal matter, but some facts are very clear:

- the rear passengers space: both wide and height are similar to BMW series 5 or Mercedes class E. The lenght (space for legs) is bigger than in series 7 or class S

- the riding quality was comparable to premium saloons. The journalist said that if we could remove the badges, many people would think they are driven a much more expensive car ;)

- and finally the value-for-money ratio: the new Superb is just unbeatable.

So, people may like its design or not, but the new Superb is clearly better than its predecessor

The leg room for the driver isn't really any better than the Octy II and the wide centre console makes for noticebly less room around the left knee thatn in the Octy. There is less room around the pedals thatn in the Octy and no right foot rest.

The headroom in the back isn't very good.

I was searching for a review and came across the TopGear website:

Skoda Superb expert car review verdict - BBC Top Gear

is it me, or have the teenage web-journo's got above themselves and reviewed the old model but forgot to tell the graphics department?.

Top Gear is a brand that has as much to do with cars as X-Factor has to music.

Has anyone actually bought a Superb? I have an Octavia 2.0 tdi manual..looking to trade up.

If you look at the section entitled Performance they make it clear that this is the old model they have reviewed by talking about the "new model launches in September", but posted a pic of the new one - Shame on you Top Gear. I would have expected better.

Cheers all BTW - wish I could afford to buy a new model Sup - Stuck with an old one for now!

Do I understand you correctly, are you saying that the current passat is bigger than the new Superb ? If you are, I think that the only explanation is that you are drunk...:D

I have got to agree with you 100% here, a lot of people wll look and think this is a review of the new car, double shame on you Top Gear:thumbdwn::thumbdwn:

I drive the old Superb and must admit when I sat in the new one it SEEMED smaller. Maybe the centre console is bigger which gives the impression of less space. It's all subjective since the guys with the measuring tapes say it's bigger - so it must be true.

Purchasing a car is often about emotion and feelings and to me it felt smaller (compared with the MkI Superb) and nothing will deviate me from this impression.

My wife drives an Octavia and it felt akin to that.

Other than that, it looks like Skoda have done a fine job producing a well specced and economical car (I even like the looks).

i have to agree with you - i had the same feeling. I was comparing it to a new shape A6 which has a very different feel about the interior to the superb. the superb did feel narrower but i put that donw to the A6 having a very low and wide feel about it. I checked the data and technically the superb is pretty wide but i guess its about how the space is used and where exactly the width measurement is taken.

this fact did not put me off as i placed an order for the superb.

regarding the right foot rest - i think you will find this is pretty unique and if you comare the superb with the passat, A6, E-class, 5 series then none of these (as fas as i know) have a right footrest.

You may well be right about those other cars not having one, but I cant help wonder why . Having gotten used to it in the Octavia I miss it in every other car I drive now :thumbdwn:. Also on the width of the car, why have they made to door storage so narrow, and with no bottle holder at the end again like the Octavia has , a small thing (pun intended) but one that I feel is a big oversight on Skodas behalf :finger:

Reading all the replies is interesting alright....yes, I know that the rear leg room is as big or bigger than an S class.....The engines etc are better than the mk1 superb...

And as far as I’ve read its external dimensions are greater than the mk1, not sure if the wheelbase is longer, I don’t think it is.

BUT none of this has got anything to do with my issues with the new model.....in my opinion the mk1 superb was a great alternative to the golf, it was bigger, better value for money, I had one, it was great....

the the superb mk1 , a good alternative to the passat, bigger, better value etc.....there is a trend, Skoda build cars that use/exploit the VW parts bin which is very good....

I really think that the new superb seems smaller and has a style that is not as conservative as previous skoda models......not as unusual as a Multipla.....

I guess I was looking forward to a Skoda Superb in the A6 mould.....using the passat as a donor.

I see where you're coming from now, I was actually hoping it would be a cheap Phaeton myself

Yes, well done Top Gear you have done yourselves proud there

I agree entirely. The Octy II front door pockets are very well designed and hold a standard bottle of wine as well as a good numbers of maps etc. In comparison, the Superb II door pockets are very narrow and have no room for upright bottles.
