Cam position sensor error fab vrs

Featured Replies

After plugging my car into a mechanic's laptop, got the cam position sensor g40 error come up.

I'm taking my car to skoda tomorrow to confirm this, armed with this error code. perhaps it is the reason it hesitates to start sometimes and stalled once.

If the cam position sensor can be replaced under warranty, I believe they should renew the cambelt and water pump free of charge?

my mechanic told me as they are having to strip it down they should really put a new timing belt in.

What are the dangers of not doing this? does the cambelt weaken when it is removed?

car has done 23k miles. 3 years old.

thanks for your help

The line the dealer will probably take is, as the cam belt and water pump are not faulty, they are under no obligation to replace them free of charge.

However, they should be willing to replace them for the price of the parts only, since the labour will not factor into it. So rather than paying £300 to have this done at 60,000 miles (or 4 years), I would pay for the belt and water pump, and effectively save on the labour costs.

The warranty should cover the faulty item and any parts that are incidental in replacing that item. It is not good practice to re-fit a used cam belt, so if it needs to be removed to replace the sensor, then it too should be replaced and charged on the warranty claim.

Anything else such as the belt tensioners, rollers, water pump and coolant are not really part of the claim and it would be upto you to pay for their replacement if you wanted them to be changed.

I think that they would take the line if its not due to replacement it would be refitted.

However this is all acedemic as you dont need to remove the cambelt to replace the sensor anyhow, there is a grommet in the timing belt cover to it can be unbolted and removed and the plug fed through. I would however check the timing ring on the back of the camshaft pulley hasnt come loose.

hey, got my car fixed lastweek! hats off to skoda for this on doing a competent job. Had the cam sensor replaced under warranty and the service man, even suggested what you did about getting the cambelt done at same time! so i had that done and the water pump. Had to pay 20% of the charge to get the rear doors sealed. Car seems to be fine now and skoda have really surprised me with this as didnt expect them to come up trumps.

thanks for your help

A good result then, excellent.

I've just had the same problem with my '03 Fabia vRS.

G40 Cam position error came up.

Local dealer was going to charge me £160 for the part and to have it fitted. (They said it would take approx. 2 hours)

Shocked at the thought of paying £160 I just ordered the part at £29.23 +VAT and decided to have a go at fitting it myself (being a mechanical engineering student, how hard can it be?).

Removed pipe coming up from the intercooler, removed timing cover, removed sensor bolt with 10mm socket, removed grommet and pulled sensor lead through.

Then just put in the new sensor and put everything pack together in reverse order.....TOOK ME ALL OF 20 MINS!!!!!!

Easy way to save £130 in just 20mins! Thanks to Briskoda for the info.

I need to do the same job, does anyone have the part number for the sensor and any pics to give me a heads up before I start..

Sorry for the Mega bump, have a feeling that I need to do this too. Anyone know the part number?

For a Mk1 vRS, it's looking like 038957147G.

Hi,

following fault code appeared:

1 Fault Found: 19463 -  Camshaft Position Sensor (G40): No Signal        P3007 - 35-10 -   - - Intermittent Readiness: N/A

Sometimes starts up really badly when engine is warm.

Is this correct sensor?

Thanks in advance.

Tried to give this a go today, not as successful as I was hoping. Removing the intercooler pipe was fine, the timing cover was however another story.

The problem was the one last retaining bolt on the cam cover...... You can see above that they are all slacked off, I have removed the pipe above the brake fluid reservoir as well to allow for better access....... yet there was no way to get to it, at the back of the cam cover under the round steel thing in the pipework assemblies. (EGR valve?)

I am open to ideas. So frustrating. At least she went back together without incident.

You need a flexible joint thing with a small extension, other than that's it's takink the egr off.

You basically, hold the 10mm socket on the nut then connect the flex joint and extension bar in the gap between the egr bolt and the thing next to it.

I couldn't get my egr off so it's def possible

P.s, that's the rocker cover btw, the cam belt cover is the thing on the left, that's comes off without undoing anything, it's just a couple of clips.

Access to the rocker cover bolt is also better if you take that off, (which you need to do anyway to actually take the rocker cover off once you've got that bolt out)

So I was actually going overkill for the sake of the job? I just need to remove the cover over the cambelt to gain all the access to the sensor that I need? (Also, I found the clip on the front. Where was the other one?)

Couldnt tell you the exact location of the sensor sorry, but the wire which goes to it is on the front of the engine so you can trace it from there if needed.

(there's 2 connectors there I think the grey one goes to the crank sensor (which is behind the oil fiter)

Def looks like you've gone overkill though, think the other clip is on the back side, can't remember sorry.

I have some memory that the cam sensor was at the bottom of the cam belt but not had need to find that one yet so it is only a guess.

Item 26 here.

Thought so, you can see it on the last pic in that link, at 4 o'clock on top pulley.

I can see it. Threading the other end of the sensor cable through that little gap and attaching it is going to be interesting.

Knowing how big that other end is, I'd say try and get the sensor through the gap, but I recon that cowling will have to be loosened off, let us know how you get on.

Looking like a guide is on its way....lol

The plug goes thru the cover with a bit of jiggling it's only a 15 min job to change the cam sensor.

Like ****ing a kidney stone

Ive learnt that when people say 15mins = several hours.

Just to note, ive had issue with length of the wire, the above link shows the connector and bracket far nearer to the expansion tank thing:P than mine, mine is at the end of the block.
