standard VRS brakes rusting over night

Featured Replies

my fabis vrs is the 21st car ive owned and ive never seen anything like it its a 2006 (06) with 21000 miles on it disks front and rear get a fine layer of rust over them over night more so than anything ive seen before then when you drive off initial braking you hear it coming off

has anyone else experienced this or have any advice I am in the forces and need to leave the car for 4 months and was going to just cover it and go wouldnt trust anyone to look after it proporly in my absence

It's just surface rust, mine tends to get a layer when I park overnight and it rains, nothing much to worry about.

Mine does the same too. Just live with it or park it inside.

Mines rusts after i wash it lol

Just basic physics - bear metal and damp nights (condensation) = rust.

is this thread for real?

Hi mate, I too am in the forces and I get exactly the same problem, takes a surprising amount of force to pull off some mornings, ive just left it as a 'vrs thing' !! Mine is a 06 with 29k almost same as yours.

Oh no no no no.

You must be gentle when pulling off in the morning, softy softly catchy monkey.

Yet again, first class Lummox advice.

Unprotected metal + moisture = rust..... nooooo

Mine never go rusty because I give them a good coating of WD40 after a wash :)

Brakes are crap, but they look good on ebay :)

Is that safe to use Len?

Davy

Spraying a lubricant onto brake parts, NOT a good idea. It will burn off, but in doing so, it will glaze the pads.

Only if you want to sell your car for spares Davy :) Due to the slight reduction in friction :)

That would be a wise move mate, as I will be in a taxi :D

instaed of using WD40, why not try axle grease after you wash it.. it wont run off then and will last alot longer!! :)

Are they Military Police then?

As others have said, it's only surface rust, nothing to worry about ... think of it as a free pad de-glaze :)

Even spending 4 months away they are not going to disintegrate matey

Eh no, that does not work if they were wet when it went into the garage - I know! This will happen with any marque of car - seems worst when you have rear discs though.

happens to me, sounds like it's coming from the rears more on mine. I gently apply the handbrake a few seconds at a time while driving straight. Obviosuly I check and make sure no one is behind me when I do this.

Seems to sort it for that day, I only experience this in the winter.

Have your others cars been front wheel drive and have disks back and front?

Is it front, back or both?

Common on lots of cars I've owned, including those with drum brakes all round. If you're leaving it for any time, try to leave with hand brake off. This doesn't stop rusting, but stops pads rusting to disc. If handbrake pads have rusted to disc then a little reverse nudge often frees them better than driving forward. Once moving a few normal gentle stops will clean it all up.

4 Fe + 3 O2 ---> 2 Fe2O3

Since your discs are Fe and the air contains O2 and so does water and they get hot, which increases the rate of reaction.... ;)
