Petrol doesn't taste as bad as I expected!

Featured Replies

Afternoon. Just a little re-count of my fun today.

I'd filled up after my first 200 miles with my Mk1 fester a few weeks back and worked out that; 1, it was doing about 30mpg and B, that 200 miles was about the limit to a tank full.

So I set out today after doing about 145 miles to this tank thinking that I might be running low as I've done loads of short journeys and had the car running on the spot while setting up the carb and stuff... sure enough I ran out on the way back from the shops!

Fortunately I had a full can in the boot for just such an eventuality - unfortunately I'd lent the nozzle to a friend with my other can!

So I tried to siphon the petrol using the washer jet tube... got it trickling out on the first suck but it didn't keep going so tried again - hence the taste test! Didn't work again and I came to the conclusion that even if it did it would take ages through such a small bore tube.

My solution: I split the corner of a heavy duty carrier bag that I'd just acquired with a christmas present and stuffed it down the filler neck and then used it as a funnel! Worked a treat! I was quite chuffed with myself tbh. :)

I always find that after I've syphoned petrol I'll be burping vapours for the rest of the day! Managed to get petrol in my eye earlier when I was tinkering with my mates Volvo. That hurt a bit.

I would avoid drinking any amount for health reasons :)

What about diesel?

Both will kill you in the end.

Maybe a bit sooner if you smoke and sip petrol....

Rots your teeth too ;)

Yes me too, well a friends motorbike and whilst under it one of the pipes which was taped together was slowly leaking, luckily my boss (we were at work) had been in the forces and knew what to do (dunking me under a cold water tap to wash my eye out). it was sore for the rest of the day but certainly better than hospital.

I found the pipes on the fuel tank but I dont have a pipe to connect on to it.

Tried following the Haynes guide to having the fuel pump drain the tank but either I cant follow instructions or I just missed something. But it didnt work for me.

So i stuck a hosepipe in. Felicia on the top of the driveway and Favorit parked on the hill at the side to see if gravity would help. I think I only got about 1ltr and petrol doesnt taste nice!! also stings your skin.

What am I doing wrong?

I once did a major rear end repair to a Vectra. Stripped it out and sent it around to our bodyshop. They jigged it etc and then I put it back together, It went back around for final finishing when they called me to say it wouldnt start. I popped over to finally work out I had connected the fuel pipes around the wrong way. So with the car on the floor I scooted under and popped one of the lines (Vaux have quick release lines). I popped the return line but as the pump had been presurising that line it burst off and covered me in petrol (right in the face), had the nasty effect of not only tasting nasty but also drying my eyes out and sticking my eyelids to my eyeballs, ****e that hurt.

Thats nasty but I couldnt help but laugh.

You silly sod, why didn't you simply roll up an old newspaper and use that as a funnel, and deliver the content's as fast as possible
