BMW e39 M5 - Talk me out of it.

Featured Replies

Id love to talk you out of an M5 but I'm unable to.

Imagine the sound of the V8 when you gun it..... the 50/50 balance, the 400 pounds of torque, the luxurious interior.....

Why did you reason it as being better than 18k for a new octy? Do you need a new Octy, or was that just your way of justifying to yourself?

Keep up the good work Tom

So it begins! :P

Hang on, your MSN is on about a 540i

The simple answer is that you don't Tom.

No. That's the cheapest e39 M5 on the trader, and doesn't look to be in particularly good nick TBH, despite the protestations of the seller.

I'd put a month's wages towards a better kept model if I were you.

I wish I still lived with my folks :(

You sir have a point. However a bit of recent refinancing and a nice whacking great lump off the debt due to my gritter driving etc have freed up around £400/month.

Well an M5 is more like 60/40 balance, but who am I to nitpick :P

With the deals on Octavias at the moment I have been sorely tempted. 1.8TSI DSG L&K or a grey vRS SE are both in the running - but I have a distinct feeling I'd regret it.

But yes, you hit the nail on the head

Alan - it all started because my uncle has just bought an e39 530i M-Sport, and I fell in love with it completely. I do love my 328i but realising how cheap the nice e39s are has raised my eyebrows a bit. I couldn't get a 530i as that would be copying him, and 540s are nice and cheap - but its not much more money for an M5... or is it??

Well in a way thats just it. Its the sort of car I could never afford if I didn't live with the parents... There is something quite sad about such a nice car on the parents' drive though :(

Tom... stop being a **** and grow up :D

And taking the girlfriend in, telling her to not moan so loud as your Mum heard last time, then the waking your parents up with the V8 through 4 exhausts because the house rules say she can't stay overnight....... :D

You can live in your car, but you can't race a house!!

Ah well, perhaps its not such a great idea then. *sigh*

I truly am astonished how cheap these things are to buy now though - even at £10k its a huge amount of car for the money...

Still seriously considering a 540i though - only thing putting me off is the manuals are like rocking horse poo.

What about a 7 series, they're even cheaper and generally fully loaded? :D

The whole 'alot of car for the money' is a bit of a red herring though isn't it? TG did that thing about Jag's a couple of years back - said you could pick up an XJ6 for silly money, but if you did it would continue to depreciate like a stone and you'd have to scrap it. You can get 20 year old 911's for 10-15k IIRC but would you want to? Only if you've got a proper car for daily use and enough spare cash to pay for the servicing....

I saw your update in the debt thread Tom and for what it's worth my advice would be to keep on doing what you're doing till you're debt free (or near as damnit). Well done btw.

More sensible perhaps??

I'm not green in that I understand you need to be able to afford to run a new one to be able to afford to run a used one, but the the bargain purchase price offsets a huge amount of that.

I know I need to keep the 328i for a while really, I do enjoy it afterall. Its just hard to resist the temptation to spend money on it to make it the car I want it to be - £800 for a full suspension rebuild/upgrade, £300 to sort the brakes etc isn't justifiable on a car thats worth about £1000 :(

If your car isn't worth much, but is a good runner, then surely it's simple maths - £1200 worth of upgrades or £6000 on a different car?

Have you got 6k lying around? If so, why aren't you 6k less in debt? Engage brain laddie!

My mate has one with a H&S exhaust with crossover and it sounds fantastic.

Need to take great care though, if the vanos goes its going to be more than the cars worth.

Yes...The boomer! Ahem.

I'd go for it. If I had the money and I really like the car, I'd definitely go for it. Problem is, I dont have the money and I don't like the car either. It's just too big(ish) for me. I'd like a much more sensible 3. series. And since you have it, why not stay with it? Maybe upgrade to E46 330i or so. Those should be dirt cheap aswell.

I know I'm seriously interested in E46. I'm gonna get me one soon(ish).

Don't do it Tom. Use your spare £400 to pay off more of you debt. Or use 3 months to sort your car out then continue repaying. Try and do that for another year and have a rethink at the begining of next year.

I don't know why people bother replying to these threads.

You know it's inevitable he'll buy another money pit , spend a fortune on it , then sell it for less than he paid a few months later

Cough cough cough ....what did I say yesterday

As lovely a machine it is Tom, save your money! Your going to need it, things are just so uncertain at the moment!

20mpg
