S4

Was browsing through the ads in the back of Autocar when I saw an S/99 reg Audi S4 (2.7 bi-turbo V6 265BHP) Avant on sale for

Dont know about the price, but mileage wouldnt bother me having previously owned a bmw which I p/x'd with 150k on the clock, and currently owning a mondeo with 122k on the clock with no problems.

..or, find a 2.7T A6 and remap it, gives about 310bhp....

(I've not been looking at A6's, honest, really, ummm.....)

I'd suggest the difference between the BMW and mondeo examples from Manny is the lack of a turbo...maybe urban myths but I thought turbo'd engines have a far shorter life span over NA counterparts.

That said this engine in the S4 is hardly strained.

i wouldn't worry about the mileage,i've test driven a few S4's in the last few weeks as i'm toying with the idea of getting one.

i drove one with full history and 132K on the clock and it felt like one with 65K on the clock.

was still running orginal turbo from what i could make out of the Service History and receipts.

only thing that puts me off is the fuel consumption, the owners i've met are luck to average 28mpg on a run, dropping to 20mpg when pushing on.

worth bearing in mind.

power costs... the more power the more it's gonna drink, it's that simple.

I'd not be worried about the life of the engine, but most of the KKK's have about 75k tops in them before I'd start thinking about replacements. (and thats x2 on the v6's)

are we having a mass skoda exodus?

Me me me tooooooooo...except I have a highlands trip coming up that at 20mpg will be, erm nearly 50 gallons...

back to the s4:

adrian, i guess it's what your usage of it would be. if you're going to pile on the miles on it, then i personally would think twice about getting a biturbo audi of that age/mileage.

Agree any older car I would only trust as a spare/weekend fun unless oyur lucky to be within taxi / lift range of work. I think the S4 would be a great motor and perhaps even bypass the realiability issues based on the it's an Audi logic...

I'd quite simply love the "big car" idea if I didn't do 20k+ miles a year. Okay most are around town during the week, but the odd nipping to Wales or Scotland soon add up in fuel. Old miser, maybe...

Could always LPG it..or is the LPG tax discount over soon?

Looking at the price and the power I thought it was quite a good price.

FASH and full leather interior plus all the usual "toys"......like I said quite tempting.

However over the last 4 years I have done 17.5k/year so, putting on my "thinking" hat, starting off at 82k then 17.5k /year isn't really a good thing. :(

Looked lovely although I think they actually used an RS4 picture.

It's nice to dream......

I reckon it could take it easily enough - lots of old Audis still running with absurd mileage.

However, the risk of something wearing out and going wrong will be higher, and the cost of repairing it will be higher...

Rob.

I've always fancied an S4, but I've heard some horror stories about how they devour turbos (particularly when chipped). I suppose with an extended warranty, you'd be OK.

It'll be interesting to see how the new V8 S4 bears up when it starts to hit 4-5 years old.

Anyway, www.rs246.com has plenty of info.

I can see myself buying a different car in 12-24 months, and the S4 will be high on the list.

If economy is a consideration then i wouldnt even bother looking at it (if you do you might just be too tempted to buy it there and then!). If economy isn't that much of an issue then... :D Most of your 17.5k pa miles are presumably commutingly sensibly to/from work so it's not like it's going to be driven into the ground or anything.

Hmmm just think v6 = mandatory exhaust change, bi-turbo = induction kits for noise etc. mmmmm. Where was this advert again? ;)
