Hard to fill up

Featured Replies

I am having trouble filling my car, This has happened twice in a row now, I have run the fuel down to 1/4 tank and tried to fill it up as normal but the fuel takes ages to go down the pipe then goes quite quick once the air has been vented, then slow again but on both occasions the fuel gauge has only gone to between the 3/4s and full, what could be wrong or is the small vent inside the filler blocked some how

Strange one that

Could possibly be the vent.Sorry for not being much help.

I have had this a couple of times when filling up at around 1/4 tank. I now run it until the refuel warning, and have no problems.

Pull the nozzle back about an inch or so, find mine cuts off too soon if i dont. I also have to give it time to push the air out of the tank by stopping the pump whilst waiting for it to stop gurgling!

I had this when I first got my Elegance station wagon, it used to be a real curse as it constantly blew back and took ages to even get a small amount of diesel into the tank, the pump would even time out before I could get a quarter of tank in to it. The strange part was that some days it would take fuel without any problems and then wallop the blow back started up again.

Took it back to the dealer who said he had fixed the problem, which he duly had and the first thing I noticed missing was the little piece of white plastic located just below the filling hole, which I presume is a vent hole and excess fuel return.

No problems ever since.

Yes thats whats happening with mine:(

Try removing the little white plastic nib and see if that resolves your problem.

rock the car too might release any blockages

That does not give you a permanent fix, plus you feel a bloody fool standing at a gas station pump trying to rock your Skoda from side to side, especially if you are a woman driver.

It is a fixable problem and the dealers know, or should know, how to fix it.

I always get this if I try to fill up with the pump on the opposite side (which I no longer attempt).

I almost never do that unless i really have to. Wrestling that hose makes me look like a jackass.

Mine now happily takes diesel from both sides, Sainsbury City Diesel does not seem to be so frothy so not so prone to give any blow back and with the fix I can now dispense fuel at full nozzle flow, where as prior to that you could only trickle the fuel and the pump would then time out as it took ages to even get a quarter of a tank in.

Just an update I managed to get a full tank no problem on Friday night I rammed the filler down the tube and everything was OK, but will try it again in a few days

Mine was just the same ... run the tank down to below 1/4 full and it was almost impossible to brim the tank at the pump - usually I gave up at about 3/4 full. Fill up at over 1/4 and no problem.

Interestingly, I've just had my tank replaced (see earlier post on "Rodent Damage") and I have had no problems brimming the tank. Dave at DSB said that the new tank is NOT the same design as the old one - clearly modified to solve the filling problem?

Is there a quick way of removing the plastic nozzle stopper from just inside the filling tube

That link you have posted is definitely the answer and is what my dealer did when I encountered filling problems from almost day one.

Thanks for the link, but it again begs the question, why do Skoda dealerships never seem to know about these problems and how to fix them?

Do you remove the nozzle gripper in the same way on the octy2

I have had this a couple of times when filling up at around 1/4 tank. I now run it until the refuel warning, and have no problems.

Would you not be in danger of lifting dirt from the bottom of the tank and clogging the fuel filter prematurely..

I no it's hard to do, but they say if you can at all, leave the car sitting for a few minutes after filling up, to allow dirt to settle to the bottom of the tank.

I try to run on never less than half a tank to avoid picking any crap that can often be found at the bottom end of the tank.

Glad I stumbled on this thread...

I thought I'd imagined that it sometimes takes an age to fill up,

i wondered whether it was the car or the filling stations?

Looks like it might be the car then...

I know this is an old thread, but I'm still having trouble filling the diesel tank right up on my 07 1.9TDi Elegance. It takes ages of just squeezing the trigger slightly to give a slow flow rate. Today the pump power went off before my tank was full because of a timer cut out according to cashier and I had to go in and pay then carry on. The link on page 1 of thread doesn't work any more, any ideas or fixes anyone?
