Cracked windscreen whilst fitting wipers

Featured Replies

Fitting them and whilst one was removed it sprung down and cracked it.:mad::mad::mad:

It is right at the bottom on the near side so out of drivers direct view.

It has to be smaller than 10mm to be in drivers view to pass mot and has to be smaller than 40mm in diametre out of drivers view.:thumbdwn:

I would say it is about 200mm but mot is in july so not urgent.

How much???

Would the AA cover it or would it affect my no claims if i got through insurance?

Sounds like its new screen mate. If you're fully comp on your insurance you should be able to get it done for a small(ish) excess. Probably be about £50. It won't affect your no claims bonus.

By the way is that a typo? or is it really 20 cm's long? I wouldn't drive around with a crack that big!

Any crack can weaken the pane by quite a bit, its worth checking out asap.

Most insurers it is between 50 and 75 quid excess, mine was 75 (just replaced it a week or so ago).

It has no impact on NCB.

If you decide to wait for a bit, then at the very least do a basic repair right now, but tbh I'd get it done.

I left mine for ages as the car was getting a Lummox conversion ;) so it made sense to do the windscreen at the end :D

What if ii've only got thridparty:(

Looks like you'll be paying for it yourself then unless you paid extra on your premium to cover the windscreen.

Don't forget that the screen is an integral part of the strength of the bodyshell and so as it is cracked the shell will be less stiff than it should be. The crack will get bigger too.

1) Drop Trousers.

2) Bend over.

3) Grasp Ankles.

But seriously, I know of someone who got a screen fitted for £170, Shop around and try the small guy's aswell as AG & AW

While it doesn't affect your no claims it does register on your policy as a claim.

That coupled with the dancing pocoyo avatar makes your post rather creepy.

Hope it doesn't cost you too much :(

It registers as a claim, but I've never known it to make any difference at renewal time, i.e. no more then their usual sh*te where the company gives you a crap quote, you tell them to stick it or reduce it, and they bring it back to where it was the previous year at least.

I done the same with my Fabia once - the noise was horrible but fortunately nothing broke.

On the subject of windscreens, the other half took her Corsa to Autoglass today to get a tiny chip repaired. £10!! I thought it was supposed to be free! Anyway...Some spotty kid who was doing the job come back with a stupid smirk on his face and told her the bad news...They'd somehow managed to bugger the whole windscreen in the process of repairing a chip! Now she's expected to pay a £60 excess to get it replaced. Non-amused!

I'm sure you are right but I just don't trust insurance companies. That said Brentacre have always seen me alright.

Before autoglass did my chip repair the guy explained before he started that the repairing process can often break the glass due to them having to squeeze the resin into the hole to fill the crack/chip. Showed me how it all worked with the tools and stuff was a decent guy. luckily mine didn't break. Most the process seemed automated and the gap for human error quite small

I had Mine done a Hyundai Coupe.... Took the RAC 5 visits and 3 screens to get it right.... if you are 3rd party then it will be anything between £150-£650. A screen for my hyundai was £500 alone.

Got a quote of £175 not going to do it yet tho.

  • 3 months later...

I've done exactly the same thing last night on my fabia. Gutted!

I've just renewed my insurance, and went for the budget option, without windscreen replacement - it was only £25 cheaper! Not looking so cheap now.

Been quoted around £200, but just got a quote from a local firm for £130, cant iamgine I'll do any better than that.

I would be happy with that I havn't got it done yet I thought I'd wait for my MOT in July.

You just be careful on them there bends then lad.. Last thing you wanna be doing is rolling it with no screen strength.

I've heard stories of cracks like that causing screens to shatter when passing over pot holes to, but having grown up in Notts I know they tend to be quite good on road care.. (better than Hillingdon by a mile.. god Eastcote is shocking). TBH, I'd get it done mate. It's only 5 nights worth of stating in.

Just had a look and it expires tomorrow.

Thought it was July for some reason.

What do I need to do for the MOT do I need to put the original air filter back on or engine cover?

I've not got the boot cover on as I have to keep fixing the rear wiper?

None of those will affect your MOT mate.

As for your screen shattering when going over a pot hole - that's unlikely, and even if it did happen it's laminated so it's not like you'd get showered with big chunks of glass!

Sweet.

Yeah, but is it really a 200m crack? And why were you waiting for the MOT to fail before getting a new windscreen? Bizarre!

Jesus man, just get it repaired. If the whole thing goes when you're out and about think of the cost of getting it towed, or emergency repaired? It'll be alot more than £175 :rotz:

Never mind the fact that it'll increase the risk of a crash, which could then screw someone else's day up. You need to get it done anyway, so just get it done… NOW!!!

I'm not going to get it done after it's failed.

I'll get it done before.

And it's more like 30cm now.

I'm not really worried about it smashing I've been driving around over huge potholes and nothing has happend.

Good luck
