RS Re - Mapping

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I have now been a proud owner of a gleaming red RS since the 8th April, and I am very satisfied. Its a 2002 on a 51 plate with 20000 miles on it.

My local Skoda dealer has been telling has been telling me about re-mapping the ECU & increasing the BHP to 230.

I am very tempted, but how fast "CAN A SKIP GO".

So even though I own a Skoda, I still love the jokes, and it keeps the work colleages happy.

So my question, has anyone chipped there RS, comments please.

My real name is Pete and I am in Preston, Lancashire.

There are plenty of people who have! Unfortunately I don't own one, but you'll get plenty of response to this, believe me! :D

Try here as a start, Pete.

Welcome to Briskoda!

Pete,

if after reading the various "chipping" threads you decide you want to spice up your Octy a few of us are going to have our RS' remapped at Jabbasport around August/ end of July (depending of personal circumstances and Jabba's appointment book).

For a minimum of 5 cars they'll give us a 10% discount (approx

Pete,

Hi, yes you can, I think the prefered route at present is JabbaSport for a remap.

As to what 230bhp feels like in a Skoda....alot better than you expect.

Although there are alot of factors influencing your choice. There are other options, which we can discuss.

I note your in Preston, I would really suggest having a passenger at a minimum before committing to a remap/chip. Although the passenger ride will not be the same as your drive it will give you an idea of what could be achieved.

We have a weekly meet each Thursday (Jn6 M61) where a few Octavia's appear, some none standard. There are also of course the larger Natinal meets with a greater selection of stock and modified vehicles to question and ponder over.

Other than that I know what the Jabba and APR systems perform like. But as I drive the 4x4, will allow the vRS lads to confirm the pro's and cons.

Yes, mine has had some minor fetteling, its now reasonably brisk ;)

Well worth doing in my opinion. I would say try before you buy. Several of the chip people will allow you to do this, either by timebombing the code or by letting you have a refund if you're not happy after 7 days. Some offer a warranty just in case a dealer get arsey.

You must feel comfortable with your tuner is the other piece of advice.

I'm happy with the effects of my ECU-tweaking as well. The engine, gearbox etc seem to be well-suited to it unless you go past sensible limits.

The search facility on here is pretty good as there's been a lot of discussion about the various options, pros and cons.

To be honest, the only 'con' is the 'what will the dealer say in the unlikely event that my engine self-destructs' but it sounds like you have a friendly dealer ?!

:drive:

welcome on board.....

We're meeting tonight as always, a few scoobs, a few skodas, and an Evo, spirited (but not insane..well..ish!) drive through the country and then drinks etc.

Feel free to come along, PM me for details, meeting at 8 nr J6 M61.

Two other newbies joining us tonight also so it will save on sacrificial virgins if you can make it.

Afternoon All,

Took my car into the main dealer for a small amount of warranty work today & was given the keys to their demonstrator vRS, with a smile & a wink they said "Compare it to your's!"

They have had the demo car Re-Mapped by Revo to approx 215bhp & are considering offering it as a dealer upgrade. The Service Manager is taking the opinion that the warranty will not be affected as the engine is good for the mods. They connected their dignostics to it & can find NO TRACE of any mods. The good thing with the Revo is the switchability of the system (as an option) aswell as the extra Immobiliser upgrade.

So I spent the morning with a Fixed Big Grin in a car that feels like it should be like this from the Factory.

The mid range torque is outstanding.

Looks like I will be raiding my sons Piggy Bank !!

Yes it should go without saying any test or try will likley end up costing you, so budget now and research well :)

One of those situations :D Interesting REVO commentary...

Do you have any agents in the North East/Edinburgh area?

Ahhhh, i'm glad to hear some independant feedback on the Revo system, cos i am soooooo tempted by it. I like the "invisibility" aspect as my car is brand new, and i don't want to screw up the warranty. Also the switchable option is very appealing too, as i wont need to worry when it goes for service, and i can switch the beast back on when i leave the dealers :D

Think i might spend some cash this summer, once the RS has a few more miles on the clock. :drive:

What sort of price is the REVO chip?

Rob,

Its not a chip as such, they re-program your ECU via the diagnostic port i believe.

Somewhere in the region of

It does seem very expensive, when you consider the rolling road time and the custom nature of the job you get at, say, Jabbasport. Also, switchability might not be an issue if you have an understanding service manager...

True, but theres a difference between them being understanding when all is running OK, and a few months later when your engine goes bang and they have a nice, convenient chip to blame.....even if the chip didnt cause it.

Also, the salesman mentioned a few customers had chipped their RS's when i bought mine, so i hit him with the warranty question, he was non-commital, to put it mildly

If you think that any rechip/remap is invisible to a Skoda diagnostic tool you are all dreaming.

Kev, I have already had a chat with James at JBS Chesterfield (They fitted the software to the Demo car for the Main Dealer).

Just got to decide which one to go with.

P.S.

James cannot believe the level of interest he has seen already !!

According to the Service Manager at my dealership the Revo remap IS invisible to the diagnostic tools that the dealers have.

He went on to say that only the Factory Engineers with the more in-depth equipment could spot a re-map.

The optional SPS controller when switched to standard mode actually removes the performance enhancing elements to the software & reloads the original parameters leaving no trace of the Re-Map.

The Main Dealer spent several hours with the diagnostics (VAGCOM 51?) & could find no trace of the Re-Map. That is why they are considering offering it as a dealer option for new cars.

Having driven the car, I would seriously recommend the 5 hour free test !

The chip in the ECU AFAIK is a flash EPROM. It can have a program uploaded to it under the right conditions. If you have the right tool (not necessarily the VAGCOM) you could download the contents and compare the maps with the standard ones for the car, which would tell you if it had been remapped. I'm not aware that a) the ECU supports the writing of new data with the chip in situ (other remappers certainly do it with the chip removed) or B) can support multiple programs in itself. If the multiple programs are achieved by the use of an external control unit then that is obviously an item that the dealer could also spot if they knew where to look. RevoKev - care to expand?

The external switch (serial port switch) isn't fixed to the car, it plugs into your OBDII/Diagnostic port and allows you to switch between stock and performance modes and also (with SPS 3) changes boost and timing settings. Once set (5 second time period) you pull it out of the port and hide it away in your pocket!

So there is no switch in the car for a dealer to find.

Kev, have you done any RSs yet? What figures are they really getting?

Hi Pete,

I noticed your from Preston, I live in chorley..

Where's the dealers in prestons?... as the garage I went to was in Bury near my Girlfriends

and gathering from your post they are pretty flexable with remapps etc?

Cheers

John
