Brake dust

Featured Replies

I washed my car last night

That my dear fella is normal for these motors .. .

Shocking, I know.

can anyone recomend some better working/less dusty pads???

Can I recommened Chrome or Metal Polish for the wheels. Makes it harder for the dust to stick and means the brake dust just washes off with soapy water-no harsh abrasives. :D

so i need to wash my alloys daily! And i though buying a black car was going to be the nightmare!!! shock horror!

Or get them painted anthracite.

I went the other way and bought pads which make MORE dust. But I just wash 'em once a week and for the rest of the time they're just mucky. Thankfully my wheels aren't naturally "shiney" so the dust takes a small while to become apparent. ;)

hmph!

i have found that after a bit of mileage the brake dust doesn't appear as much as when the car was new unless its me not using my brakes as much and realising the car can hold the corners at the higher speeds

Brake dust building up after 3 miles? That seems a bit mad to me. I clean mine every 2 or 3 weeks and I normally do drive hard.

mine were really bad to start with, i think as the brakes bed in they must be giving off loads of soot... now at 1700 miles it has started to calm down... so it might get better!

IIRC the VAG group use Pagid to develop their oem pads.. and they are well known for being dusty... they will calm down when they have bedded in properly tho :)

Auto glym do a alloy seal ...spray it on after they have been cleaned and dried...spray on wait till dry ...job done....got 2500 miles on my octy vrs and wheels staying a hell of a lot cleaner

should really read my posts properly before submitting

I use Tutle Wax Brake Dust Barrier, comes in a silver spray bottle and is available from Halfords

I'd get an air hose - and clear off the dust that way..

never put 'soapy water' - i.e. washing up liquid anywhere near your car..

the acids in the soap strip off the protective layers on anything - especially bodywork and dull the finish. I wouldn't even put it on alloys quite frankly.

Best idea i've had for alloys is to coat alloys in black amorite.. protects against rust and corrosion for several years, helps protect against the odd scratch and also you can't see any dust because its' black!!! Sounds silly, but there we go..

Regards,

Washing up liquid de-greases everything :thumbdwn:

Car shampoo doesn't

Surely though the washing up liquid wouldn't be as severe as some of the alloy wheel cleaners on the market. I always use washing up liquid on just the alloys to get the heavy stuff off followed by rinse and another quick wash with car shampoo.

Is it really that bad.

I know the paint has started to come off my wheels but thats down to the cowboy who re-sprayed them

Washing-Up liquid is also full of salt.

I wouldnt let it anywhere near a car of mine :)

Too bl00dy right!! Never use washing up liquid on anypart of your car, it's just asking for trouble :thumbdwn:

Some of the alloy wheel cleaners are mega harsh, if there's a slight crack or scratch on them then it'll eat your wheel away over time. My mate had some Wonder Wheels alloy cleaner and used them on his Scooby, admittedly they did come up super shiney, so he put some on his calliper to get them clean... Whoops, didn't do the other three as it ate away the laquer or whatever was coated on them and it left it tatty looking and grey instead of black with white text. After repeated use on his wheels they started to show signs of misuse due to the cleaner stuff.

Due to knowing this and seeing what state his wheels were left in I only ever use car shampoo on them very sparingly after a good dose of hose action, then as mentioned before the brake dust barrier stuff

Diamond :D

Hicksy

Uhm, Multiclean 2 anyone? (MC2). Ultra efficient but balanced and not abrasive in anyway. Ideal multipurpose cleaner too for smwbo to do kitchen floor, etc.

PM "waxwizard" or do a search. I find it very good to clean my alloys
