Grr what next?!? Rant warning!!

Featured Replies

 ... this is getting a joke now! I'm coming very close to losing all the love for my Vrs ... i've had the car just over a year now & so far its been :

- the door seals leaking (all 4 from what i can make out)

- the fuel cap has stopped shutting

- both the clutch & throttle metal pedals have fallen off! (the throttle almost causing a

head on crash, it slipped off & got stuck under the pedal causing the car to stall, leaving me stranded in the oncoming lane i was turning across  !! The oncoming car skidded to a stop ... the guy started shouting & calling me a bad man ;) etc ... all i could do was pick the pedal up off the floor, wave it at him & say sorry...

- 4 headlight bulbs & 2 wiper fuses

- the heater has stopped working ... this is the only one i've searched for in the Briskoda forum & couldn't find anyone with the same problem... people seem to have problem with constant hot air & no cold but i can't get ANY hot, no matter how long the cars been running or where the switchs are!

I don't mean to rant & sound like i hate the car because i don't, but its proving very hard to life with atm, the constant smell of damp is the worst. I don't think i'm hard on the car, i don't thrash it from cold, i take it easy near the end of the journey to help the turbo... i want this car to last & turn it into something naughty but most of the pennies atm are being spent fixing broken things! Argh!

This is the worst car i've ever owned in terms of things breaking but in terms of driving & smiles/mpg its easily the best!

- Peugeot 205 1.1 ( 12 months - nothing broke )

- Citreon Xantia 1.6 ( 6 months - fog light fell out )

- Renault Megane Coupe 2.0 ( 18 months - one drive shaft)

- Rover 75 2.0 diesel ( 11months - fuel pump @ 127k )

...so as you can see the Skoda didn't have much to beat but its failing overall .. i miss the £350 205 Lol!

the only real problem i can see is the heater not working... rest seem nice and easy fixes??

I had leaking doors too - think it is a no cost extra :) The heater thing sounds odd. I drive a variety of thrashed Astra diesels at work which quite like to loose coolant at the wrong moment. A sure sign of this is when no heat comes through the vents (and also very reluctant to rev). i know this is a different model but maybe worth a look at the coolant level?

With all these problems you've had with you car would you still have another Skoda?

my Ford is coming up for 10 years old now and in the 6 years I've had it the only proper problem has been a dodgy VSS. and although slower, it's a nicer drive than the Ibiza

:)

I had a heater problem similar to the one you describe with my old Corsa - it was a switch that was causing the problem - it was a quick and easy repair as far as I remember and cost me next to nothing. Might be worth checking. Door seals are notorious for going - get them sorted and cure the damp smell.

Heater may be coolant level as someone mentioned, may also need system bleeding.

Door seals leaking - yup, common.

Do a search and someone has done a 'tutorial' on how to do this yourself.

You've been unlucky with this car it seems.

The fuel cap is easy to fix, 10 seconds.

I have been more unlucky, in a year and a half I've had:

Cooling system pump

Cooling system piping (6 months later)

Power steering pump

Temp sensor

Door closed sensor (dunno what it is)

two fog lights one main bulb

All at separate times.

Gosh you're really unlucky. I wonder if there was a period when demand for the Vrs allowed assembly standards to drop? 1.4TDI 113K 04 reg nothing has broken (touches wooden head) 1.9 SDI 82K W reg front spring and stuck electric window.

Hope you get sorted and have a long happy life together.

:mad:Grr what next?!?

Probably the front arb or console bushes.......

I have to admit, i love my car, but, it has cost me around a thousand pounds in maintainance in the last year (hoping this year will be cheap) where as, my old heap of a honda civic (92) barely cost me a penny to maintain in the 3 years i had it! i never even had it serviced or even needed to top up the oil in that time! only thing that broke was the radiator and that was a doddle to whip out and replace. However, i still wouldn't swap back! i enjoy the furby too much.

ive sealed my OSR door carrier twice now and its still leaking, had to do my NSR twice but thats now dry as a bone :)

hoping for a dry weekend so i can do the OSR again

With someone mentioning Honda Civic, I'd thought that I'd just share a neighbour's experience of that marque, her car approx 2004 DTI Civic, loses power it seems, local, "well thought of" Honda main dealer sorts it regularly and hits her for £300>£400 and still it ends up "loses power". This not what I'd expect from Honda as she is the correct "profile" of a Honda owner (older person!) - so it seems that you just can't avoid this kind of problem, you're either lucky or not lucky!

I had the heater problem (either cold or hot but nothing in between). The dealer replaced some sort of motor in the heating system that controls the position of some flaps in the heater ducts (I think!)

I too have had a load of things wrong with my furby (I've had it 2 years)

-leaky doors

-knackered EGR

-Loose front ARB

-Bonnet and boot badges have gone all corroded

-broken front air vents

-broken heater

Yeah, your heater problem sounds like the hot/cold flap's either stuck or it's motor is kaput.

The circulation system in the Fabia is all motorised with flaps directing the air.. they are known to get stuck and fail so could be this with yours? I Think Devontopia (Jason) Had his re-circulate flap motor go and the system got stuck in re-circulate.

not completely sure, but think if you get hold of someone with a VAGCOM there's a Re-Initialize procedure that can bring it all back to life. Or at least tell you if the motors gone.

My doors leaked, Sealed the rears and they've stopped leaking but my drivers doors got a leak too.. still got my sealent loaded in it's gun though ;)

To answer what's next, prepare yourself for the following lol:)

- rear wiper washer jet rotating with the wiper

- aircon needing regasing

- heater hot hot cold cold syndrome

- bushes

- boost pipes between intercooler and EGR valve needing to be replaced

- the electric mirror switch operating both mirrors at the same time when on one setting

- window carrier breaking

- and possibly a wheel bearing

I love my vrs:)

- the electric mirror switch operating both mirrors at the same time when on one setting

That's intentional, aint' it?

My elegance was even marked up for this operation, I did notice the vRS has a separate L & R setting though... but still just works like the Elegance did (both move when set to right side mirror).. maybe the switch went on mine and was replaced with the wrong one then, before I bought it?

to the OP... come on, it is worth it ;)

Poor fella, His VRS was probably abused by a former owner. Fix your little problems mate and you'll love the VRS again.

Wow thats for all the replies! .... what with writing down all my other problems i've had, i forgot to mention i've had some others that have now been mentioned above Lol!

- the rear wiper sometimes doesn't move at all, on the wiper setting or the washer setting... and actually the washer jet hasn't worked for sometime... I know its an easy fix but ARGH i'm fed up with tinkering with a 5 year old 'quality VAG' product:thumbdwn: ... my idea of tinkering is de-badging- (done) painting headlights- (doing hopefully one weekend soon) etc...

- the bushes have started squeaking so i'm trying to hold out long enough to replace them when i can afford some lowering springs

i've checked the coolant and it seems fine so i'm guessing .... me flaps need looking at

Thanks for all the advice guys... if your in West Yorkshire & see a black Vrs with a private plate ending in 565 give us a wave!! I've never been in the Vrs when i see another, i'm normally in the works van so waving would be weird and random....

As for the previous question of would i buy another Skoda ... Mmm i'm not sure, i want to see how the new Superb holds up .. if not i'm off to Japan to pick up a white Toyota Will!! Yeah!!

- door mirror kicked off and currently hanging on with tape

- drivers door leaking after being sealed

- DMF knocking

- knocking noise going around corners sounds like cv joint

- rarb needs replacing as its rusty but got another one here

might sell it soon and get a zetec s tdci and leave it standard

Donkey. Forget debadging and painting insignificant bits just fix all yer little problems first. Briskoda wont tolerate a substandard VRS on the road, will we.

I can sympathise with the original poster. I had a 12 year old Hyundai Accent, the only real (non consumable) problems I had were the engine coolant temperature sensor (twice), front wheel bearings at 100k, rusted brake pipes, rear trailing arm and a front suspension lower control arm (rusted through where the drop link was affixed).

I've had my Furby for 18 months/6,000 carefully driven miles and so far it has cost virtually the same amount in repairs as I paid for it:

Starter motor

Water pump

Both front wheel bearings gone independently at less than 38000 miles.

ARB/droplinks/console bushes front, bump stops rear.

Throttle body clean and alignment three times.

Electric mirror control switch broke off in my hand.

Heater matrix.

I'm sure there is other stuff I've forgotten.

It has certainly put me off ever buying a VAG car again (or any other non-premium European car for that matter as the French cars are well known for being unreliable too).
