Maxi-Dot Speedo....Can I Change it?

Featured Replies

I have a Petrol VRS LE which to my suprise dosnt have a speedo with MPH and KMH on it, instead the speedo has MPH and the Maxi-Dot displays KMH.

When driving at 70+ the edge if the steering wheel is right in the way of being able to glance at the normal speedo, however i can see the maxi dot displaying KMH perfectly.

Is it possible to change the maxi-dot display to display MPH, so i can quickly glance at it when driving?

Thanks in advance

Dan

I dont think you can, however its easy to convert quickly between km/h and mph. As a rule of thumb,

30mph = 50km/h

40mph = 65km/h

60mph = 100km/h

70mph = 110kmh

80mph = 130km/h

Doing lots of driving in europe as I do, you soon get know what speed equates to what.

:confused:

Two solutions

  1. Only drive in UK, so 'driving at 70+' will never arise! :thumbup:
  2. Have a good yank on the steering wheel reach/rake adjust handle and drop your steering wheel a smidgeon ... I initially had the same problem with the wheel obstructing my DSG 'which gear am I in' readout on Maxidot.

However, I'm sure I've read on here that you can change to MPH on Maxidot - you just need to press the right combo of buttons on the climatronic, and I think 19 comes into it somewhere :confused:

IIRC pressing econ and auto at once switches between F and C degrees, so there must be something similar for the maxidot, either direct or through vag com.

The newer instrumentcluster will show the speed (same speed as the speedo indicates) digitally.

There should be a possibility in the setup of the maxidotmenu to change the units (from km/h to mph).

Try this first.

...sorry, but does your Maxi Dot display actual speed as I saw on a friend's of mine latest A3?

Is it possible to anyway tweak Maxi Dot?

I thought there would be an option in the Maxi-Dot menu, but i certainly cannot find one.

Read the manual ,

I'm 90% sure that there is an option to change the display from KM/H to MP/H

You have to go via the menu function on the Maxidot - remember not to do this whilst on the move or the car will tell you off!!:thumbup:

I knew I'd seen it somewhere ....

Dual zone Climatronic settings

Like the previous version there are a ton of settings and information hidden in the climatronic computer.

To get this, press the ECON and the top right air direction button (next to recirc) simultaneously. To get back to temperature control press AUTO and ECON simultaneously

The passenger side temp control dial sets the section (1-30)

The fan speed dial sets the subsection and is shown in the passenger side LCD screen to the right of the main number.

The one that everyone wants is true speed, whis can be found in section 19.

Subsection 0 shows Kmh, subsection 1 shows Mph.

Subsection 3 shows the revs to the nearest 100 (tickover is about 870rpm and shows up as 08 on the display)

And I was right ... there was a19 in it somewhere!

The above pasted from the Octavia Tricks section, so not my original work. I have to assume it works 'cos it's been there a long time and no-one seems to have argued with it! :thumbup:

Edit: OK, just been out to the car and tried it and, yes, it does work, but not quite in the way I was expecting.

I was somehow expecting that the speed readout would be displayed on the Maxidot, but it is displayed on the driver's side temperature indicator on the climatronic.

A couple of comments:

i) Where the text above says: 'To get back to temp control ...' this means effectively: 'If you no longer want to see the true speed indicated'. I had thought that you needed to 'go back' in order to save your changes, but you don't - just follow the instructions and the driver side temperature display will immediately start showing speed.

ii) When you turn off the ignition the Climatronic defaults back to normal temp display, but, if you hold down the two buttons again, you're straight back to road speed indication ie you don't have to redial in the 19 and 1, which you will immediately see re-displayed in the passenger side temperature display

iii) The road speed indicated this way is somewhat lower than the speedo indicates. Eg it was showing 47 when the speedo was showing 50. I'm assuming therefore that the climatronic display is the accurate reading since speedos tend to err on the high rather than the low side. But where is the climatronic getting its info from?

One of the earlier posters is right. You can change the settings in Maxidot. I think it's in comfort settings or somewhere like that. I thought the speedo display was quite good displaying both mph and kmh though tbh.

To alter the setup settings, it is important to do this at standstill and the motor off.

Close the door, put on your seatbelt and turn on the ignition. Now you should be able to find the setup menu.

The speed in the climatronic (only the older ones, not the newer climatronic) is the CAN-speed. This is the corrected speed measured by the ABS sensors. It will not have the x% difference that the speedo has, but is in no way a GPS speed. Because it is measured by the wheel sensors it also has differences when the tires are different or worn.

IIRC (I'll tell you when my new Octy arrives in a couple of weeks!), you can't change the digital kph display easily on a UK car. There's probably a way to change it in VAG-COM, but you'd possibly be as much on the wrong side of the law as you would be when driving at the + side of 70+:

Regulation 35(1) Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986

Every motor vehicle shall be fitted with a speedometer which, if the vehicle is first used on or after 1st April 1984, shall be capable of indicating speed in both miles per hour and kilometres per hour, either simultaneously or, by the operation of a switch, separately, unless exempted by paragraphs (2) and (3) of this regulation.

Does anyone else think that the kmh display on the new dashboards is a little bit of an afterthought? Seems a bit odd to do it in the way that they have.

Hmm, dunno, I have to admit I quite like it. Only just realised the speedo is graduated in 10MPH increments 0-80 and 20MPH increments 80-160 though, so I'm hardly the worlds most observant person...

I like it 'cos it's cool. But I don't understand why it's like that!

Ive just got a new facelifted Octavia and as far as I can see (hunted through every menu I can find) its not possible to alter it to MPH.

My understanding is that EU rules say that all cars sold in the EU must have a means of showing both MPH and KPH.

As its no longer on the speedo dial (why not I cant imagine) this is the way of doing it.

As I drive a lot in France I actually quit like it. Its a lot easier to see than trying to read the small print on the speedo.

So is it possible to have a speedo reading on EVERY car that has maxidot then? Mine's a '58 plate with Maxidot and i'd like to see what it looks like: i'd just like to know how to get it on the display if it IS possble?

Its not possible to display the speed on the pre facelift maxidot cluster, only the new ones.

Audi have been doing the display like this for a number of years, so its not an afterthougt.

I've never seen an Audi that only has MPH on the clock with a permanent KPH in the display?

With the old Maxidot it is possible, but you will need the Kufatec E-MFA for this. It indicates the CAN-Speed (same as on the climatronic).

it is something on some of the vw work vans, so i did wonder if the skoda maxidot could be programmed with vag com, certainly would be a nice little feature.

hmm my passat shows the speed on the clock in mph and digital readout of KPH at the bottom, would be nice to have both set to mph :) fiddle time me thinks

Hallo magic,

do you figure out why the kit shouldn't be compatible with factory bluetoooth kit, as stated on kufatec site? They also state it works only on red figures computer and ours and yours is white, of course...

If it is only a matter of connectors, or electrical issue, or limit of devices connected to BUS (this the worst option...).

Hi Genoa

The EMFA takes the place of the factory bluetooth kit in the maxidot. Instead of phone there is the EMFA listed and you can choose it.

If a factory BT kit is already installed, it won't work. Only way to combine is to buy there Fiscon BT kit and replace the works kit. This will give you a parrot BT kit AND the extra information of the EMFA.

The Maxidot only has a limited number of devices and the EMFA will take the place of the BT kit.

The Fiscon BT kit has the possibility to switch to the extra EMFA information.

The EMFA only reads the available information on the CAN-BUS and will not interfere with anything on the BUS. It is simply connected to the CAN high and CAN low with a prewired connector supplied by the EMFA kit.

All I had to do is take out the RNS and put the extra connectors (male and female) between the existing connectors.

Only problem is the limited space behind the radio in the octavia. Had to modify the plastic rail (that holds the radio) left from the radio. Just cut a larger hole in it, to stow away the extra connectors.

It works on all cars with the maxidot. In the Golf there might be a difference in color between normal (mini)dot and maxidot.

On certain engines with certain engine firmware it also shows boostpressure (AFAIK on the 140HP diesel and the first (before update) 1.8 TSI. After the latest updates on the 1.8 TSIs the boostpressure isnt indicated anymore). A pity it doesnt on the TFSI/TSI/TDI VRS. Therefor I have the voltage on the lower left. On the lower right you can choose between RPMs and what is left in the tank in liters (or gallons).

Too bad I didn't know Kufatec before paying for the OEM bluetooth kit...
