Best acceleration? Launch in 1st or 2nd?

Featured Replies

Hi all

So, picked up my vRS on Friday and I am absolutely loving it! It's a red 04 with 44K and full history, cambelt done etc. Best purchase I've made since my VR6 Corrado - (which I still have for the V6 burble` by the way :)).

Anyway - I was wondering if ultimately you can get better standing start acceleration from starting in second. I remember Autocar stating their test diesel Passat was just 0.1 sec slower starting in second - so I wonder how the vRS might do?

Anyone have any thoughts on this - and is it likely to do any damage?

Cheers . .

First if you like your clutch, but off the line is not where the Fabia shows its stuff.

Despite my power, I still get the best acceleration starting in 1st, with a damn quick shortshift into 2nd. My gearbox/clutch setup helps for shortshifting though.

I agree Simon..

3rd 4th 5th and 6th...... When on the move is when the Fabia vRS shows its stuff :D

Thanks for the input - I like my clutch - so I will stick to 1st gear starts - (but probably still get a nice gentle little remap)!! Being in East Sussex - looks like Angeltuning are on my doorstep . . .

Angel Tuning get a  from me.

Definitley have to use 1st gear, clutch and DMF will have a short life otherwise, a quick blip with the throttle then into 2nd. where it shows it's stuff, so to speak.

as above, the Fabia isnt an off the line kinda car

i get the best by launching in second, jason would too but hes just not prepared to treat his car in the animal way needed to get a fast 2nd gear launch:rotz:

Kinda dangerous to do any kind of fast launch at the lights if there's a powerful petrol right behind you - the sudden slowdown while changing up catches them unawares...

...as will the smokescreen! ;)

Your to slow at changing gear! ;)

(just joshing bud)

I'm pretty certain that a really aggrssive start in 2nd will be quickest.

De shifty man swears by 2nd gear launches, and has the timeslips to prove it, but it's hell on the clutch.

I'd love to swap out the first gear cog for summat a tad higher tbh. It's geared all wrong for even the standard engine....

My ears were burning....

Yup 2nd gear can be up to 0.5 second quicker to 60, and certainly feels better and limits wheelspin, so you also get more traction. I did have a sach sintered clutch though. The standard one starts to smell of burning if you do that too often.

3.5k on the rev counter, biting point on the clutch, then feed the clutch in - niether suddenly or too gently.
