Whats with these silly mirrors then?

Featured Replies

Ok, I just noticed that my Fab VRS electric mirrors dont behave as i'd expect them and wondered why nobody else has mentioned it on here.

I'd expect that if you set the knob to left you can adjust the left mirror and set it to right to adjust the right mirror, but NOOOOOO, left adjusts fine but when you have it on right it adjusts BOTH, anyone care to let me know what this totally idiotic idea is all about or am i missing something obvious.

It would make far more sense to me to have left as left and right as right and have the middle position do both!

It is that way for good reason - but I'm b******d if I can remember what it is! And I too find it really annoying.

You set the right mirror first, then adjust the left.

The idea is if your partner or another driver then gets in the car who is shorter/taller than you they can adjust both mirros at the same time to suit thier driving position as if you move the mirror side to side it move the other in the opposite direction.

The middle position is for heated operation, best not to leave it on that or youll burn out the mirror glasses.

Its in your handbook!

This should be sticky too

It's quite simple really. If you share a car with someone else, once you've moved the seat, steering wheel etc the mirrors move together to make adjustment more simple. Why fiddle with both mirrors when one setting adjusts both together?

that was one of the things that kenny w reminded me of when i bought his vrs octy.right first then left, and leave in left or right position, but doesn't the heated bit only work when the rear heater is on ross???

I don't have the problem of other people using my car and fiddling with things. :D

I think the heated mirrors are on whenever the switch is in that position.

Tend to flick them on to test them on PDi/Service.

my dealer said the heated mirrors only come on with the rear heated screen! I leave mine in the middle so I dont knock it and change the position.

Time to read the hand book again!

The heated mirrors only stay on for 10 minutes (just like the rear window) so that you don't have them on for hours on end.

I never even realised this happened with the mirrors. But then I havent moved them since I first set them up.

I leave my button in the middle too. Dont remember seeing anything to say otherwise.

i hate heated mirrors -i left the dial in the middle position and they melted off me stick on 'paddy hopkirk' wide angle view mirrors - looked a right sad get with them things hanging off in the middle of newcastle traffic -lots of pointing etc :(

With the octy its a different ball game. The mirror adjustment is the same, but the switch has a heated position, this heats the mirror independantly of the rear screen. When you press the heated rear window button, you heat both the mirrors and the rear screen no matter what position the switch for the mirrors is in. Also the heater will stay on as long as the button is pressed in as there is no timer.

Your not the only one. Must have a play at dinner.

Erm, seems like a few porkys are going around on here.. from either people or dealers - dunno where all this started but all what's being reported may be specific to vRS models..

the Electric/Heated mirror facts on a Fabia 1.9TDI Elegance (Hatch) 52 plate.

Left Position - alters left wing mirror.

Right Position - alters right wing mirror (definitely not both)

Centre Position - heats wing mirrors - and stays on always. does not get activated when rear window heater element is switched on. does not stay on for ten minutes and switches itself off either.

I had to use mine this morning in Oxfordshire - it was very foggy and lots of condensation everywhere. They are good for getting rid of it. My drive to work is 20-25 minutes and I would have noticed if they had switched themselves off - as they would have fogged up again, air was that dense with moisture.

Regards,

2001 Octavia vRS

Left position alters just the left mirror.

Right position alters both.

Centre position does bugger all.

Mirror demist only works when the rear screen is on and you have to turn both off when it's demisted.

That's what happens on my car anyway.

It doesn't make sense for the mirrors to stay permanently heated for economy reasons, the current it drams although it's not a great deal is enough to alter fuel consumption quite a lot. In addition it would decrease to life of the heater element within the glass so unless they are after more money off you.........

That's my opinion anyway.

Well I can't see it being on for a while - switch itself off - then come back on and then off - and so on..

Regards,

53 furby timer is set for 20 mins for heated rear window ( according to book ).

Dont know about wing mirrors. with ref connection to rear window.

do know that

Rightt & left move together on top setting & left on its own for bottom setting. My 51 plate Octy did the same so knew what to expect.

Agree with some of the above that it is a pain, speshally if either of them get moved when the car has been washed.

My 2001 Elegance has L, L+R, and heated positions. Not convinced my heated mirrors are working, although I haven't tried them with the heated rear window on. I would prefer to have L, R, and heated positions but probably just because I had them separately on previous cars :D Rarely have to alter them so not really a problem.............

Havent they made minour changes since the Fab was new on a 52 plate?

As for the mirrors, it would seem to be a VW thing, that the nearside mirror is adjusted on its own, or in tandem with adjustment of the right..and every VW group car I have had/seen does it.

Personally I think its a cracking idea, take my Superb for example (or previous Octy if you want). I know how to set mirrors..full stop. My wife was never too good at it. I set the mirrors for me, and when she gets in the car and adjusts the seat for herself she then has to adjust the mirrors too. That is now easy because all she has to do is adjust the offside mirror to how she has it and presto both mirrors are adjusted correctly.

My Octy vRS mirrors are even more confusing...... up until recently, the mirrors worked logically (left position = left mirror only, right position = right mirror only). Then someone pranged my door. I got the damage repaired, and when I got the car back, the mirrors behaved differently (left position = left mirror only, right position = both mirrors). I can only assume that there are a few different ways of wiring the mirrors.... Weird

Had my Octy RS for 3 years and it was always L=L and R=R until Friday when my wife noticed that L=L and R=L+R. Picked my new one up on Saturday and mirrors operate L=L and R=R
