Cruise Control -

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I've got a quote for CC for my Octy, I just can't decide whether to go for it or not... I currently drive around 100 miles a day, almost entirely on motorway, I've tried the CC on my wife's car and like it, find I tend to drive slightly less erratically and find it nice in areas where there is a speed restricition etc. It's nice not to be monitoring my speed every 30 secs as I'm driving along...

The question is though, given I currently intend to keep the car for at least a few years: is it worth spending £195 on it?

Any pearls of wisdom from anyone to help me decide?!

Cheers,

Richard.

If you think you'll be able to use it a lot on your commute then I'd say it's definitely worth it.

But if your motorway commute is busy and the speeds driven are erratic then it might be a waste of money.

Sounds like you've given it some thought already though.

I wouldn't want to get a car without it now but motorways up here are considerable quieter.

Yes , well worth it.

I'd hate to be without it.

I've had it on several previous cars including both my Octy Mk 1 vRS and Octy Mk II Elegance.

Now that I've had it I would really not be happy without it, so soon after I got my current Fabia, I had cruise fitted by Lummox (Unit 18).

If you've never had it before then maybe you won't miss it as much - but beware - if you get used to it you probably won't want to be without it in the future!

Get it.......great toy!!

Got CC on last car. Found it gr8, esp for speed restriction areas. Top of shopping list for new car was CC. Dealer fitted it free as part of deal. Find it invaluable for most journeys. Set it to 69mph sit back and watch the traffic flow by.....

I'd say CC is one of the things a used buyer will look for...

In the end only you can answer the question if it's for you @ £195.

I say "Get it" - I never thought I would use it when I got my new car - ii use it daily on a 30 limit so I can watch the road and not my speed.

Yup.

I won't have another long distance car without it.

This is the bit that made me think twice actually after borrowing my wife's car with CC. I did find that I paid more attention to the road because I wasn't thinking about how fast I was going all the time!

Best thing I've ever had on a car. It's even more useful when I'm towing a trailer because the speed limit for towing is 80km/h but the car barely notices it's towing at all, so my speed would creep up very quickly...

I love being able to look out all the time while driving rather than constantly checking my speed - I wouldn't buy another car without cruise control (Unless I was planning on fitting it immediately on buying).

Would retrofitting cruise control affect insurance?

It might.

You should (in theory at least) inform your insurance company as it's a change to the vehicle and they may or may not want to charge you extra for this.

Agreed, always best to tell insurance companies about anything that deviates from standard.

They might see fit to charge more for CC because even though it doesn't affect performance, it would cost them more to provide you with a like-for-like replacement.

Does anyone have any figures as to how their fuel economy is affected using CC?

I've done some calculations, at my current mileage (25,000 pa) and fuel prices, if I get just 1mpg more, it would pay for itself in approx 4 years

Even if my mileage halved, it'd still go a long way towards paying for itself over the length of time I expect to have the car. And that's with just 1mpg improvement!

Just to clarify on upgrades:

They are anything that is upgraded, either by the dealer/manufacturer or from any other store/garage, needs to be declared. Upgrades are anything that is included (paid for or promotional) that deviates from the standard model, whatever level spec that it orginially is (classic, ambient, elegance, vRS, L&K).

I'm not sure it really improves fuel economy, but you arrive where you're driving to a lot less tired...

It's generally reckoned to help a bit re: economy, although it's debatable on roads such as those in the UK, especially Wales where even the M4 tends to have regular ascents/descents.

That said, I don't need much improvement for it to pay for itself at my current mileage. Even if it doesn't pay for itself, I'll probably still get it, but if I can convince myself that it *might* pay for itself... :D

That depends on how good/economical a driver you are , but plenty of people do see an improvement - it makes it much easier to stick to a consistent speed.

It's possible to "beat" the cruise for economical driving but that does take some effort.

My gut feel is that it does improve fuel economy a little mainly because you don't get the gradual unnoticed speed increase - you know the thing on the motorway:

"I'll just get past this one then I'll pull in" and you unconsciously squeeze the throttle a smidgin but that means you are now gaining on the next one and so on...

Big payback is the ease that you can comply with speed limits - average speed checks have been mentioned but another winner is where you are on a 60mph A road and the limit drops to 30 through a village - 30 seems sooooo slow after 60 and it is difficult to readjust cos the road is straight and flat and the guy behind is nudging you along and then just too late you spot PC Plod with his speed gun...

I never had one before this car and now I wonder how I ever lived without it.

Got it and its great. Set it at 30 in built up areas and forget about the speed. Allows you to concentrate on avoiding the massive potholes which will more than likely do more damage to your car than a measly £195. For this alone it is worth it!

Get it for this reason above and two others;-

1. keeping steady speed in any areas with a speed limit 40mph urban or more importantly Motorway roadworks with average speed cameras, and

2. Generally on the Motorway for comfort and allowing you to concentrate on other things.

Go get it!

I have just recently had it fitted to my octy, and I now wondered how I lived without it.

My local skoda dealer only charged me £160 though.

Andy

Get them to match Andy's dealer's £160 but do get it. I hate driving cars without it now and would certainly never buy another car without it. I use it it so much. As others have mentioned, it's great in average speed checks, around town keeping to the limit, on the motorway, even just on A-roads on relaxed drives. The Skoda implementation on the end of indicator stalk is so nice and comfortable to use too.

If it helsps with getting a price match, I got my done at Derek Slacks in Middlesbrough

a no brainer! cc is fabulous and is essential for anyone who spends time on the motorway (or autobahn over here!) - do it!
