Windows 7 Preorder

Featured Replies

You can grab the RTM iso off the net now, get it installed and use the 120 day grace period, entering your key when your pre-order arrives in October. I'm installing it tomorrow. I grabbed Windows 7 Retail Ultimate E English (x64) as I specifically didn't want IE.

But without IE, and no wizard, how are you meant to get online with an EU Win7 copy?

According to an article on the register you get a splash screen during install asking which browser you want, it then goes and gets it for you. I'm assuming this is done via Windows Update.

Cool... thought it must be something like that... although after installing Chrome on my mini laptop I really like it and may just use that now instead!

TR1 still going strong then Phil?

Oh yes... recently replaced the HDD though as that was on it's way out but stuck a 60GB one I got cheap off ebay!

Just done a clean wipe of everything and very nippy again now!

Excellent mate

Suppose if there's one thing that will go after a while, it's the only mechanical thing left :)

I ordered the home premium a couple of weeks ago from PCW online. Best £45 I've spent with MS in a long time :D

Where from out of interest assuming it's a "proper" source that doesn't require MSDN subscription?

isos all over rapidshare / usenet / torrents. I grabbed it from easynews. No harm done as I've already pre-ordered it so they're getting my money and I'm not using a stolen serial or crack, I'm just getting my hands on what I've ordered a little sooner. Been running it for a couple of days now, it's spot on. It's also available through technet from the 6th.

Oh by the way, if you grab the Ultimate or Home Premium "E" (European version) it doesn't have IE and it doesn't have the ability to add it via microsoft update as we thought it might. You have to have your web browser ready to install on a cdr / usb pen or whatever.

So has anyone tried Win7 with BootCamp yet?

So has anyone tried Win7 with BootCamp yet?

Yes, and in Fusion, not a straight boot camp install, I upgraded my Vista boot camp install to 7. Macbook Pro is going up for sale soon, I can do everything from one OS again then :)

Thats expensive compared to the original pre-order prices.

Also worth noting that MS have now ditched the "E" european version, and that means that we will now get the full blown version with IE. Also means that we will get upgrade versions, which previously we were not going to.

So does this mean that the people who pre-ordered windows 7 "e" they will now get an upgrade and not a full version - I dont like upgrades. Surley they cant do that when they have taken your money

You will be get the full fat version, in place of the "E" version.

So you can now upgrade from vista without a clean install????

Apparently yes you can.

Don't do that though.

Don't do that though.

Why not?

If you dont install loads of crap on your machine, then it doesnt NEED a clean install

If you don't install loads of crap on your machine it won't take you very long to re-install it after doing a clean install. QED. :D

LOL, But how the hell can I be expected to back up 180gb of music and a further 50gb of pics and documents before the install? Yes my laptop drive is huge.

Our resident drive guru scared me off external hard drives for storage

Besides, the only version I'd buy is Ultimate as I need to many of the bits the other versions lack. But I'm not paying silly money for it. I'll wait til the prices drop like Vista did.

Better to have your pics, docs and music on your laptop hard drive AND an external drive though. I just backed up ~ 120 gig from my laptop to an external disk, it didn't take that long.

True, but I was scared off a WD world book NAS drive

Now funds I would have used are needed for the forthcoming baby arrival.

I've got 160gig and 320gig (£60) WD passport 2.5" drives. I managed to acccidentally lob the 160 accross a car park 18 months ago whilst it was still spinning and it's been fine since so I rather like them.

I didn't notice Bitlocker was missing from Home Premium 7 until just now. That said, it's refusing to work with the TPM in my T500 Thinkpad anyway. Maybe I'll just stick to TrueCrypt.

I will be doing a clean install as for a start I'm going from 32bit Vista to 64bit Windows 7.

I just want a fresh install anyway as I haven't done it in a while. Not that it desperately needs it but would just be nice.

I have all my stuff backed up onto a 500gb external drive (about 250gb's worth) so no problem there.
