Hi,

I recently completed a 350 mile journey in my 02 fabia elegance, obviously i needed the horn several times. unfortunatly, the horn is dreadful. it is like a small dog having its tail trodden on.

now, being part of VAG, surely there is a compatible item from a larger vw/audi that will be easy enough to fit?! im not going for super-tanker loud, just imposing.

Any ideas?!

Why would you obviously need to use your horn several times in a 350 mile journey?

due to the terrible terrible driving by everyone around me!! that doesnt really help with the question in hand though.

I find quite often those with the horn are the ones who are actually in the wrong.

Same, have only evever used my horn three times. Twice it was people stepping off a pavement outside a school, and the other time was where someone started reversing into my (parked) car.

Granted, its not very loud, but it is noticeable, which is all the horn is meant to be.

I dont think your comment reflects my journey at all - infact, if i was in the wrong each time i used my horn, god help everyone else on the road.

To be fair the OP has a point.

The thread isn't about driving technique it's about fitting a better horn. You guys can be really up yourselves sometimes :rotz:

The standard single tone horn usually fitted is carp. The Nautilus is a good upgrade and they can be had for less the £20 if you look round

This happens all the time on Polos - the lower resonator fails...

Is the horn legal? Will it still pass an MOT with it on. Sure I read somewhere that some horns are illegal or is that just musical ones?

The Elegance dual horn anit' so bad when it's working (same as on vRS isn't it?).. I'd go scrappy raiding for a working replacement.. or even just buy a new one, can't be allot?

My uncle used to have a mk2 Escort van with an air horn that played the woody wood pecker laugh! Legend! Wish he still had it, that'd be straight under the vRS's bonnet!

The VRS horn is certainly pretty good.

I scrounged one from someone on here (might have been WW) for my girlfriend's Punto and it did the job nicely.

I always thought my VRS horn was OK, when I did need to use it in a very dangerous situation it did the job.

However, you can never have "too loud" The Halfords horn (or any for that matter) - are they easy for a layperson to fit?

Can anyone advise, what is or is not legal in the UK for a horn?

(Not that I would want to, but out of interest...) Can a musical horn be fitted in addition to the "normal" horn and would that be legal as long as you did not remove the standard one?

My fabia's horn used to be high pitched as well. An old lady pulled out in front of me a a few weeks ago, I had to brake hard and subconsciously pressed the horn forgetting how pants it sounded, and when a bystander laughed (I'm 99.9% sure he was laughing at my horn!) it tipped me over the edge to buy a new one. I got one from halfords for £12.99 and just got the garage to fit it when they did the MOT. It's a big improvement although it's not quite as loud as the original one.

Pretty sure one of my horns has failed as it sounds a bit like an ill duck! I used to have an awesome air horn on an old mini I had which used to pass its MOT no problem... until the floor rotted away.

BTW if you drive in London the horn is an essential piece of kit IMO!

It is illegal to have a musical horn on a car built after 1973(IIRC) but there is nothing to stop you fitting 1 as a secondary horn as long as you still have a main horn.....

is it illegal or an MOT fail to replace your original horn with an air horn? not a musical one, a double or triple tone one
