PD170: 6th gear: a wall at 4K rpm

Featured Replies

Hi friends,

any idea on what can cause the wall a keep hitting when arriving rather brisk in 6th and keeping flooring? It seems my octy now can't go beyond 4k rpm/ 220kph.

Some weeks ago a dull Volvo stopped abruptely in the middle of a square and I crashed octy nose on its bumper. I cured my bumper, but my grill is not so aerodynamically shaped now.

Air Filter has been cleaned some miles ago, but I bet it should be still fine. Car is on variable service. I might check tyres but I'm a bit skeptical.

Any idea?

TIA,

Thats about as far as youll get in 6th gear without adding a serious amount of power to overcome the drag that the car is creating against the air. To get to the limiter you will need a lot more BHP, even a normal remap will not give you sufficent power, at 4K RPM the turbo will have run out of puff and you'll be using the rather low power of the engine to try and get upto the limit.

220kmh=138mph, in ideal situations (flat road, no wind at all) the rated max speed of the octy TDi is 140mph (225kmh), so to get to 220 is pretty good.

It's a diesel, if you want high speed get a proper car :)

now,now........lets not start this again. Just for the record, my remapped PD140 has gone passed 220kmh on many an occasion. (in Germany of coarse, not on Irish roads where that would be illegal)

It's not started, because there is nothing to start :)

A diesel is not a performance car!

If I gave you the key to mine for a few minutes, I think you'd come around to the idea.

What's 4k revs ?????

Not enough, that's what!

So a re-mapped tractor engine? Nippy, but not fast :)

Now now boys - we don't want to get into another petrol v diesel debate thank you

It's obvious diesel's best 'coz I've got one ;)

Did it go a lot faster previously ? How well does it accelerate above 4,000rpm in 5th ?

Isn't the PD less "revvy" than the CR ? ie it isn't really designed to make much power over about 3,800rpm.

I'll also vote for not enough power (at those revs) to overcome the considerable wind drag at those speeds (and I hope you have plenty of pressure in your tyres when doing those sorts of runs on your private roads).

I think 138mph is pretty impressive, and very close to "book" speed. :)

my sig says it all lol:D;)

In fairness it wins due to economy not speed ;)

My PD 170 HP Hatchback hits the wall at 4200 rpm where the speed on the indicators is 235 km/h. It doesen't get passed 4200 rpm. Tried it for ~ 5 km. There was room for pressing the acceleration pedal but nothing happend. I think it has some kind of electronic limitation.

I'm sure the real speed wasen't over 225 km/h. I didn't checked on a GPS or the hidden climatronic menu 19.

The 'wall' is called maximum speed. Yes the petrol gas guzzling CO2 emitter will get you another 16kph (10mph|) but as the diesel can return such fantastic economy and do twice the UK speed limit, who cares?

Few cars bother my car's performance, I now keep up with the T5s on the way to incidents, as near as damn it.

I'm not taking the diesel v petrol bait. I KNOW which is best and it's not unleaded.

transporter T5's ??? :):)

Petrol cars need more revs because they aren't as 'muscular' as diesels. Diesels can achieve big performance without even breaking a sweat.

The only thing i miss about petrol cars is the noise

As appose to the 1.8T Audi which has more flat spots than the Dutch country-side...30Mph-100Mph I know who'd win !!!

Jesus..........thats fightin' talk. I'd nearly be tempted to jump on a ferry on the off chance I might cross your path!! On a more serious note........where you assaulted by a diesel pump as a child ??

My old PD 130 with a slightly larger windmill used to be faster than remapped 1.8T's, i would go fast rather than "nippy":D

Would you like some more happy-pills? How does the landscape look painted purple and orange?

Compression ignition inherently produces more torque. People are also comparing TURBO diesels with N/A petrols.

It's not perfect, but my 1.8T is smooth, no flat spots. My previous Octavia vRS had none either. Driving properly, I know who'd win too (a clue: it's the one fuelled from the green pump!)

Nope. People also forget that I'm not just blindly diesel-bashing. I bought a Fabia vRS new. Ran it for 9 months and 15,000 miles. Got bored of it being nothing-nothing-BANG-nothing-change-up. Traded it in for an Octavia vRS

I have sipped at the devil's fuel, and prefer the proper stuff!

And sounds like a vacuum cleaner
