furbi vrs mpg

Featured Replies

Hi,

I too always fill up to the brim including the expansion tank. I have several times put 57 litres in my Fabia Vrs.

I have exceeded 700 miles on one tank on three occasions.

I usually average 53 mpg.But I have exceeded 60 mpg average on one of those 700 miles tanks.:)

My 06 is coming up for 3 years old (birthday in Dec) 30,000 trouble free miles. I have always moaned at service time about poor MPG compared to other vRS owners (as on here) I am a bit anal about fuel and always fill tank up when near empty and work out the MPG. In a nut shell 43-44 pottling around, just over 50 on a run. Never got any where near 60mpg, but I cannot sit at 60mph on a motorway

Okay it's not a VRS so maybe I shouldn’t be posting here, it’s a mere 70 BHP Combi TDi - but I know for a fact that you can get 54.16l in the tank, and I wouldn't be surprised if there was 2 or 3 litres left in it before I started. I also know that there can be a huge difference in economy depending on driving style and road / weather conditions. With an extra gear and close to twice the BHP I can certainly see how some VRS folks are getting plenty miles to a tank-full. I can also see why some aren't - I've had my share of quick and modified motors - and had a heavy right foot. However, the bones of my *** are now close to ground level and most of the time I try and tease the best I can from a tank full. I always vent the tank and often pump in excess of 50 litres. Funnily enough, I have also found that the difference to booting the car on my commute or taking it handy is 10 minutes maximum. All my figures are brim to brim. My commute to work is 130 mile return trip, mixed roads including motorway and country lanes.

Over 53,331 miles my average is 58.95 MPG – about 1,400 miles would have been with the trailer on the back. So far I have used 4036 litres total cost E4193

The worst I got was 48.6 MPG in the snow, sub zero temps earlier this year, sliding up the length of the M7/N7.

The most I got out of a tank was 780 miles - 69.51 mpg. Car fully loaded with two passengers on holidays, taking my time but keeping up with the traffic flow.

As for the readout.... I usually show a cumulative of 4.4l/100km - 4.5l/100km before it zeros itself. According to my maths it's actually 4.869l/100km.

it seems to me, the later cars have a wildly inaccurate trip computer, mines an 04, 53 plate and the computer isnt *that* far off usually

thats just what i was going to say, the earlier trip computers are a lot more accurate

my MPG has dropped right off recently, :( put that down to having brand new Toyos put on the front instead of my super worn out Michelins,

so i've got more grip but worse fuel consumption

Hi guys, I've had my Vrs for a month now after changing from a clio 182. I know I'm saving abit each month after changing but I'm still getting used to driving a diesel. The whole point in changing cars was to save abit of money so at what rpm should I be changing gear to get best mpg? Just got 420 miles from 39 litres, is that good?

Any advice would be great.

Cheers,

Stan

Stan, 48.9mpg so not bad

Cheers for replying Zeffania!

I guess it isn't too bad as I'm still getting used to driving a diesel but how do I get my mpg to mid 50's? I drive mainly A roads/60mph roads, what rpm should I be changing at so I'm not using too much boost?

Cheers,

Stan

id bet you were only getting 30mpg in a 182 so your fuel bill should be reduced by a fair bit

Well I was getting 37mpg but that was on the trip computer so prob not true mpg. Never worked it out though.

BRUN, what mpg are you getting? Problem I've got is that I don't if I'm changing gear too soon so labouring the engine or too late so I'm using too much boost? Just want to get the best mpg possible.

Cheers,

Stan

For pure economy aim to change gear at 2000 RPM, but never allow the engine to labour. Stay in 5th until 60 MPH is reached, running it in 6th below 60 MPH unless going downhill really waste the fuel.

Be sure to give it beans frequently to burn off soot from the Turbo and keep the VNT mechanism moving. Best way to do this, is change up at 3500 to 4000 RPM through the gears, or sustained cruise at higher than 3,000 RPM to increase EGT and burn off turbo soot.

@MoggyTech - when you say frequently, is this once a week..? Once per journey..?

once a week will be fine

its not only about when you change gear, thinking ahead when driving helps, i.e. you are coming up to a red light, instead of screaming up to the light and anchoring on, back off the throttle and let the engine slow you down, this cuts the fuel injection, hence no fuel used,

also correct tyre pressures, Fabia VRS i found likes to be run at slightly higher pressures than standard, helps save the front tyre edges as well as fuel

  • 2 weeks later...

Its all getting a bit anal. I had my Furbi vRS (56 plate - currently 52k miles) remapped in March and it has not made any difference to the MPG when driving sensibly. I do about 20k to 25k miles a year and I was always getting between 370 - 410 miles per tank. This is the same with the 170BHP Shires Performance Tuning serial port remap as it was with 130BHP standard. When I first had it remapped I did an experiment and (at her request) took my Mum and two labradors from Herefordshire to the Welsh coast across country stuck behind caravans and motorhomes with a couple of terrifying overtakes just to keep Mum awake and did a 90 miles journey at 68.9MPG.

Generally though, with the remap there is a greater contrast in economy between 'nice' and 'aggressive' driving. I do a good combo of urban / country / motorway. Aggressively, the computer averages about 38MPG, but driving like Miss Daisy (omitting the ubiquitous OAP style high revs parking manoeuvres) I generally show about 53MPG on the computer.
