mk5 r32,just how much are they to run?

Featured Replies

Right mrs is nearly ready for a new car,she loves mk5 golfs and i allways say you have to have the top model,so we are looking around for an r32 with dsg,she doesn't do a great deal of miles per year, the swift is coming up 3 and has 12k on it,so exactly how much is an r32 going to cost to run? Are they really as juicy as i've heard? I think for the noise alone it would be worth it tho:D

They do sound awesome. Town driving I'd have thought you'd have been seeing high teens to low twenties. Motorway stuff I'd have thought you should be knocking on 30mpg if you stick to the limit. Last of a breed too... the new R has a 2.0T instead of the V6!

I get 24mpg around town, 30mpg on motorway at 85.

I'd say you'll get similar, if not slightly better :)

Although, to be honest... I found the Mk5 R32... boring? Test drove a DSG one and it went, with absolutely no drama. Could have done with being a lot louder!

I drove a friends heavily modified R32, and found it exactly the same. Like a Subaru or similar, its immensely capable, but theres no drama, its just far too good. I struggled to find the limits of the car.

Exactly, needs a lot more power, or (the cheaper option) stiffer suspension and a very loud exhaust!

If you are looking for an R32 just be aware that they have become highly sought after, being the last of the 6 cylinder Golfs.

it has to be an r32,and has to be a mk5,shes a woman and has made up her mind, and i'm sure she will get plenty of thrills out of it going from a 1.3 swift with nearly 100bhp,and i will have a 280bhp mk2 for real fun:D

mk5 R32? going on the talk when we were at unit18 not so long ago, have you been punting your ar*e or summat? but R32+Milltek would sound proper lush

Me too probably. Have you not introduced swmbo to the delights of an Octavia vRS ? I know you'll not get the tuneful V6 but it's a good alternative IMO.

Go for it Gary, just let me have a drive :)

R32 turbo in an Octy 4x4. Now you're talking.

we had a mk2 octy vrs when they first came out,she quite liked it but to be honest it was the dullest car i've ever driven i bought it brand new,and got rid after 3 months taking a very big deprieciation hit i just couldn't drive it anymore

Each to their own it seems....

Go for it. Petrol is only gonna get more expensive, and emissions are gonna get tighter and tighter.

Just think, you'll never be able to buy a new 6 cylinder Golf ever again, so get one while they're still low milage.

We'll all be driving tiny electric roller skates in a few years anyway.

Take a look on the uk-mkvs.net or r32oc.com forums to see what other people are achieving in terms of economy and running costs.

My insurance wasn't that much more than the furby (around £150-200 increase including mods), and around town I can get anywhere from 15-28mpg. On average around town it'll be 20-25mpg. On the motorway it struggles to hit 30mpg, averaging 80mph. A full tank of fuel costs £60-65 and gets me around 250 miles to a tank. Driven very gently it'll get closer to the 300 mile mark but I've never hit it yet.

Have you considered the mkvi R20? Granted its going to be expensive, but running costs will be lower and the technology will be much better.

Depending what model year R32 you get, the latter ones have £400 road tax, which is going to increase to around £410 after next year's budget iirc. The earliest mkv R32's have the lower £210 road tax iirc, although the savings you make on the road tax outweight the fact that the car will be much older and have no warranty.

They're a great car out of the box and excellent as a package. Ideal if you do not want to modify a car. If you do enjoy tweaking you cars, it might be worth looking at the Audi S3 or Golf GTI (Pirelli and ED30 editions) as they remap closer to the 300bhp mark. In comparison the R32 will remap to around 260bhp.

But the R32 will sound better!

Irf - if you're at the next Awesome RR meet, I'd like to take a look at your car, and see if the "boring" nature is resolved by some mild tuning

  • 3 weeks later...

I've had three hot hatches, in order.

MKIV R32 with Milltek

MKV R32 DSG

Focus ST, lowered with Milltek and a remap.

If I was to buy these again, the order would be:

Focus, MKIV, MKV.

The V6 sounded brilliant on the MKIV with the milltek fitted, however it sounded better from outside the car. The focus on the other hand sounded brilliant inside the car, and lets face it, that when you spend most of the time. It was also far more fun the either VW, but that was probably due to having 270bhp going through the front wheels.

To sum it up, the MKV R32 (DSG) is a very good car, but I always felt that it drive like a big audi rather than a hot hatch.

If I ever have the money, The latest Focus RS would be on my list

Pretty much how I felt. Very competent, but... boring? But I'll stand by saying that with slightly stiffer suspension and a nice fat exhaust it will turn it around :)

Focus ST just sounds awesome :D

Can I please ask a daft question.

What engine has the mkvi R20 got in it? Is it a 2.0l, 4-pot?

Yes. So it will lack the soul of other R's :(

Yes it's a higher tuned Mk 5 Golf GTI 2.0 TSI 270bhp. engine.

Price will be £28k+

The Scirocco R looks a better buy , 2wd only however.

Not that it matters, got a very good review in AutoCar
