Clutch gone?? Help please

Featured Replies

Hello,

Can anyone help / give opinion please.

Last night on drive home when to do a normal (i.e. not racing, not giving large, normal traffic etc..) gear change 3rd to 4th. Gear change was ok but heard a bang and snapping noise form the pedal box area, clutch pedal never came back up.

Had to coast to a stop and slip it out of gear before stopping. Trying to pull pedal up didn't help and there was sound of rattling broken plastic. :(

AA called out and towed to nearest dealer, the chap could do anything at the side of the road. Car is at dealer at the mo, but before I call them and hand over my wallet for them to empty can any one suggest what the problem might be

Cheers,

Seb

Clutch cable perhaps?
Am pretty sure the golfs are hydraulic clutch.

does the rattling come from the engine bay or the pedal box?

Hi

Yeah the AA guy mentioned that is a hydraulic clutch.

To me the snapping / breaking plastic noise came from the pedal area....

Hi GT_TDI. Sorry to hear about that  . Hope it gets fixed soon. I heard that your passenger found it most amusing

Seb,

My clutch went on Wednesday night, no snapping noise though and pedal didn't go down to the floor - it felt normal.

The AA man reckoned the clutch slave cylinder seals had gone, sorry I can't help with diagnosis but does sound more like a clutch cable snapping

Mine's in at dealers today, hopefully covered under warranty.

Hi Andy,

Thanks for that. Well going to go to the garage tonight and see what the damage might be...

I think very frustratingly mine just slipped out of warranty literally 10 days ago ... i hoping that it

Possibly may be something simple like the master cylinder linkage in the pedal box... it doesnt sound like complete clutch failure, you would have to be giving it some serious welly for it to explode, and you would have noticed before if it was slipping

Clutch can fail such that release bearing goes through the diaphragm, but it's fairly unusual. If it's a plasticky sound more likely is to do with the attachment of the cable to the pedal (or pushrod to pedal if it's hydraulic, but I think Golfs will have cable clutches).

I'm sure i've read something about clutch pedal failures on VAG cars somewhere recently, and not the usual master cylinder problem.

Might have been on SCN..

sounds like the master cylinder to me as they are made of plastic and easy breakable

Hi Guys

Thanks for the suggestions I will see what the mechanic suggests tonight and will mention a couple of these things as possibilities.

I could hardly believe my ears earlier, when I rang the dealer earlier that it has been abandoned outside of, after I described what had happened the guy on the service desk said "oooh sound like a new gear box" - you what, I don't think so, from what I've been reading today and what you guys have suggested I seriously doubt that.

Will keep you posted about what happens

Agreed, either that or the white plastic end clip that holds the pedal into the cylinder.

Maybe the noise was the clutch switch falling apart?

The saga of the clutch continues

Anybody know what
The saga of the clutch continues

I've heard of the pedal switch going, I'm sure it was a common Octavia problem for a time.

Just awaiting the diagnosis of my clutch pedal failure in my Fabia now.... Car outside warranty too, so hopefully it's something quick and easy to fix :D

Sounds like it means you are having your pants taken down mate. :(

If your car is standard then this is a fault with the car surely ?

Yeah I can definitely feel a hot poker hovering around the ring. Am going to the garage tonight and have a face-to-face which the service guys and see if we can come to an arrangement.

Perhaps the same as the Fabia where the clutch pedal assembly breaks around 60,000 miles (there's a thread in the model specific part of the forum at the moment and this happened to me on the old Tdi Fabia).

So not anything to do with the clutch per se, just the bits holding the pedal in place...

:D

I would also ask to see the bits when you get there that are broken as I suspect of you ask before you get there the bits will be, shall we say .... lightly treated with a large hammer

Anyway if it is anything like the automatically adjusting clutch on the old Clio 1.8 16v I had it was just the clutch pedal adjuster snapping which took about 1/2 hour to fix.

Seb,

which garage...not those cowboys from Martins I hope?

Ridgeway in Reading I think
