using a 20v charger with a 19v laptop - Help reqd

Featured Replies

its the same jack but 20v 4.5a instead of the 19v 4.7a charger. would this damage it?

I have ordered a new charger but its not here yet and in the meantime i could do with accessing my emails on my HDD for a job interview coming up but dont think the charger will be here in time.

God bless my n97 for awkward internet access :rofl:

Is the polarity the same? I reckon you'd be OK but I won't accept any responsibility if it goes bang!!

it is the same polarity, its pretty close but I'm more comfortable with spanners and metal than making a decision like this :lol:

well impatience got the better of me, its plugged in and seems to be charging. I'll give it half an hour and unplug it before powering on and see what the battery says :)

Should be ok, it's not too far out!

it should be fine, chances are that both the 19v and 20v supply are outputing pretty much the same thing anyway. We do it all the time at work when we cannot find the correct psu for hubs, switches, modems and so on.

Iirc you're ok over but not under, as in it will only draw what it needs.

I think so anyway lol

Well, I'm on the laptop now so it seems to have worked :woot:

Thanks for the help :thumbup:

Having fixed IT kit now for longer than I want to remember I would not have risked it, You are ok if a PSU can put out more Amps than what is required, as it will only deliver the Amps that what ever is plugged into it needs. If the device requires mores amps than can be delivered you end up with a very hot PSU which will at some point go pop!. A 20v PSU allways puts out 20v, if it had been a 15v laptop it would have smoked, but as there was only a 1 volt difference you seem to have got away with it!
