Windscreen misting up

Featured Replies

Strange this - my 2008 TSi hatch is one of the fastest demisters I've had - rear screen slower than front though.

I set it on auto with 70 degrees, then put the front screen demist blower on. (And rear screen electrics of course.)

It has been even more noticeable with the current batch of icy mornings - how quick the exterior ice melts off - hardly ever use a scraper, or spray on de-icer.

Same here, however I am a bit OCD in that I always leave the AC off unless I actually need it. Blowers and that still on auto, just the AC off. If I do need demisting, I select the option to warm your feet as well as the screen cos the AC does'nt try and come on.

What happens is the AC comes on for short time., then goes off due to temp or whatever, then blows out warm damp air!

Also any dirt or grease inside glass shows up the damp even more, hence the carlack, its the only cleaner I've found that leaves smeer free glass even with low sun. Its a paste which dries hard and then gets buffed off.

One other tip, switch the AC off about a mile from home so it can dry out.

ive pressed the econ button andturned the aircon off , since ive done this it doesnt seem to be misting up as much!!!!!!!

Of course, with the temperature as it is below 4C this past week or so, the A/C will simply not turn on. So you're back to the basic engine heating, which takes some time to have an effect.

To repeat myself (and gawd knows I don't take my own advice) make sure your screen is squeaky clean inside and you'll have far fewer condensation problems.

I've had the same chronic problem for the last two years +, I've posted a few times on here - received loads of great advice, spoke to the dealer but usually just get a shrug of the shoulders and something along the lines 'never heard of that mate' ! or a NFF after a check.

I posted about my car's latest trip to them earlier tonight - & the misting is on the menu again ! I've almost given up hope of getting this one fixed - symptoms are scarily the same as the others in this thread, especially the 'leaving it for 10mins' one. Unlike some others - this is one problem that is really starting to spoil the whole ownership experience, to the point it might be time for a swap to something non VAG group?

I've never heard of Carlack - but I'm off to check it out - I've tried them all - Rain X wipes inside (crap), Autoglym, Household Glass Cleaner etc etc...but the problem always returns.

That's odd. I always thought the point about air-conned air was that it was very dry???

give the glass a good clean with say autoglym glass cleaner, i find this may not get rid of the misting it certainly helps clear the misting once the fans blow.

Well had my car in for it's service yesterday and they cured my misting up problem

The Pollen filter was damp. So changed that and it now works fine.

I used to be a HVAC design engineer for Nissan and from my experience A/C does nothing once the ambient temp drops below 4°C.

The reason for this is because if the A/C is running at ambient below 4°C this can lead to the evaporator freezing over and then stopping all airflow through the system.

One thing that can cause the screen to mist up when the car is first started is the relatively warm damp air that has collected in the inlet plenum area is drawn through the system and then blown onto the cold glass causing sudden and extreme misting. To avoid this, as soon as you start the car and pressed the demist switch immediately switch the system to recirc mode (in that order as switching on demist will cause the system to go to fresh mode). If you then drive off, that damp air will be pulled out of the system as you drive along so after 30 seconds or so switch back to fresh (or keep in recirc to speed up the warm up but obviously as soon as misting starts to build up elsewhere switch back to fresh). :)

Also as you're driving along either pop the sunroof up slightly or crack the rear windows open if you haven't got a sunroof. This will help the airflow through the car again increasing demist performance.

But, to repeat others advice, keep the screen spotless and AVOID wiping it if it starts to mist up as it will just make streaky marks everywhere which are impossible to see through, al least if the screen is misted but not streaky you can still see through it.

Does it work for you? I tried lots of demist stuff on the market, none of them works. They only make the situation worse: the screen mists up quicker but harder to get clear. Now i just keep the glass clean so when it mists up, it is easier to demist.
