Have VRS' suddenly become expensive to insure?

Featured Replies

So, "luckily" for me, both my cars have their insurance due in the first two weeks of January. Fantastic timing, and I'm not sure how it happened, but there you go...

So, chasing a renewal for the VRS, I'm told £400. Which is surprising as it was near enough £300 last year.

A quick look round all the comparison sites and it turns out that's about as cheap as it's going to get. I'm with elephant; they were the cheapest "brand" I could find originally, and still seem to be...

It is just me, but I haven't noticed any stories of people writing-off their cars or anything else to suggest that the risk of these things should have increased 25% in the last year.

Not a happy bunny...

FWIW. i can insure a Mk1 Leon Cupra R (225bhp model) cheaper than I can insure a Fabia vRS...

It's in the cycle of the car. The accessability and wantability with certain demographics now means that more of them get bent and done over

Mine (with 8 years no-claims) was £248 (approximately), renewal early December. That is with Co-Op. Last time I checked, I couldn't come near that price with any other company. And I do know from personal experience that they handle claims well - I had some idiot drop a ladder on the vRS less than two months after I bought it. Co-Op got the (£700) damage fixed pretty quickly, and even managed to get the cash back from the other party (which I wasn't expecting, given that I had no way of proving what had happened and he was denying everything).

That said, if I go ahead and take advantage of Unit-18's remap offer, I'll have to find a new insurer, since the Co-Op won't touch modified vehicles. The quote I got from one of the site supports is nearly double what I'm currently paying (though it does offer a few extras).

Hello everyone

Just insured my Fabia Vrs on Thursday with Aviva for £248. That was including full no claims bonus, gauranteed claims protection, legal cover, hire car etc. This is for a 35 year old in Mk and the car on the drive.

Mt VRS is cheaper to insure than my previous VW Polo ! and it was a 1.4 petrol put put.

If you didn't laugh i'd expect you'd cry! Thank Christ i'm not 19 anymore! :giggle:

i did cry but i love the car so got to pay the price speeding points dont help either

Why would you pay that much insurance for a diesel shopping cart?!

I was paying £300 for my '05 Lupo GTi and now £317 for my '04 vRS - the vRS is two groups lower (under the twenty group system) so I expected it to be cheaper! However, I renewed the Lupo insurance in September '08 and took a new policy out for the vRS in October '09 so it'll be down to Elephant increasing their rates (increasing personal injury costs, the growth in the 'staging' industry etc.).

In comparison to other cars I considered buying the insurance is considerably cheaper - Cooper S and Type-R (old style) were about £450 - I only do about 5,000 / 6,000 miles a year so not prepared to pay that in insurance (road tax almost half the price of a Cooper S or Type-R into the bargain).

mine was £350 a year with direct line which i didnt think was too bad. my previous car was a 1.4 diesel toyota company car and was only £50 cheaper a year. I'm 23 and work in the motor trade so i was expecting something closer to £500 for my premium.

TBH its just the insurance lottery. I'm paying £290, inc remap and lowering. 27 years old and 4 years no claim.... None modified was £220...

Aviva via the RAC

I got a quote from confused.com, but couldn't buy online for some reason so phoned them and got it even cheaper than the quoted price - I presume the guy had some of his 'discount' to use up

I paid £1700 last year, was the cheapest "warm hatch" to insure. Longest i`v kept a car, and well worth it. :D

Me and Mrs Grr have a multicar policy with admiral.

I am 36 and have well over ten claim free years and have had full licence since 1992.

Mrs Grr is 26 and has been driving for a year and a half and has no no-claims discount...

I have a Fabia VRS she has a Fabia SDI both are 54 reg.

We pay £820 all in for fully comp cover which covers either of us to drive either car.

Protected no claims, glass and stereo cover, courtesy car. All privileges are extended to either

driver and either car. For us it's a one size fits all solution.

These huge prices are due to age and postcode though. Whatever you are looking to insure under the age of 25 you seem to pay a huge premium.

I think some of these prices are ludicrous tbh. Im 23 and pay £310 fully comp, thats with 3 years no claims, remap, eibachs declared, and 6000 mile average. Maybe its my postcode, car is garaged etc. However im happy!

Was paying £560 with remap and various other modded bits in what is really not a great postcode for insurance. No standard only £340 a year based on 10k a year. Funny enough even though the modified insurance company said a few time "oh next year we might not be able to re-insure due to the type of car havin so many accident" they did every year, yet they would not insure the up coming Octavia vRS. Which is more than the modified fabia was lol.

But its been said before like with alot of quickish cars that become affordable certain people start to own them and it all goes down hill.

Maybe its my postcode, car is garaged etc. However im happy!

Garaging seems to make very little difference - about 20 quid a year for me - so I just tell them it's parked in the street (which it is Sunday to Tuesday - I always garaged my previous car every night but as I didn't pay a great deal for my vRS I don't have sleepless nights about something happening to it - although that's not to say I still wouldn't be p'd off if something did happen).

I think my problem is the 18k annual mileage - that's commuting miles rather than business.

I have found one quote of £302, but it's from some outfit I have *never* heard of before, so it might be time to suck it up and pay the new norm...
