Indeed..

a bit like Smallpox & TB

I had a Maestro - it did its job, in a Granny kind of a way. My wife drove it for 3 or 4 years and it only had one day off the road due to a stuck needle valve, which I did eventually diagnose. My Dad had an MG Montego which he said was very good round corners - very little body roll - although of course it rusted away eventually. He also had a BGT when I were a lad - and here I am now on my second one ... :D Dad now has a ZT260, which he seems to like, although it seems rather barge-like to me, although I admit he hasn't let me drive it, so I don't really have a full set of facts to base an opinion on.

Just remember what Skoda was turning out when Austin/MG were selling Meastro's and Montego's :D

The rest of the MG/Rover range is pretty poor but the 75/ZT is well designed, reliable, good quality and very well built. But even these are starting to show their age.

The MGZT260 is no sports car but is great as a GT cruiser with loads of grunt if you can afford the fuel.

It will be sad if MGR go under but they can't continue much longer trying to sell spin offs of the Rover 200 and 400.

Cheers

But surely that's the point? It's for gentlemen running late for their game of golf... :D

Estelles and Favorits - hmmmm :rubchin:

The Montego's competition was the Sierra and the Cavalier - against those it stood no chance. It looked old-fashioned, and it was. I think its best line was the "Countryman" style that for some reason, seemed to appeal to tweedy people with dogs.

Indeed the 75 won a car of the year award in ... let me see ... 1995?

Edit: I did it an injustice - it was 1999

Especially the 400 which was a dire car right from the start. It is indeed sad, but if they're going to compete, they will have to do some R&D, and build some new models.

Give my dad the choice between the 3 and he would pick the Montego (estate that is) every time he owned both the sierra and the cavalier and hated both of them. He had his montego for 7 years and run up 110k in it with no major problems (apart from an big oil leak from the feeder pipe). He hated the sierra on the motorway as it was gutless and unstable. He hated the vauxhall because it was a vauxhall. Though he did say it was a really good motorway cruiser.

Currently he has the old rover 218 with 190k on the clock and still going strong, my mum has the same model albeit the 214.

ok so not the MG models but the rover/MG range is not that bad! Given their investment they have done a very good job of turning out the cars they have. Just wish they could bring out a new car to "get them on their feet".
