Aftermarket HID guide?

Featured Replies

hey,

I've had a look around the tech guides and couldnt find one, is there one that im missing??

what im planning to do is install some H7R, 6000K (not to attract attention) H.I.Ds, as the current ones are pants..

I've put them in my previous corsa and was wondering if its the same process, since the furby is canbus and all that malarky

thanks

I've had 2 sets of HIDs in my Fabia VRS and don't care what anybody says they ARE NOT suitable in the standard headlights.

Sorry to **** on the parade of the people who have spent 100s of pounds on them - they are not suitable.

6000k are blue.

And as said, not suitable for standard relector headlights :)

I have never used them, but know I get dazzled by so

many cars with them fitted :(

They're not type approved, for one.

The basic reason is that due to the high brightness, reflector headlights induce a massive amount of glare. This is why all OEM HID's are housed in projector lamps.

After Market HID lights are not legal. They do cause glare. Cars legally fitted with HID have to comply with a number of factors, they need to have power wash wipe and more importantly, they need automatic leveling! Light units are specially designed and built for HID lights to minimize any unwanted stray light which causes glare. This is particularly important for dipped beam. As MOT test stations are already picking out illegal LED lights, it is expected to be only a matter of a short time before attention is given to non authorized HID also. The fitting of none legal HID bulbs might be held against some one in the event of an accident, if it was thought to be a factor.

Furthermore, the car fitted with HID will have nullified their insurance.

At the end of the day opinions are like arseholes.. everybody's got one. The OP was asking if it was easy enough to install them in his car.

As I have them in mine (and declared to insurance along with a valid MOT certificate), I thought I would let him know that yes, they are easy to install but at the same time, also provide some feedback about the kits out there.

thankyou!

dont spose you have pics of where you mounted your ballast's etc?

"Anti glare bulbs"?

I am guessing you are referring to the ordinary bulbs that Chang has stuck a bit of black masking tape over?

Well my anti-glare (4300k) bulbs do exactly what they say on the bloody tin! Don't worry Yohan im with you on this one. There is a clearly defined cut off when driving towards my car, where the bottom half of the beam is pretty much gone, therefore no light is bouncing upwards.

Also the 'black tape stuck on bulb' method is exactly what the OEM D2R bulbs are, that are fitted in reflector housings to the Honda civic, Volvo V40, Lexus, and some Toyotas etc.

There are still more halogen lights out there on the road, that cause more dazzle / are poorly aligned than the stereotype comments that are given to HID sets.

That's the best pics I've got I'm afraid. I mounted them on the crash bar at the front.

Please tell me you didn't take the bumper off just to fit those????

They fit nice around there,.... even though this is Roomster, it's shouldn't be that different. BTW the OEM's are bolted to the wing area just behind the headlight assembly

I just stuck mine inside the wings.... should be fun replacing the ballasts when they go pop (potentially taking your ECU with them...)

:o why could they take the ecu with em?!

Potentially yes and so much more! esp' if the car is CAN based!

As for the bumper Decron, yes I did.

Considering it doesn't take more than ten minutes to remove the bumper and do the job properly I don't see what's so funny. It's already as tight as a ducks arse behind the Fabia headlights so why make it worse? Besides they are nice and protected under there from any road grime. Just because "that's how Skoda do it" doesn't mean I have to follow suit.

Hold on a minute! There is an FMIC there as well! That certainly isn't OEM...

Oh wait, it's called modifying and it's all about doing your OWN thing with YOUR car. Sure people are welcome to post feedback as it's an open forum, but use a bit of common sense. I didn't upload the picture and claim that it showed the only way ballasts can be installed.

Between you and Joel no wonder the search function constantly throws up useless crap...

There is no need to be like that :dull: It just makes you look defensive :giggle:

I personally think that taking the bumper off is illogical for the average user it's not going to take 10 mins plus you increase the risk of damaging it that's just my opinion of course... Well done on drawing attention to your intercooler though, looks like a nice job. I wasn't tryin to be funny when I pointed out where the OEM kits are mounted, does it say this is the ONLY way to do it? I don't know much about this modifying lark, it's all a bit new to me, but I am glad your hear to set me straight.

If you DID use the search function you would have found that photo is part of the guide I did on fitting a hid kit to a Roomster which can cover everything, of course it's just my opinion and with me being a bit green at modding you might have found a btter way of doing it.

Happy new year BTW, you sound like you need a good one

I quickly tried a HID kit in my car - but it wouldnt light up at all! been told mine needs a CANBUS version! :(

Not on a Fabia.....Can't see why you would. It doesn't have canbus and therefore no bulb warning. Does the Polo have bulb warning?

I get bulb warnings on my Fabia. Had a brake light go and got a ping and a lamp on the dash. I've got OEM HID's though so I don't know if that makes any difference?

This is why all OEM HID's are housed in projector lamps.

That's not entirely true.

The old Laguna, some Volvo's, new Civic, Qashqai all have reflector housed OEM xenon lamps. They run D2R xenon bulbs, which have a black coating on the underside of the glass to stop the light glaring off the reflector.

Edit: just read a post further up that has already mentioned these facts!!

This is the kit that I run.

Me too.

But I'm working on a Bi-xenon projector kit at the moment.

It's a pucker kit with D2S bulbs, projectors with the solenoid operated shutter & D2S adapters to use with my existing Ultimate ballasts.

Now that sounds interesting B)

Yep!
