HTC HD2 and Windows Mobile

Featured Replies

Right I want to know do any of you know much about either. The HD2 has Windows Mobile as it's OS and apparently is it's weakest area but I can't understand why. Sure it has nowhere near the amount of apps of an iPhone but it can't be that bad can it? I know WM 7 is around the corner. The alternative is the Android OS which is on the Google phone which looks to be the same as a HD2 hardware wise but just a smaller screen.

Do any of you have one or know anyone who has one and how do they find it?

I have an o2 Ignitnito which is a rebadge HTC (diamond touch I think) and runs on window mobile.

It is great for synchronising with Outlook on my office PC, so I always have my latest diary, and contacts lists.

Big problem is battery life - it is inacabple of getting through a day of miderately heavy use without a recharge, which I think is down to the demands of the WM software.

It is also very fickle at connecting to my parrot bluetooth. Sometime works fine but other time, when it says it is connected it isn't. Parrot work great with other phones.

I’m a big fan of HTC phones and the HTC HD2 is at the top of my wish list. Sadly Orange don’t do it and I have been with Orange for many years so don’t want to go to Vodafone for one. There are a huge number of You Tube videos for a look at this phone too.

I want a WiMo phone as I have 500+ contacts and use outlook for this and calendar sync. Not only can it out iphone the iphone in many areas, but it has slightly better battery life and is a built in wifi router too. There is an extended battery option for this phone too, but it does need a new back cover that is slightly more raised.

There is one negative comment about it however (and this was raised in another phone thread) Vodafone customers in particular have had problems sending text messages. This appears to be a conflict with HTCs UI and the WiMo prog. It seems the outgoing texts sometimes just clog up in the outbox and the phone heeds a soft reset to clear them. However HTC is working on a fix (if this hasn’t already been done?) and I don’t believe the text problem has been such a big issue with other providers.

what do you want the phone to do?

I have a xda serra (well I would do if it wasn't broken and away being repaired) and I find it great for my work email, calendar, contacts etc as it works without issue with microsoft exchange. You can open word documents, excel spreadsheets etc.

There are a lot of applications out there but you don't have an app store like apple or android has.

I was looking at changing to an android phone before I got my current phone but a the time the lack of exchange support was a bit of a bugger and I use copilot satnav on the phone too which also didn't work with android at the time.

The text issue has been solved I think, there have been several hotfixes from HTC recently. XDA Developers or Modaco have the full information about the fixes.

I am giving it a month and contacting orange again about the new HTC Dragon (they claimed they were getting it in Spring). If they try to fleece me I’m off to Vodafone for an HD2

I would entirely recommend the Android OS!

I used to be a huge Windows Mobile fan and have had loads of HTC phones running the windows software and loved it. Now after having Android for many months and using my old windows mobile phone a couple of times I find it very clunky and hard to use.

It is a pretty good interface and very quick to do things with your finger rather than having to use a stylus every two minutes.

It also automatically syncs your contacts, calendar and email with the Google servers.

My brothers just got a HD2, and compared to my HTC Touch Diamond 2, the HD2 is amazing. The screen is so clear, and the video quality and call quality of the phone is really good. The HD2 has WM6.5 along with the latest version of HTC Sense, and also has a marketplace where you can download apps and games and so on. I installed Tomtom on his HD2 yesterday and it got a GPS lock sitting downstairs in the living room from 6 satellites in just a few seconds. I am a great fan of WM based phones and prefer them to Android based ones, there is far more software available for the WM platform as its been around a lot longer.

The GUI of HTC Sense 2.5 is very iphone like and works in a very simillar way for zooming and suchlike, and the music player is fully compatible with Windows, it has a flash, a 5mp camera and record standard def video with amazing quality. The interface is very smooth due to the huge amount of ram (512mb) and very fast CPU for a phone (1GHZ). Storage wise, just bung in a micro SDHC card and away you go.

The new Dragon is a slightly smaller HD2 with Droid 2.1 (I think) and does most of the stuff the HD2 does. However I like to sync with my Windows Outlook and don’t really want my calendar and contacts stored in a cloud somewhere. I have been told that it is not difficult to sync with outlook using Droid, but I don’t know anyone personally who actually does this :(

I should have added you don't use a stylus with the HD2 as it has a bigger screen than the iphone and even supports multi touch

The HD2 is on 02 and I think Vodaphone have stopped selling it, or so I was told. Apparently to push the iPhone more. What is O2 like?

My brother got his on t-mobile, so they also have it.

Vodafone is Business only, but that is ok for me

And on O2 it's for everyone. Many phone providers have "unlimited" Internet but how many actually do? I'm pretty sure O2 does.

Vodafone do a£30 unlimited internet deal, but like most ‘unlimited’ deals it is subject to a fair usage policy. Either 500 or 750 mb I think. I fancied Vodafone because their coverage is better for me.

O2's idea of unlimited internet is an FUP of just 200mb per month for every phone except the iphone which has a higher limit, T-Mobile is 3GB per month.

The HD2 on T-Mobile is also available for all customers.

I have been told that although the limit for o2 is 200mb you have to repeatedly exceed it by a large amount before o2 do anything.

T-Mobile is 3GB per month.

I believe it is 5GB with Android based phones due to them being quite heavily internet based!

Other network's fair usage policy is pathetic!

I've got this will agree with the battery it does get used very quickly, even more so if you have programmes running in the background. Managed to kill the battery only one within a day after a full charge in the morning is was dead by about 6pm.

The other thing I'm having problems with as stated above the text messages that never get sent. BUt I'm on vodafone. Apart from that its a great phone better by far than my brothers HD.

You broke it!

I do like the look of the device but I have pretty much been totally converted to Android now.

Also Amanda you can sync the calendar to Outlook but not the contacts at the moment. Not without some clever messing around and trickery at least. Seems strange to me but not an issue for me as I just use the google calendar and contacts etc.

I do think the Android looks quite cuddly :)

Not sync'ing Contacts is a problem as I have well over 500+ on my phone :(

I have the HD2 on Tmobile on a £27 a month contract, great Phone love the way the SMS get filed against the contacts, great display ,TOM TOM runs good, what can i say love it some great little games available to from the Microsoft app store. I had a N95 before the HD2 which i loved but just the size of the display makes youtube and web browsing a lot better.

It does sound like the text issue is mainly a Vodafone problem. It hasn’t ut me off one yet, especially if I can find the bigger battery :)

I know there is one. I found some good info on here. Answered a lot of my questions. Once I decide which is the best network to get it on I'll get it.

Nice link. Looks like you will be there before me. Let me know how you get on. I am interested in whether the HD2 does auto-configure of email settings.
