minor rattle

Featured Replies

New Car, I've had it about 1600 miles and there is an intermittent light rattle/buzz coming from the passenger side of the car. I thought it may have been the seat belt adjustment, but moving it and padding it with tissue makes no difference. Nothing in the front or rear door pockets to rattle.

Service not due for a long time and the supplying dealer is 300 miles away (company car!)

Has anybody got a clue what it might be ?

Have you got an autodimming rear view mirror - if so check the tube to it that the cable for it runs through, from the headlining to the windscreen mount. They have a tendency to rattle against the screen and the sound can seem to be coming from alover the place - it can be fixed by tucking the top of the tube behind the headlining.

Are you keeping a pair of sunglasses in the sunglasses holder in the centre roof console?? If you are, I would suggest you try removing them and see if the rattle disappears! It took me months to track down my passenger side rattle - now solved by lining the sunglasses holder with a piece of soft cloth!!

Hope this helps.

What's it got in its door pockets precious?

Ooh forgot that one but cured it in the same way. As a result I've now identified another occasional rattle from SWMBO's sunglasses in the dash-top box - so that'll be getting a similar treatment!

A couple of suggestions..

Mine rattled from drivers door. It could be heard when door card was 'banged'.

Rather than waste a trip to the dealers (I expect they will have said its normal!) I took it apart & found that the problem was due to an unused speaker rivet bridging between the speaker magnet & metal door inner. It must have been dropped there during manufacture. Sorted.

Also, depending on the model, you may have a cubby hole under the passenger seat. I got my car when it was a year old & only discovered it after 6 months of ownership. It had some stuff in there left/lost by the previous owner who also seems to have forgotten it was there!

Have you got that little bit of plastic on the drivers side for parking tickets? I had that buz and it was from this when it came a little loose.

First thing I would suggest is to get a passenger in the car to help identify the whereabouts of the rattle, trying to pinpoint it from the other side of the car whilst driving is nigh on impossible.

I tend to whack bits of the car until said rattle goes away :giggle:

I would say the plastic clip that holds the wiring connector on the window winder motor? Does it tend to vibrate with more bassy songs on?

I found (after a lot of hunting about) that the mesh speaker cover makes a buzzing noise when the road vibrations are at a certain frequency. Flicking it mimicked the buzzing noise confirming the culprit

Have had a key ring chinking away in the glove compartment.

Woooo.....

lots of things to check, but its yes and yes to Skomaz and Whippetlady. Guess I'll have to wear my sunglasses on the way home tonight :-)

Most of my mileage is work mileage without passengers, but when I did have a passenger this week and asked him if he could hear it, he said 'no' when I plainly could hear it, and 'yes' and 'maybe' when I couldn't.

If anything works, I'll let you know

I've got the same rattle. It's eating my brain on a rough road.

I fuggin hate rattles, it was the main reason I hated the Clio, it had a full drum kit going after 4 years.

I have an annoying buzzing/rattle which was finally traced to the housing for the rain sensor vibrating against the windscreen. A bit of folded paper between the two has provided a temporary fix until the weather is a bit more conducive to sorting out a more permanent fix!

Other causes mentioned on this forum include the plastic clips that hold the passenger seat under tray in place rattling, the end of dashboard panel on the passenger side rattling and the govebox lid.

Cheers

Glen

My passenger seat rattles when I'm in the car on my own. The seat doesn't appear to be loose but if I hold it with my left hand whilst driving, the rattling stops!

Check the handbrake cable metal short metal tensioner just in front of the rear wheel. Mine was dangling (for the second time) and it sounds like a coat hanger rattling. I thought it was coming from the inside of the rear door.

My Octy's rattle came from the ashtray. A couple of match sticks pushed into the holder stopped the rattle.

Well after all these replies yesterday, I thought I'd try them one at a time.

10 mile trip at lunchtime - no rattles

20 mile trip home - no rattles

why ?

'Cos i moved the sunglasses out of the holder !!!

Much respect to Whippetlady

i got the same rattle from the mesh tweeter grill, it makes a rattlin sound on bass tones & bad roads, could be cause of the road noise, how did you solve it, what u mean by flicking it?

thanks..
