Next Generation Octavia

Featured Replies

What's anyone's best guess as to when the next generation of the Octy will make an appearance ?

Given that the average life for each generation of car seems to be 6 or 7 years, are we looking at 2011..?

I suspect it depends more on what VW does with the VW, Audi and Seat ranges. It won't want to have the Octavia too up-to-date to compete too directly with anything VW/Audi, less so Seat. I suspect the Skoda ratings will concern VW, but they can't make Skodas 'less good', just try to improve VW and probably not upgrade the Skoda range too quickly. Some stuff will come through due to economics, where it's not cost effective to keep on older parts and technology just to differentiate Skoda from VW.

Most manufacturers work on a rough cycle of 8 years.

Vehicle introduced.

Minor after 2 years

Major update after 4 years

Minor update after 6 years

New vehicle replacement after 8 years.

Im not sure where the current Octavia is in the cycle be seeing as the FL came out in 2009 it's a safe bet that there will be some sort of update in 2011.

Mk3 Octavia will be built on the MQB platform. New A3 will be coming out next year built on that platform.

I suspect we'll see the Mk3 Octavia come in 2012 on the 62 plate. It's a tricky one to call though because the Mk7 Golf is coming in 2012 too, so that may mean the Octavia is shunted to the start of 2013?

Interesting. Do you know how the MQB platform differs from the current one?

Indeed, a spy photo of the Golf VII was shown on a German site, the platform being ready for hybrid drive. Indeed, other 'cousins' would follow, and I think 2013 or 2014 would be a good guess for the O3.

Thanks for that

"All Volkswagen Group MQB platform cars will share the same engine, front axle and pedal box positioning, but the platform will be flexible enough to allow individual models to have a variety of wheelbase, track and external dimensions."

I seem to recall it being mentioned elsewhere that the next Octavia will be larger so it looks like this new platform will allow Skoda to do just that.

Just read in Autozeitung.de that the new Golf is due for 2013, so I think the Octavia will follow later (2014?). The Golf would be hybrid-ready, having a longer wheel-base .

Not sure I like the idea of a larger Octavia.

Surely that will start eating into the Superb market, especially with Twindoor?

When the HCCI engines come out from VAG around 2015, that'll change the playing field drastically in the whole petrol/diesel question... I'd like to see regenerative braking KERS style showing up in Skodas too. Not a big fan of carrying the extra weight of batteries around, but some of the supercapacitor technology being researched at the moment shows the potential to give light cheap batteries, so it'll be intersting to see how things develop.

There are occasional rumours of a Skoda small family car (perhaps based on Octy 2 wheelbase but shorter and/or as a development of a world car based on the Octy mk 1). There's a certain logic to this as, notwithstanding the Roomster, the gap between Fabia and Octy is quite big ie there's not really a Skoda Golf (not that VW would want one I suspect!). This could explain the suggestion that the next Octy might be bigger.

On the site of Auto Motor und Sport, the birth of the next Octavia is announced for 2013. It will resemble the Superb. There will be an RSR version (with the R-engine of the Golf R, 270 bhp), but no hybrid. It will be based on the chassis of the Golf VII (wheelbase = wider, 6 cm and longer, 4 cm).

See a picture? Go to http://www.auto-motor-und-sport.de/news/skoda-octavia-neues-vernunftsauto-fuer-2013-der-neue-octavia-kommt-zur-iaa-2013-1747574.html

See the Skoda City? Keep on clicking on the images, and you'll find the car (image number 5).

Nice looking car. It definitely looks like Skoda are trying to put the Octy up against cars from the class above - ie Passat, Mondeo, etc. Does make you wonder whether or not it will be too similar to a Superb though.

Nice pics. Thanks. I think I'll be keeping my pre-FL until that comes out.

I skipped past it as i thought i was looking at a Audi A6 !!

The hatch looks nice but I don't really see much difference in the estate.

Technically the Octavia is a golf, astra etc competitor. However, many fleets have them as well as Vectras and mondeos.

The Mk3 will move up properly into this class, and the superb will go after bigger cars like the 5 series etc.

The current superb is only 2 inches shorter than the bmw 5 series, the superb being 16ft 1, and the bmw being 16ft 3.

I dont see the octy ending production in Q2 this year, we are almost in Q2 and there is no sign of a replacement and why spend all that money designing a facelift to pull it a few months later.

Anyone any information on this. It is unfortunately a subscription page

VW plant to replace Skoda Octavia with family-oriented cars Q2.

Surely this must lead to an even longer waiting time for a new Octavia

It looks as if the car is lower and more stretched. I certainly like it! Start saving for a new one...

Don't get too excited by those pictures chaps, they are just artists impressions.

The old Octavia 1 (known as Octavia Tour) in Europe will be ending production at the end of this year and Skoda will be replacing that with a budget saloon type thing probably early next year.

Replacement for the Octy 2 should be 2013 as the article says. I hope it does look something along the lines of those artists impressions though, I like it

I'm confident it should be a nice looker. Skoda's new chief designer is the guy who penned the Bugatti Veyron and recentely said that Skoda's future design direction would be "more avant garde"

I wonder if Skoda would think of producing a 7 seat taxi version, a bench at the back with 3 rear facing pull downs behind the driver so there is room to take a wheelchair, with conventional doors instead of those sliding ones
