Speeding up Bolero SD, possible solution

Featured Replies

What I want to do is simple. I just want all my tracks in a flat folder, that I can then shuffle between. I'm not interested in playlists- I just want to be able to shuffle from track to track of my entire collection..

As was previously suggested, as a test I put 1 track on root the card, and the rest of the music 9 folders down. When I put the card in Bolero, it hung on 'processsing' for about 5 minutes, and only then would play the track in the root.

I then thought I'd try DanishVikings program- I copied all my tracks to the root folder of my sd card- there are no folders, it is just a flat list of tracks. The program ran ok, but it did not move the music and all it did was create a '1' folder, and an empty playlist. If I then put the card in the Bolero it very quickly came up with 'SD error'.

What did I do wrong? Has anyone got any suggestions as how I can do what I want to do- again all I want is a flat file of tracks that I can shuffle?? I am slowly losing the will to live here....

First of all see #161 and do as it says - use his new v3 though and click on the top button first.

You will encounter problems if you put all your files into one folder as that will be a DOS limitation! ALWAYS use folders but limit the number of tracks in each due to DOS.

The SD error will occur unless you have the single mp3 file in the root - I usually add it after running DanishVikings program so I'm not sure if his program moves it if it's already there?

Unfortunately being not interested in playlists doesn't mean that you can't really get by without them - DV's program will now give you a complete SD card playlist (and even a customisable one) as long as you follow the DOS limitations and the basic setup instructions.

OBI WAN KENOBI cannot help you as he, as far as I know, doesn't have a Skoda with a Bolero fitted! :S

Actually I'd even consider doing MP3 CDs, how many does the Bolero take? 6? Now using Roxio & Gracenote to do all my music with tags. (Wish me luck, I maybe gone some time!)

Here is version 2 of my little organizer for Bolero SD-cards. The first version worked, but not completely foolproof - no pun intended But please follow the instructions: Copy music folders to so

If you put all your mp3s 9 folders down as you have done.

Then run the program playlist creator

Then after you have run playlist creator add a short mp3 to the root of the card.

About a minute after you insert the card the file in the root will start to play.

Then press selection on the Bolero and the playlist will come up then press mix.

From then on it will play within seconds each time you start until the next time you remove the card when you will have to do selection / mix again.

]Danish Vikings program is much better but it does require your files to be in single folders i.e. individual albums.

Unfortunately, the Bolero firmware is so poorly written that the mix function when used in a playlist doesn't mix from the whole playlist, only the first 100 or so lines...

If the Columbus isn't affected by this, then I wonder how much you could get Columbus's for on a group buy? emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Multiple Columbus units = lots of money :-)

Thanks ever so much for the reply.

I've done everything you suggested- and I still get a SD card error

The only thing I can think of is that maybe there are two many tracks in one folder- you did warn me. If 25 tracks too much?

Thanks

Not sure what the limit is for the Bolero, but the maximum number of files in a folder for a FAT32 file system is 65534

I've had over 50 files in a folder and the Bolero handled that ok.

What's the layout of the files on your card? The Bolero can only scan 8 folders down, but can read further than that when using playlists... If you don't have any music files in the top 8 folders the Bolero can't cope and gives that error.

Oops - this is where the thinking head and the typing fingers sometimes don't match up!

Raglists is correct about the file limits but it may also be down to the path length which I believe is 256 characters and some inherent DOS limitations within the Bolero?

Can I suggest that you start with the basics; maybe one folder with 20 tracks and ensure that the music actually plays and then work forward from that?

How about SD cards - are the slow cards (3MB/s) working OK on the Bolero?

How about SD cards - are the slow cards (3MB/s) working OK on the Bolero?

I've got some old 512Mb cards which don't have any speed ratings on them and they work fine. The initial wait isn't so pronounced either if there aren't any playlists due to the relatively small capacity!

How long before your car arrives?

I hope my car (including Bolero  ) will arrive in a month or so. After a vacation trip to France I'll maybe work the application over a bit.

By the way, there's now a version 4 (still the old link), with some improvements regarding custom playlists - much faster now ... B)

Thanks everyone for all your sage advice. It finally works! Thank you one and all, and particularly DanishViking. You have all been a great help and spared me months of 'trying to figure it out myself' purgatory.

Let's hope that whoever at VAG is responsible for the programming of the ICE units, is not the same team who produce the software for something important like the braking system or something otherwise we will all be in trouble! All joking aside, it is frustrating that we need to work around the unit like this, just to get half decent performance. It's doubly frustrating for Yeti owners as in the UK, you can't even spec MDI, so an SD card is the only option you have if you want to be able to navigate through a sizable music connection.

Once again, my sincere thanks for your advice and I wish you all well, and DanishViking, I hope you enjoy your new car.

Martin

Thanks Danish Viking for your program it works well.

Another problem with the Bolero is that it is quite fussy on which type of MP3 tag it will display. If I use type 3v2.3.0 then it will display the information correctly i.e. Artist /Song /Album. If the track uses a different type of tag then you may only get the Artist or the song or the album displayed on the screen. Can anyone suggest a program that will change tags to type 3v2.3 automatically?

Try Tag&Rename - not sure if it does it automatically but the other features are very good!

Danishviking@ Great tool, just tested it in my Yeti with Bolero and it works perfectly.

I have a Dane Electe 8gb SDHC class 4

Previously it took quite a time before the Bolero could access the data, now I started

the first track and then selected the other files with mp3 music.

Again thanks very much for your programme.

Rgds.

Thanks for the advice earlier in the thread about setting up a single track on the route directory and then putting all the other folders on the next level, this definitely works as it seems to be the only way to get mix working even on a new car which must have the latest firmware.

I have noticed that in mix it plays one song from each album in alphabetical order of the artist, hopefully it will pick different tracks the 2nd time through.

I've given up & I didn't even bother with my Ipod on the MDI system today, on the 3hr trip to see Ben in Mansfield today.

Just had BBC R2 on all the way there & back as it provides useful Traffic Infomation + I like to listen to Steve Wright's Afternoon Show, especially the oldies bit.

I've added some rather useful features (with my own intended use in mind ...), and I think this is close to the final version, unless some of you come up with really brillant ideas.

I'll of course try to correct errors, should there be anyone - actually I haven't been able able to test it on my own Bolero yet :)

Appreciate your work DanishViking, but please, can't you rename the files with some kind of convention like setupv5.zip?

No, but I think in the next version, I'll make it capable to automatically check for new versions ... B)

It's not a good idea to rename the download link every time ...

So are we still on V5 or can we expect any new updates ?

I need to start getting my SDHC card ready for when my vRS arrives emoticon-0103-cool.gif

EDIT

One thing I do notice is that some members are getting confused about the setting up/preparing of the sd card.

I myself find it is frustrating to have to troll through all the posts to find the "HOW TO" suggested as the thread goes along and the util gets updated.

Could I suggest making this "STICKY" for this util and a full guide in the first post?

Is this util win 64 friendly yet?

If not

Can I prepare a folder on my hard drive and start filling it with Albums to the 16gb limit.

Then copy them to the root of my sd card when the time comes and use this prog in my sons netbook to run the util on it,

Then stick one mp3 in the root?

Well, I got my new car with Bolero and sound system ...

The firmware of the Bolero must have been updated:

... now it reads deeper than 8 levels

... it doesn't recognize playlists (*.m3u)

... it's only slow when reading the card initially, and not when changing songs

... apparently it has some limitations regarding number of folders or songs. My full 32 GB is only partially recognized
