from vrs to superb ? yey or nay

Featured Replies

hello

im currently driving a 07 vrs 2.0T octavia, and looking to change this year

i love my 'tavia but have always said id never have the same car twice, (but am thinking hard about it) so next best thing for my needs is a superb ...

but there are a couple of questions i have

1st quesion - i only do 10k a year so was looking to a petrol and the 1.8TSi, i know its going to be less powerfull then me vrs but is it to under powered for the superb ......

or should i take the bullet and go for the diesel 140 (but be honest not a great diesel fan ...)

2nd question - , im looking to spoil me self so was going for top spec elegance, only thing putting a downer on this is the sat nav, i know a few people in the motor trade and they have had a spate of sat navs stolen from cars, and reading in auto car the other week the increase on sat navs being stolen is on the hike big style ....

any helpers ......

I went from an Octy L&K to the Superb Elegance with loads of toys. I priced up a comparitivly specced VRS and it couldn't come close for value. Three months on I have no regrets, I reaaly enjoy the car and its comfort. The car can still shift quite smartly when asked and handles surprisingly well for its size. My wife has now inherited my year old Octy and when I get into it it feels plain and crude (not that it is) but the Superb is so much better.

I specced a Columbus unit in the Octy and to be honest I would be more concerned with reliability issues of the unit rather than it being stolen. I took the Octy to Poland a couple of summers ago and if it was going to disappear then it would have happened there. Nothing is safe these days so just make sure that you choose a good insurer!!

I had a close look at the Superb when I thought about changing.

It is a big car, much bigger than the Octavia and too big for my day to day needs although would have been ideal for our bi-annual family trip to Dunbar.

One thing when looking at prices is not to take any notice of the price lists.

With Octavia VRS there is 17.5% discount (VAT off), a further discount from the dealer if you haggle and 0% credit offer making the net price quite a bit cheaper than the Superb.

Do a search on DTD to get real world prices, some dealers will match these

Hi. I have a 1.8 TSI DSG and find it had plenty of go for me. It replaced a 140 diesel A3 and I don't feel they are that different. One thing I have noticed about the superb is that it does not feel big to drive - certainly not versus other options I tried like the v70 or a6. I have the SE - plenty on it for me and as it is my own money the elegance was difficult to justify. I'd definetely suggest having a look at the se spec. Only downside is fuel consumption - I've done 2500 miles and only getting 33mpg - but a lot of that is around London. Will do 40mpg on a motorway run at 70mph. Hope this helps.

Hi Dave,

Like you're considering, i went from a Octy II 1.9Tdi PD 105 to a Superb II with the same engine

.

I loved the Octy and so did my other half. The change to the larger car was worth it for the following reasons:-

1) Newer design with Golf Mk 6 style interior plastics/clocks/switchgear

2) Relative exclusivity compared against the Octy

3) More interior space, especially in the rear passenger compartment

4) Novelty of the rear Twin Door which works well and is a good talking point

5) NCAP 5 rating as opposed to NCAP 4 for the Octy (ESP and driver's knee airbag as standard)

6) Increased refinement ie. less wind and road noise

7) Larger fuel tank= increased range over Octy

8) More equipment as standard

As your annual mileage is 10,000 miles, I suggest you avoid a diesel and instead consider the highly regards 1.8 TSI.

I note you live in Evesham. I live in Worcester. If you'd like a passenger ride of my Superb, you're most welcome.

We have a octy 2 and a superb 2 , i bet you miss the boot space of the octy;)

The superb certainly eats up the miles better than the octy thats for sure and it does have a good spec

Get the TSi, I had an Octavia previously and the new Superb handles very well, the old Superb handled like a barge! the engine is near silent and I had reservations with the power but the supercharger gives lots of low down grunt.

It's better than my Superb 140PD (company car) and as good as a 170CR (which I test drove).

Well I missed my octy estate for a long time fantastic car but the superb 2 is better yes its long but so much more than the octy superb all the way

The 1.8TSI is by all reports an excellent engine, but the 2.0TSI is on the way too ;)

I

Supercharger??

I expect the 1.8TSI DSG will accelerate better with a amateur driver in it than a 2.0 TSI manual.

How do you find the 105 in the superb 2 compared to the Octy? Im lookin at that engine in my new superb

Hi, well i've just decided to change my much loved Octy VRS LE for a Superb 170CR 4X4 Elegance which i'm hoping to pick up on the 1st of march. I've had the VRS for 9 months and loved it, but i've put 30k on it already and i wanted something i bit more refined, so took a test drive in a superb and loved it. Can't wait to pick it up. Cheers

From new, the 105 PD was reluctant to lug, although, this is hardly surprising with a tight engine.

At 3k miles I had the Superb remapped which instantly transformed the driving experience.

I seem to remember the 105 PD in my Octy II as being more flexible from day one, consequently, I never considered a remap.

The economy in my remapped Superb is better than in the Octy, however, some of the improvement is due to a change in driving style since joining the IAM.

If I were choosing another Superb I'd be tempted to wait until March 2010 for the new 2.0Tdi CR which should be quieter than the 105 PD and have the benefit of a six speed gearbox and lower emissions than the outgoing 140 PD.

Yep id love to but the price would scupper me, Company car so im pretty restricted and the 1.9 fits the price tag

if i rock the boat at all they will just order me a mundano (mondeo) or an octy

Whilst the Mundano handles well and has a superb ride, the interior is nothing special and the instrumentation downmarket.

An Octy would not disappoint, however, in comparision with a Superb II it is outdated, noisier and two a penny on the roads.

Go for a 1.9Tdi Superb II; you get an awful lot of car for your money! The Superb II does not look out of place against far more prestigious machinery. As part of my work I often visit multi million pound houses and not once has anyone made a derisory remark about the Superb.

Well i have a bit of an ace in the hole here, I have requested lease prcing on the Ambition, But i slapped on Bi-Xenons, Sports Tailpipe and 17" Alloys, Basically i need it to come in cheaper by over €10 a month against the mondeo to swing the car, If it doesnt come in cheap enough, I just remove the Lights from the spec and hey presto! Approval! :D

In reality, the engine might not be as powerful but the trim level in the Irish Ambition pi$$es all over the Mondeo Zetec!, and a mondeo is such a repmobile!

My Superb is a company car. When I was choosing a replacement I could have had a Superb S 105 PD with £1,500 of extras, or a Superb S 140 PD with metallic paint and cruise. I opted for the 105 PD in order to create a car with a spec level slightly better than the Octy II Ambiente it replaced. In the end, my car was equipped with the following extras and just scraped under my monthly leasing allowance:-

Rosso Brunello metallic paint

Cruise control

Small leather pack

Three spoke steering wheel

Headlight washers

Bolero radio/CD

Maxidot

Rear door retractable sun blinds

At my own expense, I paid for the dealer to fit all roud mud flaps and the flexible plastic boot liner.

Believe me, the 105 PD offers acceptable performance for most circumstances, plus there is no DPF (Greenline excepted) issue to worry about.

Sounds like you got a lovley motor!, and thanks for the advice!

SHMBO wont let me get the rosso brunello, god knows why, so im thinking candy white or platin grey!

i deffo would get the mudflaps and after what i put my s40 through the boot liner in this one will be a must have!

are the retractable sun blinds any good?, are they automatic or manual?

Rosso Brunello is a very deep maroon colour, and looks much better in the flesh than any photo or colour chart shows.

I have just changed from an octy to a DSG Superb, in Rosso Brunello. You dont really notice the extra length or width in normal driving, but its length becomes apparent when parking, The superb is much longer, almost 1 foot longer than the octy, so you need longer spaces for parallel parking. You also need to make sure (speaking from experience here) that your garage is long enough to accomdate the car (if you use your garage). My garage is 2 inches to short for the car to fit.

I am probably going to face the same decision (but not just yet) - I currently run a 3 year old petrol VRS hatch which I have just extended the warranty on (by two years) - with the intention of either buying another VRS (but estate) , maybe the Superb estate or something with 4 x 4 capabilities (maybe a Scout???). I do wonder if the Superb might be too big - but it just looks the biz (& I think my current Race Blue VRS takes some beating in the looks dept). If I go the Superb route, I'll be after as many toys as I can get along with decent performance for my money - probably used, maybe 12-18 months old. MPG not such an issue as I now only do 6000miles a year, with an MPV as the family transport! (I am banking on the MPV not needing replaced that year too !!!!)

Any suggestions on engine/spec - I am guessing at this mileage - it has to be petrol, but which one? Essential extra's etc etc? I guess I'd probably have £7-8k + trade in value of a 5 year VRS with say 30k miles on it (but loads of extra's - Xenons, 18's, cruise, jumbo etc etc) whatever that equates to??

are the retractable sun blinds any good?, are they automatic or manual?

The sun blinds are manually operated and are concealed tidily within the door (you pull from the top and secure in a retainer just over the window).

Yes, I think they are as effective as an aftermarket blind and look more attractive than those suction type sun blinds.
