Am I daft?

Featured Replies

HI all.

I've been going through a bit of a rough time at home at the moment, hence why I haven't been on herevery much.

Anyway, my Fabia is doing my nut in at the moment, just little niggley things that I want to put right but cant really be arsed.

To cheer myself up, I'm thinking about trading my Fabia in for a Vauxhall Astra Coupe Conv. Bertone edition.

I looked at the 2.0 turbo but canot afford, so would have to be 1.8 n/a.

I'll be getting a job within walking distance in a few months, so current 40 mile a day commute will be gone.

How much would a Fabia VRS, 04 plate, 60k, a few extras like remap, 312mm upgrades, black, FSH, be worth nowadays?

Canyone suggest any other cars?

Must be able to get a kiddies car seat in the back!

Here is a pic of Astra Conv...

Personnally I think thats a backwards step

It's just a summer car, and it will be slow as hell with that lump.

IMHO of course :D

Yes, well unless you happen to be a ladies' hairdresser that is!

Seriously, I've driven that series Ashtray, and it's not as nice a place to eb as a Skoda, even in an Ashtray hatch. Add to that the extra weight and flexibility (and image qv) of the convertable (assuming you actually open it; so many don't)...

I like the Mk4 Astra...however, generally it only makes sense as a cheap car, either as:

1. a small engined (or diesel) in a low spec, or

2. a hot edition with a high spec that's depreciated heavily

The cabrio 1.8 wouldn't satisfy either of these, and they're also tight in the back for access to a kid's seat (not impossible though). The 2.2 is better in terms of actual performance, but it doesn't deliver power in a particularly willing/exciting way.

Do you have your heart set on a cabrio? If not, the coupe version tends to be quite a bit cheaper, for the money you might have more luck getting either a better example of a 1.8 or a better engine...

Rob.

Basically, I'm starting a new job, and will be doing a lot less miles.

I do 40 miles a day at the moment, and new job in walking distance.

So see no need for the Fabia.

I fancy a convertible, basically to a) pose and B) wind my ex up to hell.

Other than that, I'd probably consider a smallish warm petrol, but again, I've gotta fit a kiddies car seat in the back, but not bothered about 5 doors.

Insurance is the biggie, as I'm 21 with 0 ncb.

dont really want to lay out more than 1-1.5k on top of what I'd get for Fabia.

Not sure what size kiddie seat you have, but my average stage 2 one (for a 4 year old) won't fit in the back of the Astra convertible so worth taking it along to try before you buy....

Yes, daft and homosexual!

Never seen a man drive one!

Joel, Dont do it mate.

But if you do, sell me the Fabia :D

No, don't sell him the Fabia. He's not allowed one.

GaaaH not a disastra!

Thats a bad move for sure, i have driven a zafira with the 1.8 n/a lump in it.. what an awful engine!

Hmmm yes, the 1.8 eco$hite is not the best....

No, don't sell him the Fabia. He's not allowed one.

Oi !

Diesel is the way forward...i'm sure it is !

Getting back on topic.........................................

Yes you are daft. Don't do it............ simples

Echo...don't do it! The 1.8 is a turgid dull excuse of an engine.

Plus...what if your ex decides to slash the soft top? I know a guy who this has happened to :o

I fancy a convertible, basically to wind my ex up to hell.

There are easier ways to do that than to buy a car that makes you look a bit gay.

I reckon you'd get bored very quickly and regret the move. If you must get a convertible, then there's got to be something out there with a bit more style.

I personally refuse to go in a convertible since my mate made me drive from Scarborough to Bridlington and back last summer in his MG TF. We looked like a right couple of poofs. There are very few convertibles that don't make you look like a homosexual. Or maybe that's just me. :(

Edit : Sorry if that sounded a bit harsh. If you've had a rough time lately, you may not be thinking straight and might make some rash decisions. Wait a bit and see if it makes sense in a month or so. In the mean time, have a couple of beers and relax.

I wonder what outcome this thread would have had if it was posted on a vauxhall forum :giggle:

i'm also on the vauxhall forum although not active these days, and the astra drop top is hated on there too lol.the 1.8 is a poor engine in the hatch, i had one previously so cant imagine how much worse it will be in a much heavy convertible,

I use to have the 2.0 Turbo Mk4 Coupe, not the fastest accelerating car. But it didn't hold back, the 1.8 Coupe is equally as fast on single carriageways until it comes to gearchanges. Where the 2.0T has got that longer gearing that would see you sailing past whilst there changing gear.

If mine hadn't have met its demise, i would have still had mine. Much more prefered it to the Mk2 Octy i've got now.

The 1.8 lump is quite strong, the usual faults are the coilpacks breaking down and the MAF's failing. Sometimes EGR Valves get clogged up.

I had the X18XE1 lump in a Mk4 3dr Hatch rather than the Z18XE1 lump which is 12bhp difference, never skipped a beat that engine. I did know about the EGR being a little funny at times, but wasn't bad enough to warrent changing it.
