vRS TFSI Quaife LSD

Featured Replies

Having issues getting power down with my car so I'm considering a Quaife QDF16R LSD to try and help traction.

My question, has anyone fitted one to a vRS and if so what are your experiences, and is it worth doing?

Cheers

not driven one on a vRS, but have on a a cupra and golf. both stage 2+ k04s. excellent mod and i will be getting one of the three options available.

this is quite a long review on the quaife LSD on a GTI. http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=651.0 towards the end thwere is a guy caled hurdy who has bought the quaife as well. hes ran his at awesome three days ago and put 325hp at the wheels and 400Ibft torque, hes above 300Hp from 4k onwards in a big flat plateu with a really flat torque curve as well. at the pod with his diff he has been putting sub 5 second 0-60 runs with slips to prove it. jonnyC is running over 500Hp from his big turbos ed 30 and doesnt have issue with traction unless its wet, saying that he is also a rcing driver so is probably much better at throttle control than us. Also on SCN DanGB is running the Peloquin diff on his GT2871 leon.

there is a new option available now which is the wavetrac which has a more advanced design. slightly more expensive, and there will be a guy on there getting it fitted to his car next week i think.

i say you should look into the WALK as well. the additional castor gives you that better dynamic camber for turb in, i definately noticed less wheel spin. im looking into getting theMk2 TT lower control arms as well. they are lighter and camber adjustable unlike ours. means you can run upto 1.5 degrees negative camber. our cars run 1 degree negative from stock. from whatr i have read from guys who have done it is zero increase in tyre wear has been noticable and turn in grip was hugely increased

PM Fluffmeister Harry as he had one in his vRS (don't know if it was peloquin or quaiffe)

This is my personal Opinion but i think the WALK is a bit of a Gimmick. My car now seems to wheelspin more easily. I haven't noticed any difference at all with it and it actually seems worse to me but then i havent had it on a dry road yet.

Was fitted by JKM aswell so not as if it's me and got them on back to front etc :giggle: :giggle:

@Sy - What settings do you have your front and rear ARB's on.

Mine are currently both softest but i remember you saying you altered yours and found the best solution. Plus can you alter it on a set of axle stands or is it a ramp only job. I can vaguely remember from fitting but not too sure

To be fair, WALK was never designed to kill wheelspin, but to reduce understeer which, IMHO it does very wel...

i think your in the minority there. i definately dont get as much wheel spin cornering after fitting it. ARBs made a bigger difference but the WALK did have an improvment. get you alignment checked as after fitting my ARBS at JKM my alignment was well and truly off with the car pulling to the left quite badly.

CaArl you have PM on MK5 forum

It's maybe a fair point Si, in that it was not primarily designed for that but I agree with you that it is certainly a useful side-effect which I have also noticed - it didn't work some kind of 'FWD miracle' for me either but the benefit is notable. Also, in addition to the reduced understeer and ability to keep the power down safely in a corner, the reduced axle tramp (which was hammering the beejeeziz out of my car) is most welcome!

Back on topic, I'd love to see the LSD in action as I have considered it for the future myself. I'm surprised you haven't done it before now Harry with what you are trying to put through your front wheels! :peek: but, like you, I'd need to see it, feel it and believe in it before parting with all that cash.

go for a ride in robins GTI when you get to JKMs on saturday. his car is fully loaded with VWracing lower and side engine mounts, Walk, KW V3 coilovers, Quiafe LSD, Brembo $ pot brakes, twintake and all sorts.

Sorry to bring this thread back to life but I have just ordered one of these beauties. I will post my experiences once it is installed :)

Nice.... :)

Should allow you to fit another 100BHP or so of mods.... :D

Did our chat on Sunday have anything to do with the new purchase Harry :giggle:

By the way i'll start looking into the other option ASAP. Need some prices on parts first of all.

I'm really interested to see what difference the diff makes B)

Hi Mark. Yes it did, it's the first step I'm taking to improve the drivability of the car :)

I've read nothing but good things about them and I'll be documenting the findings once fitted.

Effectively, I'll be doubling the amount of torque that can be transferred to the road.

Hi Harry,

I'm getting a Quaife after the end of the month pay day - like you, getting the power down with a KO4 is a bit of a challenge. Would be interesting to compare notes :smirk:

Where/when are you getting it fitted?

  • Author

Well I'm hoping to fit it myself the weekend of Sat 2nd April

I've also got the ARP bolt kit at an eye watering £90

Which LSD did you opt for?

I dearnt ask how much :o

I'm really interested to hear how it goes, especially when considering the 4x4 option.

I went for the Quaife in the end. There is a slightly more advanced design of differential made by Wavetrac which is on the market but it's a bit more expensive.

Not looking forward to drilling out the rivets to remove the crown wheel :(

Yeah, the whole thing is pricey and I am still not too sure how much it will help in straight line traction vs. the cornering where the benefits are a bit more clear cut. However, I get a bonus at the end of the month and have been balling over one of these for about a year now so thought what the heck. I get over to Philadelphia occasionally so was tempted to get over to AP Tuning where prices for both Peloquin and Quaife seem a bit tamer ($749.00 for a QDF 16R) but the trip wasn't coming up and carting about 12kg of LSD back didn't appeal to me.

JKM will be doing mine as I plan to get the clutch done too and don't have the bravery to tackle it myself...doesn't it involve a bit of drilling? [Edit - our posts crossed so you've answered that one!]

  • Author

It will help straight line traction quite a bit I'm hoping. Like I said you're effectively able to apply twice the torque to the road, as power is distributed to both wheels instead of the wheel with least grip and it simply spinning.

At the moment I can quite easily spin the wheels in 3rd, and even in 4th if it is wet so this diff will hopefully dramatically reduce this. The weather is getting nice again so it's the perfect time to fit one :)

This should give you a better idea of what is involved to install one

carting about 12kg of LSD back didn't appeal to me.

Did you say Philidelphia or Columbia? :smirk:

Besides you'd never get 12KG up your a*se :rofl::rofl:

After reading many different reviews and opinions of guys id be quite tempted with either the new pelequin diff that has just been released, or the wavetrac, as both are said to outperform the quaife in alot of areas

I would never have thought about changing my diff. i have left my cars std as i keep thinking about the warranty, and dont see the point in uping the power of the diesel. Cant wait to read/see the outcome though.

  • Author

When you've got 330bhp+ at your disposal all of which is being sent to the front wheels it kind of becomes a necessity lol

Oh boy racers and there toys :rofl:

  • Author

Oh wimps and their warranties more like ;)

spot on there me thinks, why can't we be like america were the dealers will encourage and tune the car.
