Ordered a new white vrs.......waiting for build date. Dealer now has there managers white vrs back on sale(sold but finance could not be secured on it). Offered to me £400 more than new but with leather, xenon, sat nav and parrot bluetooth. 59 plate (nov) vs new 10 plate. Anyones thoughts?

err, its a no brainer surely.

Unless they want to sell a second hand car for less than a brand new car then tell them to stick it. Save yourself £400, wait a a couple of months and have the pleasure of driving a brand new car

Devils advocate though - and yes I agree with you...

Leather and SatNav are quite expensive extras

(Personally I'd want my shiny new one!)

3500 miles - run in for me

Extras are the only pull but never had a new car before

The price difference is not enough to justify taking the 2nd hand car over the new one.

Ask yourself what price they would buy a 59 plate car off you for should you need to sell a nearly new car. They'd also state "that extras don't add to the value of a car, just make it more saleable" - a salesmans favorite phrase!

Steve

If it's that price and no less I'd probably stick with a new car , but I reckon you'll be able to haggle a discount from their initial offer and then it starts to make a lot more sense.

3500 miles.. not bad.

But, and this is something I come back to every time I think about a vRS... I'd never have one I didn't know what has been done to it before. Who knows how it has been driven.

Though, saying that, I had an Ibiza FR (1.9TDI 130) and that was an ex hire car, was great1

so you are talking about a £2000 saving over buying a new car £1580 for the sat nav and £820 for the leather as options less the £400 extra over your current possible order. Which is not a great amount of saving. Is the £2000 really worth it to you by having a car that will be a reg older and owned/ragged by someone else.

I would say Dr Z has a good point haggle for more off and it could be worth thnking about.

reason for edit: looked at the prices and its a larger saving than first though

It's been driven by the sales manager - it will have been thrashed everywhere!

For me leather would be nice to have, Columbus I would not be fussed over, Parrot system £200 to £300 fitted at Halfords.

Do you really want those extras and if so why did you not order them? Cost probably IIRC £1400 for satnav and £800 for leather.

Remember when you come to sell it there will be an approx £400 difference in trade in price, 2009(59) against 2010(10). As someone has said the extras will not make it worth more possibly more saleable.

I got a quote off a Ford dealer to buy my Focus ST and he offered be book price, when I said 'what about the sunroof', he said it made no difference to the price.

For me I would stick and wait for your new car

Really depends on how desperate you are to have a brand new car.

I've done brand new cars - my two cars before my current vRS were brand new.

All I did was see a car that arrived to me with 12 miles on the clock heavily depreciate over the 4yrs I kept them for.

I'll never buy brand new again - instead opting for 12-18 month models that have already suffered their major depreciation.

I totally agree the cost of a new car depreciates heavily. Usaually go with 12/18 months old.

But this deal with VAT off seems quite good value when looking at used prices and also considering the FL changes.

It looks to me I'll wait for new

Same here, VAT free has already wiped off £3K of depreciation (as the book price is a smidging under 20K)

Push for £3k off the price or just ad the extras to your order.

New.

Dealer is lifting your leg IMO.

Even with zero miles on the clock it would still be a pre-reg and not worth as much.

Might be worth a haggle though.

and you get a lot more car for your money

And possibly not just by the sales manager. I borrowed my local dealer sales manager's vRS for a day's test drive. Ok, I didn't thrash it as my reason for borrowing for the day was to see how economical it would be for me to/from work. But, it's entirely likely other dealerships allow this too, and not everyone may have treated the car nicely!

So basically its ex-demo then.

My logic is that its unlikely test-pilots would be less harsh on the car than I probably would be!!

It all depends on how much you want leather and nav - if they aren't must-haves then go for the new one imho.

Generally speaking, optional extras, however desirable, add little or nothing to the value of the car. They may make it more desirable & easier to sell, but £1000 leather will not add £1000 to the 2nd hand price!

Last year, before the facelift came out (I still prefer pre-facelift as it happens!), I purchased a 6 month old ex-managers Vrs estate, 5000 miles on the clock, with PDC, for 13K, which was a good 3.5K less than the new price. It may have been an exceptional price though, as my car with current mileage (11,000) still seem to go for what I paid for it.

So I would be looking at the car they offered you being a good 2k less than new, not more!!

Depends on what you want, do you want the pleasure of driving off the forecourt in a shiny new car, or would the idea of a slightly older but better equipped car be more appealing to you? I wouldn't be worried about the mileage or how it has been treated, my car when I bought it had 3000 miles on the clock and used a litre of oil in the first 1500 miles I did. I have been giving it some stick since, i.e. burying the throttle into the carpet and accelerating hard until the speed got a bit too high for comfort and my licence, and the oil consumption seems to be settling down nicely. I have done the new thing and if I could get the price of the ex-demo one down to the price of the new one I'd go for that, you've got nothing to lose in trying, but you have got to live with the decision, brand new or slightly used and better equipped.

I guess as your in kent thats the one at Beedles maidstone? they tried to sell it to me when i ordered mine which was at the end of october wanted 3grand more than it was going to cost me for the new car then. its a nice looking car but i didnt want white. was offered for me to have a go in if i had time to return (it was the sales managers day off) and to be fair i would have given it some welly the same as anyone else who has had that offer.

Its still going to depreciate as its not that old so still going to loose money, i would say it depends on if your prepared to wait for the car. if you want the extra's it has or not? me i went for the new one as the options were not a pull for me and i dont regret it for a second

Go for the new one! There is always somebody who "can't wait" and that is what the Dealer is hoping will walk through his door someday and shift his white vRS. Quite often when cars are on long lead times (as the Octavia appears to be) their stock cars have a lot of dubious extras so they can push the price up for those customers who need an immediate purchase.

Wait, or get the car at a secondhand price.

18 months ago I bought an ex-demo vRS from Prospect Skoda in Bedford. It had less than 6000 miles on it, sat-nav (£1000+ option), 18" wheels and jumbo box (£650 option) and I paid £12k for it, when they were selling new for £15k.

Get it for £2-£3k less than you're paying for the new one, or wait for the new one.
