ASR Light comes on after 10 minutes

Recommended Posts

Hi,

This is my first post here. Hello everyone!

I have a 2006 fabia vrs 1.9 tdi - 34000 miles. Next service is due 25 May 2010.

Last week i noticed the ASR light turning on exactly 10 mins after starting the engine. It doesnt matter if the car moves or not, it still comes on after 10 mins and clears when you turn it off. This happens every time.

I got RAC out to read the codes and it showed up: 18265 load signal error message from ecu.

Theres no ABS light or engine light.

The car is running as normal. ABS works whether the ASR light is on or not, and ASR seems to work until the light comes on (i.e. if i accelerate hard on a slippery surface the light tempoarily flashes and the power cuts as normal). Nothing else to report from it's history.

I really hope someone can help! Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply.

Skoda want £100 just to do a diagnostic so I really dont want to take the car to a dealer at this stage, so was thinking I might invest in a code reader.

Could anyone recommend an error code reader that's reasonably priced, that would get me all the codes now and in the future?

Here's a few I thought might get me the codes:

Could anyone advise on these or others?

Ps i've got a laptop if thats a cheaper way?

maybe ill take to local skoda taxi repair place and ask them................

You need to read the other codes and post them here.

That code means that there are other codes that will indicate why the ECU cannot communicate load information.

Ok I have some error codes - Thanks to Fatty5000 - very much appreciated!

I've read a few other threads about faulty wiring, but i DO get the battery light come up on the dash when i turn the iginition on, which then goes out as normal. The fault codes were cleared, but the ASR light has come on again after 10 mins.

Any help would be really really appreciated.

many thanks moggytech. What would be my next step? Could I take that info to a local mechanic or is it safer to go to Skoda dealer?

One other question: the battery seems fine at the mo. Is this going to damage the car in anyway if I keep driving it until it's service in late may? It could save a few bob if I time the service and diagnostic together.

Thanks for your help.

I would get it looked at ASAP. If it's the sense wire, the battery will most likely go flat when you least expect it. If it's the main load wire, the alternator could be wrecked if it tries to output a voltage into no load.

Thanks for your replies everyone. My plan is to book it into my local VAG specialist asap, give them the error codes and point them in the direction of the alternator and it's wiring.

I'll post my results.

Thanks again everyone.

Had mine back to local garage. Only reading after full diagnosis was a slightly high output from alternator, and some damaged wiring under bulkhead, wiring replaced, fault ligjht still continues emoticon-0101-sadsmile.gif

Amyone also had new discs and pads recently got the problem.................or is it the mouse in the garage eating my bulkhead felt!!

Normally caused by broken wiring at the connector plug down low in front of the gearbox. Easiest to find if viewed from below. Quite a common area for wire breakage. I normally extend the wiring a couple of inches when repairing, skoda seem to have the wires very tight

Problem solved!!!

Bought some ramps for £10 off of ebay. Ramped up at the weekend just to take a look before taking it to the VAG specialist and just as many people have suggested, there was a broken wire coming out of the connector into the alternator!

There was just enough wire poking out of the connector to get a mini junction box on there and reconnect the wire. Only one of them had snapped. Taped her up (within an inch of it's life!) to stop anything breaking again, started her up, left it 10 minutes, and NO asr light!

So a massive thank you to everyone who helped me out on this, especially Fatty5000 who initially scanned it to get the error codes.

Here's the link that I followed to repair it, in case anyone else in a similar position http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=209472.

Back to problem free motoring and the pleasure of cancelling the repair by the VAG specialist on tuesday!

Cheers guys!

Just my 6 pence worth, had the same problem (ASR Light coming on after 10 minutes turning the ASR off). Had my FAB over the pit the last couple of evenings and spent 3 hours looking for the culprit wire after changing the oil, nothing obvious. After a lot of tugging and pulling and prodding the broken wire was actually inside the connector housing, the connector being located to the right of (when viewed from the front) of the bottom of the gearbox (you need the under tray off, and it jacked up to spot). It was the black connector (not the brown one adjacent) with a purple wire and blue wire inside. Only problem is, these connectors are sealed one piece plastic affairs and I can't get inside it to splice in a new bit of wire....... Going to have to take a trip down the scrap yard tomorrow and find a connector with the 2 wires still attached off a VAG car, shouldn't be a problem then hopefully fixed!! If not I'll have tourettes again.

So reckon I'll have saved about £150 if I took it to Skoda for a diagnostics test and had a monkey playing around with it. Hope my little experience saves someone some £.

Had same problem of asr light switching off after 10 minutes and sure enough as wiffola found both wires snapped on plug as shown in the seatcupra thread.

Have repaired wires and will update if it cures other problem as well which is pas takes time to start working on engine start up, with no oil visable maybe this will sort this problem also as have read that battery alternator wireing can be the cause apart from pump and other sensor failure.

Thanks to all keep up good info like this.

just like to say thanks to FAB, i had same fault on 56 Fabia VRS, it indeed was a broken cable as he described. superb infomation there. managed to put a connector in and it now runs a treat.

again, many thanks,

Although it doesn't apply to PD engines, the traction control light will come on if the diesel fuel injection pump timing is wrong, and in particular too far advanced. In this condition the ECU cannot properly control the timing.

but that wouldnt flag a code for alternator load and from the few i have fixed its always been the connector on the gearbox that has either broken 1 or both wires...................................................

I have had the ESP - ABS light problem for a few days. When I investigated, I found that the black connecting plug near the gearbox (the culprit identified on this thread), had a broken blue wire. This was not initially easy to spot, as it had broken right at the plug. I went to my local VAG breaker to get another plug and was told to take one from a recovered Fabia wiring loom. Would you believe that when we looked at it, this plug had the blue wire firmly fixed, but the green/pink second wire was broken about 1 cm from the plug end! Anyhow, enough to crimp a connection. All put back together and a test drive showed.... both bl**dy lights still showing after 10 mins running. At this point I lost patience, went to my local auto-electrician (Stonebridge Auto Electricians) and had them run a diagnosic check. Faulty brake switch, shown in two diagnostic fields. Bo**ocks! New switch £10.15, diagnosis 3x that! I'm wondering what will be next, as they usually come in threes.

And I still havn't fixed the back door leak........

An earlier post asked if a car with this fault was safe to drive. My 06 plate Fabia 1.9TDi has had this exact issue for about a week. I have only drive short distances in it since then but have a 400 mile round trip to do this weekend. I can't get the car seen by anyone (or really look at it myself) until next week. Does anyone have any advice?

I'm not 100% sure, even after reviewing these posts, what this wire actually connects and why it takes 10 minutes to come on.

I just wanted to thank every one in this thread and update....found this info and pointed me in right direction !

I had this same problem (04' VRS) - ASR light coming on after 10mins.........gave the Skoda tech a print out of this thread - he then checked the fault code and went straight to the wiring loom from alternator to ecu and found broken/corroded wires - all fixed in 1hrs labour (negotiated with them £60 for diagnostic + 1hrs labour, all done for £60 inc VAT!!). Light now not coming on so fingers crossed its now sorted !

Thanks !!
